BLC Rematch: Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers vs. Kinks

I uploaded a track for this one. It rocks and it should clarify beyond all doubt that TB&tH are a band among bands and not a bunch of guys who backed a singer/songwriter. Play that whole damn track. Edgy had eleven songs, but Thing About You was listed twice. "Thing About You" vs. "You Really Got Me" KINKS "American Girl" vs. "Tired Of Waiting for You" Good matchup. KINKS "Don't Come Around Here No More" vs. "Dedicated Follower of Fashion" PETTY "Don't Do Me Like That" vs. "Village Green Preservation Society" Hooray for inclusion of Village Green. KINKS "Listen to Her Heart" vs. "Stop Your Sobbing" tie "Restless (with Carl Perkins) " vs. "Lola" KINKS "Here Comes My Girl "vs. "Apeman" KINKS "Refugee" vs. "Low Budget" KINKS "The Waiting" vs. "Superman" PETTY "Even the Losers" vs. "Celluloid Heroes" KINKS KINKS 7.5 PETTY 2.5 Kinks are one of the best bands of all time with a host of other great songs (where is "Sunny Afternoon" or "Waterloo Sunset" or "20th Century Man" or "Come Dancing" or "Ducks On the Wall" or, well I can go on). We heard ‘DFOF’ come on the ipod the other day and made us smile. "Don't Do Me Like That" vs. "Village Green Preservation Society" --Petty. "Listen to Her Heart" vs. "Stop Your Sobbing" --If the BLC makes me do thing more that waste time for the rest of my life, it’s taught me “Listen to her Heart” is a hell of a song. Petty. "Restless (with Carl Perkins) " vs. "Lola" --I like the effort you put into it, and the variety, but going with the Kinks here. "Here Comes My Girl "vs. "Apeman" --Kinks "Refugee" vs. "Low Budget" --Two filthy hard songs here. Petty "The Waiting" vs. "Superman" --I prefer “Catch Me Now” to both of the other ‘Low Budget’ entries on this list, and not sure removing ‘All Day and All of the Night’ was a good idea the way this contest is breaking. I’ll give this a tie. "Even the Losers" vs. "Celluloid Heroes" --Kinks narrowly. Not sure if either band really improved their lineup in this second round, but changes to the Kinks’ 10 were more costly in a contest I scored 5-5 the first time around. This time, in another 10 difficult choices, it’s Petty 5.5, Kinks 4.5

Historically, "You Really Got Me" is the far more important song. It was a brand-new sound which they kind of re-did for "All Day and All of the Night." Not to take anything away from "All Day..." It is a teriffic song too but if you have to have only one it should be "You Really Got Me." Those are only two of the huge number of terrific Kinks songs out there, most of which seem to be disparaged in favor of a Byrds knockoff band. I don't get it.

I don't really think sponsors should vote (I didn't last time), but if it's allowed: "Thing About You" vs. "You Really Got Me" -- Kinks "American Girl" vs. "Tired Of Waiting for You" -- tie "Don't Come Around Here No More" vs. "Dedicated Follower of Fashion" -- Kinks "Don't Do Me Like That" vs. "Village Green Preservation Society" -- Kinks "Listen to Her Heart" vs. "Stop Your Sobbing" -- Kinks "Restless (with Carl Perkins) " vs. "Lola" -- Kinks "Here Comes My Girl "vs. "Apeman" -- Kinks "Refugee" vs. "Low Budget" -- Kinks "The Waiting" vs. "Superman" -- Kinks "Even the Losers" vs. "Celluloid Heroes" Kinks Kinks, 9.5 - 0.5. While I wouldn't call Petty "watered down Byrds," it is a pretty mediocre band overall, and the Kinks beat Petty on lyrics alone.
