Hands-Free Options

Now that the prime lefty relief merchandise is off the shelf, what else do we have available for purchase that will help us with nagging late-inning lefty-removal?

-- Solid, good old reliable mid-shelf lefty brand, like, say, Justin Wilson: round peg for round hole; familiar, if uncreative, problem-solving

-- Surprisingly effective off-label-use righty, a la Trevor Rosenthal, with a surprising platoon tilt : interesting, if potentially-more-expensive option (potential bonus: extra Trevor)

-- Discount rack/"woke" brand (and cheap bounce-back candidate?) Sean Doolittle: likely cheap, veddddddddy interesting, possibly done

-- Something else you're considering putting in the cart?

I got no gripe with Wilson. Doolittle is too much of a lottery ticket at this point.

Buuuuuut if he came with a lottery ticket price (say, minor-league with 7-figure performance bonus)?

Re: Hands-Free Options

It's interesting in that the team has a history of solving lefty relief shortfalls by not going big.

Wilson was grabbed as a free agent in late January. Blevins was acquired for a spare part at the very end of spring training. Josh Edgy was a 30th-round draft choice. I'm pretty sure Scott Rice was somebody Sandy met at a flea market. Even Feliciano kept bouncing back to them after being cut loose.

I wouldn't say it's smarter to let the game come to you, but it's certainly worked for them. Lefty relievers are weirdos and while every team wants one, they usually don't want too many, and so the market for them never quite closes.

Can you think of the last time the Mets brought in a lefty relief specialist (non-closer) for two or more years?

It seems like a priority right now — it's the closest thing to what I'd call a "hole" — but I'm not sure what Sandy's priority is. I've read that Justin Wilson was aiming to retire and read elsewhere that the team still interested in him. If I had to guess, I imagine they offer him a year plus an option. They may have to shed one or two other guyz along the way.

Trevor Rosenthal needs a custom jersey with an opening between the numbers -- so that the giant fork sticking out of his back doesn't tear the fabric.

Did well enough last year-- fork notwithstanding-- to be traded FOR by the contending Padres during the stretch run. Throwing hard and with snap and all!

Given all this Bauer noise today, part of me feels like we need a little more good-karma Doolittle to balance any Twitteration from Trevor. Part of me also REALLY wants to see what happens when Bauer and Doolittle-- and Stroman and Smith and possibly Blevins-- share a locker room. I'm such a messy bitch!

Coming soon to Netflix... PERFECT STRANGLERS! Starring Brandon Nimmo as the goofy, good-hearted scamp who tries desperately to keep his roommates Sean Gilmartin and Sean Doolittle from murdering one another.

Re: Hands-Free Options

Loup's best years were his first three, when he was pitching to contact and not trying to pump up his K rate. Then it looks like somebody gave him bad advice. The Rays seemed to get him back towards his earlier approach, although his .219 BABIP last season was not sustainable. Still, he's at least serviceable, and could be above average for that role. Looks like a pretty good pick-up.

Re: Hands-Free Options

I still like Rosenthal as an option. So does MLB.com's Mike Petriello, who argues convincingly that Rosenthal's bounce back is no mirage.

[BLOCKQUOTE]In Rosenthal's case, we'd say the 2020 performance means a lot. We'd seen him be great in the past. The velocity remains excellent. The ability to throw strikes looks much improved. There's a history of pitchers needing a minute coming off of Tommy John surgery.
[/BLOCKQUOTE]

Super-bullpen(Rosenthal inclusive)-plus-JBJ-plus-rotation-lotto-tix may be a better use of the $32M between this team and the luxury tax than certain Twitter shit-stirrers.

Re: Hands-Free Options

I don't know what to make of Rosenthal

- he was good, though a bit short of great (WHIP = 1.25) during his first three full seasons (2013-15)

- then his WHIP ballooned to 1.91 in 2016 as his H/9 and BB/9 skyrocketed

- he seemed to be back to his old self in 2017 before missing all of 2018 to TJ surgery

- he was beyond awful coming back, 26 BB in 15 IP ... bad with Detroit, worse in Washington

- and then, as mentioned, bounced back in the partial 2020 campaign: 1.90 ERA and a 0.845 WHIP, essentially the

best year of his career although encompassing just 24 IP split between KCR & SDP

And he still won't turn 31 until the end of May

Re: Hands-Free Options

Relief can be that way. You do well, you get overused, you do poorly, your work thins out ... wash, rinse, repeat.

Except in the small sample sizes of relievers' seasons, those effects get amplified.

Loup gets "around $3M" to play for the Mets this year, per Martino.

On the subject of Rosenthal, Fangraphs predicts 2 years/$16M for him. I can't decide if I think that's a good deal or what.
