Lucchesi makes Matz redundant, which make you wonder why he was tendered a contract in the first place. I suppose it's possible that they see one of them as being long relief/extra left arm, but they have a full pen of righties under contract and don't have a first lefty yet.

They can still release Matz by some point in spring training and they won't be responsible for his salary, I think.

Because at that point, they didn't know they were going to get Lucchesi or Carasco. If the deals had fallen through, you need a backup plan.
