On Juicing the Lineup with Woody (Split from Willie Watch)

If Matsui were available, would it be OK to run him out to second to juice up the lineup?

DUCK, Edgy!!!

Seriously, I want to challenge the notion of "proved he can't hit," or at least explore the meaning of it.

Elster88
Apr 18 2006 10:39 AM

It can't be done. Believe me, I've tried.

Yes.

There we go. There's one nut in the bag.

Does anybody have one of those MLE projections of what Anderson Hernandez could be projected to hit going into this season?

Maybe start up a poll instead of clogging up this thread. Now that you've gotten a Yes, I'm curious.

the 50th percentile of Pecota tabs him at

.302 OBP and .361 slugging.

horribly it had Matsui projected at

.308 obp .372 slg.

god that's grim.

Here's another yes vote, especially if Cliff and Carlos are going to miss more than, say, one more game.

We need more. You know what Arlo said, if two people do it, they'll think you're a couple of faggots and they won't take either of you.

For whatever reason I still believe Matsui has something to offer this team, so peg me as a yes.

Edgy, I think you meant Matsui, not Woody in the thread title.

I think Matsui should be in there most dyas, not just when injuries hamper our lineup-- so put me down as a YES.

No, I mean if Nymr83 can get down with the idea of juicing the lineup with Woody (as he said in a post I didn't split off), that he can actually be described as an improvement --- it opens the door to the idea that maybe extending Matsui's exile as long as possible is not a good strategy but a bitter and self-defeating one.

Clarity is lost when I leave half the thread's thesis behind. Sorry.

If the Mets are interested in getting more offense at 2B, I'd start with Jeff Keppinger before running Matsui out there. But, yes, I think the offensive upgrade from Hernandez' .119/.133/.119 career line to Matsui's career .265/.320/.380 would be more than the downgrade in defense. If Beltran and Floyd are out for any significant amount of time, the lineup will need all of the offensive upgrades it can get.

Matsui and Woodward are both moderate upgrades over what i expect out of Hernandez offensively, though when you factor in defense i still believe Hernandez to have the best chance of being the most useful.
With the sudden n eed for offense i have no problem with either of them (thouhg i prefer Keppinger) getting the starts at 2B (and keeping the job for as long as they are performing even if Beltran and Floyd come back.)

OK, so Matsui hasn't proven he can't hit, but rather has suggested he can perhaps be a useful upgrade, for the time being, over what we have.

Perhaps not. I agree, but we'll never find out if we hate the guy, scapegoat him, and exile him.

Are we all sold on the idea that Keppinger'd be an upgrade even offensively?

I'm not.

I think it's a pretty good bet to think Keppinger in the short term is a better bet to perform with the bat than Hernandez.

i'd rather have Matsui at 2b than Anderson at any point this season.
as for the rest of the injury-reduced lineup:

Reyes
Woodward (cf)
Delgado
Wright
Loduca
Nady
Valentin (lf)
Matsui (2b)

thus using Chavez and Anderson for late-inning defense ONLY.

Woodward played some CF last year, didn't he?

A tale of two middle infielders ............. and pardon the Biblical references. please. Stats are thru end of '05.

Player A .......... Blessed Be Mordecai !!!

189 for 681 (.277) .......... 51 XBH (27%)........ 60 RBI ........ (.303/.395/.698)

Player B ................ Cursed Be Haman !!

193 for 727 (.265) ........... 57 XBH (30%) ....... 68 RBI ........ (.320/.380/.700)

Kaz gets more flak for having produced eerily similar numbers as fan favorite Jose Reyes.

Discuss.

(first one to blame injuries gets a smack)

It's the only way I've ever seen them listed. :)

Wasn't sure. I've seen Avg/SLG/OPS AVG/OBP/SLG, etc.

Apr 18 2006 03:53 PM

Please do. As much crap as I've given Kaz, I'm always willing to give him another chance after he disappears for a while. I still think he can be at least an average defender and a good hitter. Probably not with the Mets, especially with the bipolar Shea fans, but he deserves a real chance, if he can stay healthy. There is no way in hell the Mets can get away with Valentin-Chavez-Hernandez-Pitcher, not even for one game. If that is how it will be, no matter the order, chalk the Mets up for a loss tonight and whatever other games they play, especially if it is Zambrano hitting. We need someone else there; Matsui, Woodward, etc. Hell, move people around, i.e. Lo Duca/Delgado in LF and start Castro/Franco... Something.

Bi-Polar fans should deal. Kowtowing to mooks just empowers them.

Elster88

That's an idea!!! LoDuca to the outfield!!

No way Willie has the brains to think of that.
