"Driver's side" and "passenger side" are better descriptive terms here --

2002 Chevy Trailbrazer -- Driver's side
1996 Plymouth Neon -- Passenger's side
1975 Monte Carlo -- behind the license plate (?)

1974 LTD Sedan -- don;t remember
1975 Honda Civic -- don't remember
1983 Datsun/Nissan Sentra -- don't remember
1986 Subaru GL -- don't remember

Since then I've rented dozens of cars and haven't guessed right on a single one of them

1986 Chevrolet Spectrum hatchback - driver's side

I recently notice on my wife's car that there's a an arrow pointing to the gas tank side on the dashboard. Make this more visible and its a great idea for rental cars.

It never occured to me until reading this that these things varied.
I always just assumed that I keep forgetting which side it was supposed to be on.

My current car - Toyota - is on the driver's side.
I can't remember previously owned cars.

Don't know the past, but our current cars -- a '99 Toyota and an '04 Honda -- both have it on the driver's side.

Aside from rental cars, since 1990 I've only driven Japanese cars (Hondas, Nissans, and Toyotas) and they've all been on the driver's side.

I remember my parents had a 1974 Chevy Malibu where you had to lift the rear license plate to get to the gas tank.

Our cars are

Jeep Wrangler -passenger
Dodge Neon - passenger
Suzuki Verona- driver
Hyundai Elantra- driver

American cars on the right.

Japanese cars on the left.

German cars on the hood.

Elster, that is a very good thing to remember!

When I drove to Scarlet's house a couple weeks ago I had a loaner car because my son's car was in the garage and he was driving mine, etc, etc, and anyway it was a Buick Century. When I stopped for gas at Allentown it would have been a good little rule to know! (it was on the passenger side, of course)

I don't know if it's a hard and fast rule, but it seems to be generally true.

Though not German cars on the hood obviously. I drove a Jetta a few times but can't remember. I think my dad's Porsche has it on the left.

My dad had a 1976 LTD, white with a red Landau roof. I used to call it the living room on wheels - and it was a two door. Why? Why did a car this enormous have to be a two-door? The doors were so huge, they could almost span the width of the next parking spot in any parking lot...

Driven regularly:

1968 GM (I think) Truck
1969 Chevy Nova
1975 Subaru
1979 Renault Le Car
1980 Station Wagon (don't recall the make)
1982 Chevy Chevette
1985 Buick Le Sabre
1993 Saturn SL1
1999 Saturn SL2

Of those I recall, the gas cap was on the driver's side.
