Trivia I'm not sure is right

I think only one pitcher has won his 200th game while in a Mets uniform.

And who would that be?

I know it wasn't Seaver or Koosman.

And it certainly wasn't Spahn.

My guess: Hershiser?

I don't think Al got to 200.

Edit: I was right.

orel hershiser did, if that's who you're thinking of...

Orel in '99, I don't know he's the only one though.

Seaver won it in 1977, after going to Cincinnati. He left with 189 wins and pounded out 14 more with the Red Machine that season.

Hershiser, as far as I know, is the only one. Guys who arrived with number 200 already notched included Spahn, Mickey Lolich, and Tom Glavine.

Koosman won his 200th with the White Sox in 1983, which is cool because he came over to the Phils in 1984 with 202 wins, so we weren't in a position to root against him as he sought his 200th.

On edit: Frank Tanana also joined the Mets with over 200 wins.

Frank Viola came to the Mets with 112 wins, and when he left he had 150.

He ended up with 176.

Similar numbers for Bret Saberhagen: Arrived with 110, left with 139, finished with 167.

Hershiser. I think I was at the game, although maybe not.

Edgy DC
Apr 17 2006 04:18 PM

Which brings us to the test to find out who got the closest without reaching.

Dwight Gooden arrived with zero and left with 157.

I guess Seaver is unbeatable. He left in 1977 with 189 career wins and turned around and left in 1984 with 198 Met wins. A serious tease to the round-number lovers.

Yancy Street Gang
Apr 17 2006 04:21 PM

Yes. I was hoping he'd get two wins in 1987!

Other round-number near misses: George Foster, 99 home runs. Howard Johnson, 997 hits. Jerry Grote, 994 hits.

Ron Darling, 99 wins. Sid Fernandez 98 wins. Al Leiter 95 wins.

I'm pretty sure Pedro did it

Yancy Street Gang
Apr 18 2006 07:05 PM

Gary Cohen just said that only three pitchers reached 200 wins with fewer losses than Pedro's 84. He didn't say who any of them were, though.

Does anybody know?

seawolf17
Apr 18 2006 07:10 PM

One was Dan Carothers, who pitched a looooooooong time ago. I don't remember the other two.

MFS62
Apr 18 2006 07:38 PM

IIRC one is Whitey Ford and the other Lefty Grove.
Nice company to be in.

I do not know the complete answer to this one:

Name all the players to hit for the cycle while wearing a Met uniform, and the exact date (or at least the year).

eric valent, 2004 is the only one i know!

seawolf17
Apr 19 2006 08:27 AM

John Olerud did it (1997?), Kevin McReynolds did it in August 1989. Keith Hernandez did it in the 19-inning game in Atlanta in 1985. I want to say that Alex Ochoa did it too, but that might be wrong.

Johnny Dickshot

Can't forget Mike Phillips in 75 or 76.

Jim Hickman hit for the "natural cycle" in 1963, one of only 13 times that has been accomplished in MLB history.

Jose Valentin also hit for the natural cycle while with the White Sox in 2000. Anyone else think that he will fail to complete the cycle over the course of this season?

ABG

Ochoa did it in 97 or so I believe.

What's surprising here is that the Mets have out-cycled their opponents 8 to 3.

mlbaseballtalk

Regular Reed Richards over there!

Hey maybe you really ARE Reed Richards and just pretending to be The Ever Loving Blue Eyed Thing!

Lets see, milestone Met Homers in Met Unis

Off hand Eddie Murray and Duke Snider hit 400 as Mets
Gary Carter hit 300 as a Met...

Rest...

Piazza hit number 300, too. And I think Mo Vaughn did also.

Right about those, see what I told you about Yancy really being Reed!

Obviously the highest HR career total a Met has ever attained in a Met uni is Mays' # 660th and final HR of his career

Edgy DC
Apr 19 2006 10:07 AM

George Foster hit his 300th at the beginning of the 1985 season. He also drove in his 1000th run in 1983 by beating out an apparent double-play grounder as Mookie Wilson scored the go-ahead run all the way from second.

Sometime in 1982 came Kingman's 300th. Mazzilli hit his 100th as a Met. Straw hit his 100th in 1986 and his 200th in 1989.

If we're going all the way down to 100, let us not forget Jimmy Piersall. And Ed Kranepool.

Here's another for Yancy: What is the shortest nine-plus-inning game in Met history.

Yancy Street Gang
Apr 19 2006 01:36 PM

Don't know. I don't track game durations.

See Yancy's avatar, that guy is another one of them, The Thing

Dr. Doom is theirs (and specifically Reed "Mr. Fantastic" Richards') mortal enemy

Joker to their Batman if you will

Also part of the joke is that Reed is legitimately the smartest man in Marvel's "Universe" and The Thing is, well, not so much

Hence, the creator of UMDB is really more like Reed, not The Thing
