They were stranded for 11 hours!

I can't imagine what it must have been like to be stuck up there for so long.

And I can't understand why they couldn't get the backup generator running. WTF?

The tram was built as a temporary solution until the F-train could stop on roosevelt island, the F now stops there and the tram is a disaster waiting to happen. It should probably be closed, at the very least the city should pledge not to spend more than the normal upkeep on it (ie we are not wasting money on upgrading this thing when it isnt even needed.)

As the parent of an eight-week-old baby, OH MY GOD I would lose my frickin' mind being stuck for eleven hours with no formula and not enough diapers.

I saw a few kids(11/12) interviewed on the news and they thought it was cool, by all accounts everyone did all they could to keep people calm, one kid tought his TV exposure would help him with the girls, now that's the thing to do.

My daughters think the tram is cool--we try to ride it, just for fun, every year, and it's a little bit nervewracking to be suspended over the East River for ten minutes. I think we'd go completely nuts if we were stuck on that thing for 11 hours.

What a nightmare that must have been for the parents of those young kids. I've had some bad airport experiences while traveling with young kids, but never anything as bad as that must have been.

Wow I didn't even think of that. Even if there we no babies how were people relieving themselves?

One car came to a stop by first avenue just above the Food Emporium store with 2 babies inside. The store sent diapers, formula, baby wipes, snacks, water etc up via a basket lowered from a rope.

If I was up there I'd probably ask for an adult diaper or two for myself, just in case.

"Even if there we no babies how were people relieving themselves?"

Just open the door and let it fly baby!

Meanwhile in the "Thread titles that would make great band names" BLC, The Roosevelt Island Tram Incident has an early lead over One Red Paperclip.

Last night Lenny Harris and his friend were watching Spider-Man which now seems strangely relevant.

I would swim across the East River before I ever rode that tram.

The tram is fun. I've been on it many times to visit my cousins on RI. However, it has a history of breaking down. When I first read this story my thought was "Is the tram breaking down even newsworthy anymore?"

They should put an elevator/staircase on the 59th St bridge so people can walk from Manhattan to Roosevelt Island if they want.
