No "Deanna" or "Henry Lee?"

Good list, though. Velvets are getting challenged a lot.

I'll put up mine tomorrow.

I agonized over those songs Sharpie, they have so much great stuff, and I wanted to try and get the whole career in there, as best I could anyway.

I thought Rotblatt had the Velvets?

The Velvets are becoming the new Heartbreakers as "gateway" bands to the BLC.

A lot of heroin riding on this one.

When I said "I'll put up mine tomorrow" I was referring (foolishly in this thread) to the fact that I have the next band. Yes, Rotblatt has the Velvets.

I really liked the double album of last year Abbattoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus.

On first read through I though Sharpie was announcing that the next band he was putting up is Yes. Damn line breaks!

sharpie

Not Yes this time but I might next time. "Roundabout" did well for me as a parody song.

Nationalities

Band leader Cave moved from Melbourne to London in 1980. Since forming The Bad Seeds in 1984 he has lived in Berlin, São Paulo, London, and Brighton (UK). The various international members of the band meet to record and tour. Nationalities of the current and ex-members are:

* Australian: Nick Cave, Mick Harvey, Hugo Race, Tracy Pew (deceased), Martyn P Casey, Conway Savage, and Warren Ellis
* British: Barry Adamson and James Johnston
* German: Blixa Bargeld and Roland Wolf
* Swiss: Thomas Wydler
* American: Kid Congo Powers and Jim Sclavunos

I take it these are the first Swiss & German artists in the BLC?

I thought there was a Brazilian in there also.

Willets Point

There's a lot of members in that band, but I only count 14, far short of a brazilian.

Another contest that I can't even vote in. Not familiar enough with either band.

In the quest to be completely fair to bands I've barely even heard of, I have "The Best of NC&BS" on hold at the library. I'll pick it up tomorrow and vote then.

I confess to being Nick Cave incompetant. But in the spirit of this great contest I will try and learn something more about 'em.

CD purchases at Newbury Comics tonight include:
The Best of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds
& The Best of The Velvet Underground (the latter I have on an old cassette so this is an upgrade)

Should be able to vote in this tomorrow.

Willets that's very cool, I really don't care if my team wins, if when you listen to those CD's and become a fan then that's super cool , Nick Cave is not nearly as depressing as he used to be,I think the family has changed him a tad.

I guess this one's over with a very poor turnout: 12-8 Velvets.

seawolf17
Apr 20 2006 09:23 AM

Unfortunately, that's what happens when you bring in a band that nobody knows. I'm hoping to pick up the disc from the library today, so at least I'll give it a listen.

Rockin' Doc
Apr 20 2006 09:37 AM

The less main stream and more obscure the bands involved in a challenge, the fewer the votes registered in the challenge. At least our members aren't casting arbitrary ballots. If we aren't familiar with the bands, we as a group tend refrain from voting in the challenges.

There are a few bands active in the BLC that I have only limited (or no) familiarity with the musical catalog. Unfortunately, 30 second sound bites don't provide a fair exposure to these bands. Personally, I don't have enough desire to learn about these bands to go plop down $15 dollars for a CD in order to gain sufficient exposure to vote.

Willets Point
Apr 20 2006 10:32 AM

As a new owner of a Nick Cave CD I have to say I'm very impressed. Of course I've heard of the band for a long while and heard songs here and there so I didn't just get the CD blindly, but metirish's nomination finally moved me to make the purchase.

How about if we start a thread of bands we like that are not necessarily mainstream but we may want to include in the BLC so folks can have time to bone up? If you don't want to buy new CD's the public library option is a really good one. You'll be surprised what you can find at your local public library.*

I like the idea Willets, glad you made the effort on Cave and it's great to hear that you are impressed, my work here is done...:)
