"Show Me" vs. "Black Friday"
--Pretenders

"Day After Day" vs. "Bodhisattva"
--Two pretty cool guitar-y songs. Tie.

"Mystery Achievement" vs. "Deacon Blues"
--Where’s my sandy beach? Yeah. ‘Deacon’ may have beaten most other songs, but edge to the ‘tenders here.

"My City Was Gone" vs. "Hey Nineteen"
--Pretenders. Still think SD is better served Gaucho-less.

"Middle of the Road" vs. "Kid Charlemagne"
--Pretenders. MotR is one of the least appreciated rock songs ever. Killer drumming and guitar work, furious vocals, topped out by a bitchy blue harmonica solo. It’s why the knobs should go to 11.

"Message of Love" vs. "Doctor Wu"
--Pretenders. More great rhythm section featured.

"Kid" vs. "The Fez"
--More SD disco. .. nother Pretenders win.

"Don’t Get Me Wrong" vs. "Haitian Divorce"
--I’ll grant a tie on this one.

"Brass in Pocket" vs. "My Old School"
--Pretenders. Too sexy.

"Back on the Chain Gang" vs. "Aja"
--Steely Dan, narrowly

Pretenders 8, Steely Dan 2. Might have been closer with better matchups and without an enormous, advocate-borne bias I’m trying to keep in check.

I agree ("brrrr-naow") that "MotR" is awesome rock 'n' roll. I think peeps don't trust it, unsure if Hynde is grudgingly embracing the middle of the road or subtle mocking it.

The middle of the road
Is trying to find me
I’m standing in the middle of life
With my plans behind me
Well I got a smile
For everyone I meet
As long as you don’t try dragging my bay
Or dropping the bomb on my street

Now come on baby!
Get in the road!
Oh come on now!
In the middle of the road, yeah

In the middle of the road
You see the darndest things
Like fakirs driving ’round in jeeps through the city
Wearing big diamond rings and silk suits
Past corrugated tin shacks full up with kids
Oh man I don’t mean a hampstead nursery
When you own a big chunk of the bloody third world
The babies just come with the scenery

Oh come on baby!
Get in the road!
Oh come on now!
In the middle of the road, yeah!

Brrrr-naow!

(Harmonica solo)

One...
Two...
Three...
Four...

The middle of the road
Is no private cul-de-sac
I can’t get from the cab to the curb
Without some little jerk on my back
Don’t harass me, can’t you tell
I’m going home, I’m tired as Hell
I’m not the cat I used to be
I got a kid, I’m thirty-three!

Baby!
Get in the road!
Come on now!
In the middle of the road!
Yeah

Two bands that do not even register a blip on my musical radar screen. I'll respectfully abstain.

My loathing for the dull, meandering, faux-jazzy riffs of Steely Bland is profound.

I would vote 10-0, but it wouldn't be based on the matchups, so I'll abstain.

8-2 Steely Dan

Whenever I hear "My City Was Gone" I think about Rush Limbaugh. He uses the song's opening in his radio show.

JD--What's wrong with the "Gaucho" songs? Personally, I like a lot of Steely Dan's later albums better than their earlier albums.

I guess it's perspective. I was just crazy for Aja when it was out and really looked forward to the next record. I earned 'Gaucho' as a reward for selling new subscriptions on my Daily News paper route (I also got TP&H's 'Hard Promises'* that way, btw, both when they were brand-new. I could have chosen almost any record!) -- but I felt it didn't stand up to its predecessor and in that way, probably looks worse to me than it actually is.

Generally, I think Gaucho sounds as good as all SD records but a lot of the romance and intrigue that Aja had is missing: It's kind of cold. I was also not blown away by Hey 19, and resented it being a bigger hit than anything on Aja. IMO, it sent the wrong message about SD to everyone.

Like Aja it had only had 7 songs, but none as long or involving as 'Aja.'

In the end I find it a decent but not great record -- I like Time out of Mind OK, and Babylon OK and Gaucho OK and Hey 19 alright... can take or leave the rest.

*-I initially felt Hard Promises was not as good as it's predecessor either, but it was redeemed some by including 'Thing About You' which IMO stands up with the best of 'Torpedos.'
