Gerrit Cole cheated? Tsk Tsk

From the LA Times via Yahoo:

https://sports.yahoo.com/yankees-gerrit-cole-named-ball-150540946.html

“Hey Bubba, it's Gerrit Cole, I was wondering if you could help me out with this sticky situation,” the pitcher wrote, adding a wink emoji. “We don't see you until May, but we have some road games in April that are in cold weather places. The stuff I had last year seizes up when it gets cold.”

Re: MF the MFYs 2021 Thread

Wow indeed.

There was talk about the two sides being far apart early on so six years for a guy you'll turn 33 mid-season will be seen as the Yanx blinking most likely, particularly since he's already

begun transitioning from middle IF to corner IF. Also maybe a case of buying high, his 2020 OPS was a full 100 points higher than any other single season and only two of his previous

years were within 200 points of that mark which is saying a lot when all those other (six full) seasons were played at Coors Field.

I dunno. The Cashman Era is now ridiculously long. The only guys I can think of off the top of my head are like Clippard and Melky Cabera.

But like the guys they gave up for Stanton or Michael Pineda... The whole Chapman thing (4 prospects who went nowhere to Cincy, then to the Cubs for Gleyber Torres, then resigning) It was like coming and going with that wife-beating steroid cheat

Masahiro Tanaka's stint with the Yanx is over as he heads back to Japan to become a Rakuten Eagle

I think Rakuten makes cheap insta-noodle dishes but I'm not sure. I don't think they make eagles.

More interesting to note is that, behind Gerrit Cole, the Yanx appear to be relying on three reclamation projects who haven't pitched much lately.

The 2-3-4 in their rotation could be the recently acquired Corey Kluber and Jameson Taillon, plus holdover/TJ-rehabbing Luis Severino. All three

were good and promising at one point, but they also combined for just 17 ML starts / 85 IP in 2019 [Kluber = 7 /36; Taillon = 7 / 37; Severino = 3 /12]

and just one start / one IP (Kluber) in 2020

The most recent ML appearances for each was: Kluber on 7/26/20; Severino on 9/28/19; Taillon on 5/1/19

Johnny Damon, having already loudly supported Donald Trump and whined about coronavirus restrictions, completed the retired baseball player Triple Crown on Friday with a DUI in Florida.

Damon was arrested just after 1 a.m., when he was charged with a DUI. According to police, his wife, Michelle Mangan-Damon, shoved a cop and was charged with resisting arrest.

It was a Fugly game by the home squad: lots of BBs issued, Boone started an 'Opener' seemingly for no reason other than to show that he could, errors, two-out hits allowed. Plus they were getting one-hit for much of the game by Michael Wacha.

Question #1: Where did all the baseballs come from?

I mean, did a whole group pre-decide to bring in their own, and by own I mean BP souvenirs they previously grabbed from six year-olds, just in case the game sucked, and somehow got them all through security?

Yanx lose to TBR again today dropping them to 5-9

Of course it's wise not to make too much of this so early, it's an ugly winning percentage ("on pace for" 58 wins) but still just 4 games under .500, a gap which can disappear within a week.

And the Yanx have actually gone 5-8 thru their first 13 games three times now in the last six seasons and wound up winning 84 & 103 games the previous two times (2016 & '19).

But this time feels different somehow, the record's bad AND they look bad in the process.

Re: MF the MFYs 2021 Thread

The Yankees have been able to coast into the playoffs the past few seasons based on their lineup of mashers hitting a bandbox of a ballpark, only to lose to better teams in the postseason (either a 16-1 clobbering or Aroldis Chapman surrendering a walk-off homer while wearing a weird smirk on his face). This season they have to contend with the still good defending AL Champions, a vastly improved Blue Jays, and a moderately improved Red Sox in their own division. I predict they'll finish 3rd or 4th with a record close to .500.

Well, it's hard to say they coasted into post-season with 100 &103 win totals in the last two full seasons (on pace for 89 last year) but, yeah, this year has an early whiff of struggling to stay atop mount .500

So it seems that, in addition to several other issues the Yanx have this year, that they're also probably the worst base running team in either league.

-- Hitting into DPs: 2nd Most

-- Outs made on bases: Most

-- SB: T-Lowest

Was perusing the standings this AM, noticed an L1 in the streak column for the MFYs, was confused since I knew they had a large lead before resuming action in the Colbert time slot last night. Maybe their game got suspended or…THEY LOST? SEVEN IN THE NINTH? OH BEAUTIFUL! There was a conga line scene outside Fenway in “Fever Pitch” for such a dramatic turn of events.

Though I had no rooting interest then, it brought me back to a long ago January Sunday when I got out of the car with an AFC playoff game hopelessly one-sided at the half; engaged in a family function sans TV; got back in the car with the afternoon's next playoff game underway; and heard the announcer refer to the Bills having defeated the Oilers and assumed he misspoke. No way the Oilers blew a 28-3 halftime lead.

But, of course, they did (from up 35-3 to having lost 41-38).

BTW, I did not expect to have so much fun just now typing “Oilers,” a much-missed football nickname. Just one more happy byproduct of an epic MFY loss.

This, to me, is still the reason that baseball is the greatest game. Because the Bills could have run out of time, but the Angels *couldn't.* Chapman had to get those last outs.

And I know it's not comparable, but even so, the Braves still had to get those three outs in the top of the ninth. Were we going to score eighteen runs to tie the game? No, probably not. But we *could* have. (Theoretically.)

Mike Pagliarulo, who needed to go to Minnesota to know postseason, on the legendary welcome he received in the Bronx.

I was at the ceremony where you were inducted into the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame, congrats on that! You told a great story about your best day in the Majors. Could you repeat that for our readers?

Bill Madden had asked that question in the clubhouse when I came back for Old Timers Day after I was done playing. I told him it was in 1984 and I had just gotten called up. I went to the ballpark on a Sunday morning and I couldn't find a parking space. It was 9:30 in the morning with nowhere to park. Turns out it was Old Timers Day and I didn't realize it. So, I walk down the tunnel and open the doors and I see all of these great old timers in Yankees uniforms. The greatest players to ever wear a Yankees uniform who were still alive were in this locker room. There's not enough words to describe what I saw. They were all laughing and having a great time.

My locker was down in the back right corner, so I walk over there and Joe DiMaggio was sitting in my seat! I walked up behind him and was actually afraid to go to my locker. I introduced myself and he said, “Hey Pags, how are you doing?” I said to myself, “Oh my God, Joe DiMaggio knows my name?” He told me he liked the way I played and to keep up the hard work. I just couldn't believe that I was talking to Joe DiMaggio and he was in my locker. Finally I said, “Do you mind if I get my shoes out of here?” He said, “Help yourself kid, it's your locker.” I always felt bad for him though because he was never alone. He always had a crowd around him.

I'm imagining just how crazy that was to have guys dating back to the 1930s there in that room. How incredible.

It was something else. So then, I was getting some stuff out of my locker and all of a sudden the doors opened and it got real quiet. It was like Jesus had stepped into the locker room. Mickey Mantle and Billy Martin walked in. Mickey commands that much respect. He pointed in my direction and it was so quiet, I heard him say to Billy, “Hey, is that the kid over there?” I turn to Donnie [Mattingly] and said, “Hey, I think he's pointing at you.” Donnie said, “He ain't pointing at me, he's pointing at you!” Joe DiMaggio said, “What did you do, kid?”

Now he starts walking at me. All these great players are all staring at me and the room is dead quiet. Mickey and Billy are walking towards me and I'm sweating. I must have been white as a ghost. I'm thinking, “Did I break a rule or do something wrong in the clubhouse?” Here comes Mickey Mantle and he's got this shit-eatin' grin on his face. He grabs me by the back of the neck and pulls me across the locker room and into the training room. Billy was right with him. Everyone was watching this. Then he starts punching me in the training room like I'm a punching bag. I don't dare hit him back, so I'm just trying to block the punches.

Then he just gives me a slap and says, “Hey kid, I love the way you play. Here's my number; you need anything, you call. Welcome to the family.” Then Billy Martin just says, “Hi, I'm Billy Martin.” Like I don't know. I think I said my name back, who knows. They both left and I had the biggest smile on my face. The thing of it is that when I walked out of the training room, all of the old timers started talking to me. It was like I had Mickey's approval. They must have been great fighters back then, because Hank Bauer came up and started hitting me too. Then later I became Hank Bauer and Moose Skowron's driver. I would take them to the field on Old Timers Day every year. Now, I don't remember if we won or lost or how I did that day, but that was easily my best day in the Major Leagues.
