Re: Ex-Mets in Lesser Threads

2011 Carlos Beltran has had it with 2011 Justin Turner.

In 2011, Turner's first season with the Mets, Beltrán pulled him aside and told him it looked like he didn't care.

“You're a young guy,” Beltrán said. “You can't just be flipping balls from second base. Get the ball and throw it, show a little bit more effort.”

2013 David Wright had only an inkling of what 2013 Justin Turner might become.

At that moment, Wright did not anticipate Turner developing the player he became with the Dodgers. But he detected in that conversation an edge in Turner he had not heard previously.

“You could tell in his voice he was upset and hurt that (the Mets) didn't view him as good enough to be on our team,” Wright says. “He used that as motivation. You could tell that day moving forward that he was going to prove us wrong, that he was going to show baseball we made a mistake.”

2021 Justin Turner is considered the world champion Dodgers' leader because 2011 David Wright told him to stop being such a little bitch with the press after a bad game.

After the game, Turner drifted from the training room to the weight room to the food room, seeking to avoid reporters. He had settled in a sauna when Wright found him and asked what he was doing.

“I don't want to go talk to those guys,” Turner said. “I'm going to get buried.”

“Look, you've helped us win way more games than you've lost us,” Wright replied. “The best thing to do in these situations is go out there and tell these guys exactly what happened. If you don't tell them what happened, they're going to write whatever the heck they want and assume whatever they want.”

With that, Wright escorted Turner into the clubhouse and stood by his side as he answered questions. Turner recalls experiencing great relief when the interview session was over, and to this day he tells Dodgers teammates the story, using it as a lesson in accountability and responsibility.

Wright's guidance in that moment is something Turner says he will never forget. And as he became more established with the Dodgers, he also emerged as a model teammate, particularly with the way he regularly demonstrated concern for others.

Ken Rosenthal with the rest of the story.

Jay Bruce is the type of guy why shifts are employed vs Left handed hitters...the guy is a dead pull hitter that is swinging for the fences...if he makes contact that doesn't go into the stands, it will likely be hit between 1st and 2nd on the ground or between the RFer and CFer if they had played straight-away outfield positions...

Re: Ex-Mets in Lesser Threads

Though “he was good in Korea” comes off as the baseball equivalent of “my girlfriend in Canada,” Seattle Mariner Chris Flexen is making the most of it.

When baseball came to a halt last spring, the Mariners were still in Arizona. Many of their professional scouts were on the road, watching high school and college players. Soon enough, though, everyone was back home. There were zero games to watch, to scout and to write reports on. At least not stateside.

“We found ourselves with a scouting staff that didn't have a lot to do. Our guys were dying to work. They were desperate to do something … to feel like they were making an impact,” said Mariners assistant general manager Justin Hollander. “So rather than sit around, we had video of KBO (Korea Baseball Organization) and the NPB (Nippon Professional Baseball) games that had already started.”

What were the Mariners looking for, exactly? Well, that was sort of the beauty of going through this exercise: They didn't know, which was completely fine. The performances (and data) would shape their interest. When you're looking under rocks, you have to sift through a lot of basalt in hopes of finding a ruby.

“We asked our pro scouting staff to go through all the video and look for U.S.-born players who had gone over there and foreign-born players who may have come over for the first time, just to get a sense of who were the guys we wanted to track and also monitor all season,” Hollander said.

Flexen certainly fit that mold. He had an 8.07 ERA in parts of three seasons with the Mets (2017-2019) and had gone to Korea with the hopes, really, of rebuilding his resume in case the big leagues came calling again.

Pitching for Doosan, Flexen didn't just find his big breaking ball — a pitch that got a lot of positive reviews and awkward swings — in Korea, but he also found himself as a pitcher. Across the board, his stuff jumped. Flexen posted a 132-to-32 strikeout-to-walk ratio, saw a bump in his velocity and had a 28 percent strikeout rate, which caught the eyes of the Mariners.

And because of the pandemic, the Mariners could allocate more of their scouting resources than in a typical year to evaluate players like Flexen. That led to more eyeballs and opinions and, the Mariners believe, better decision-making.

“This was born out of opportunity. Before (the pandemic), we may have had two or three looks, mostly analytical. But we would not have had the breadth of different evaluators take a look at him like we did,” Hollander said.

“Between those early-season reports, midseason reports and end-of-season reports, I want to say we had six reports on Chris from last year from different evaluators. Then, at the end of the season, we were able to run our analytical work on the NPB and the KBO, and Chris popped in both of those lenses.”

I looked at the roster for Settle's AAA team, the Takoma Rainiers, where Ty Kelly is playing. I see that Logan Verrett is there and that Eric Young, Jr. is a Coach. Anyone else we know from the Mets? (And is Justin Grimm a relative of Benjamin?)

Brooks Pounders on the DL for Tacoma too, and Jack Reinheimer in the infield.

ex-met todd frazier is now on the best baseball team in sussex county, nj, as he's recently joined the sussex county miners to keep his body warm and ready for olympic glory.

he seems like such a down-to-earth guy. out there, having fun. talking with all the minor leaguers, the umps. made time for the fans before the game, signing baseballs and baseball cards. having failed to adequately plan for the occasion, i had to run out to the gift shop, buy a ball, and run to my car to get a marker, too, but i managed to get a nice signed miners ball, and the marathon family got a picture with him too.

luckily, i'm too dumb to think of anything to say. so i just smiled bigly and dumly as we stood there in the aura of a major leaguer.

it was a doubleheader. he went 0-3, clearly swinging too hard in what i can imagine is a terrible no-win situation, but had a nice play at third. he finally picked up his first hit over the weekend, a double.

the miners, by the way, just moved to the frontier league, which is now officially a partner league of mlb. so, big-time-adjacent!

I used to read his stuff back in the day, when he moved from a beat writer covering the Red Sox to a national audience. And then I realized the he knew, in this order:

1) The Red Sox

2) The American League

3) The National League

4) The New York Mets.

Nothing he wrote about the Mets seemed true to me. His "insights" were general knowledge if you read the NY papers, but must have sounded original to his national audience. None of his predictions about deals they were going to make came true. So I began to question how well he knew anything else.

This article was about an ex-Met, so I considered it through that prism.

Just because one is entitled to an opinion doesn't mean that the opinion is well thought-out, defensible or informed; nor does it follow that dropping one whenever you feel like is going to be received as appropriate or relevant for the discussion at hand. How many threads take a stupid wrong turn precisely because of this?

You see a link to an article about Brent Strom that I'm certain you didn't read with the words "Peter Gammons" in it -- and suddenly feel as though this the right time and place to take some cheap shot at Peter Gammons, then defend it by saying you're entitled to your opinion?

Re: Ex-Mets in Lesser Threads

A taste of Gammons's story.

Tampa Bay pitching coach Kyle Snyder met Strom after Snyder was the Royals' first pick in the 1999 draft and Strom was their pitching coach. When Snyder considered a post-playing career in professional baseball, he traveled to attend clinics and lectures by Strom and Ron Wolforth of the Texas Baseball Ranch.

“Brent Strom is the best pitching coach, bar none,” says Snyder, whose name is often thrown into that discussion, as well. “He paved the way for today's young pitching coaches. He embraced ideas, analytics, with a changing mind, a constantly inquiring mind, understanding how quickly the game is always changing. Tom House was an important pitching savant who changed the business. Brent is the modern savant.

“He has such great respect for the game, and he has unending respect for the pitchers with whom he works. He focuses on the person, not the treatment. He is always honest. He understands all levels of strength and conditioning, and how it applies to each individual. In some ways, he's a chameleon in his own way, because the evolution of the game and the individual nature of all pitchers requires that. He also respects everyone with whom he works.”

Strom was brought to Houston by Luhnow and worked with A.J. Hinch as manager; the manager and his pitching coach developed a strong relationship. Hinch left after the 2019 season and was replaced by Dusty Baker, who is a few months younger than Strom. “In terms of credibility and trust, no one brings more than Dusty Baker and Brent Strom,” says James Click, who replaced Luhnow as GM after arriving from Tampa Bay. “Given the circumstances in which Dusty came here, it has worked out really well. They're two very respectful people.”

I remember Strom coming up in the Mets minor league system.

He went 13-5 in the minors in 1971 and I had hopes he could make it in the majors, even though it was reported he didn't throw very hard.

With hard throwers Seaver, Matlack, Koosman and Gentry, I thought a pitcher like Strom could be very effective in the rotation.

I was pissed when they traded him for Phil Hennigan.

I one time pitched a book idea-- really just a pitch of a pitch -- that would tell a parallel history of the Mets and the Angels, which each born in the same era and occupying a similar role and character in their cities inasmuch as being in the shadow of a more successful/history-laden franchise, very few high moments of glory, similar ballparks, some of the same problems (ownership), and a few key intersections with one another (Ryan-Fregosi) and a lot of shared players, especially lately.

I think I could still make that case, and if so, could probably build similar dual-histories. One notion behind the project for publishers was the idea that it addressed the governors that single-team focused sports books had on audiences. This would sell in two markets, not one! Rejected.

The AngelMets:
•
Ryan

  •
K-Rod

  •
Both had Whitey at a crucial juncture, but neither had peak-Whitey.

  •
1986 was a huge season for both, but the post-season turned out dramatically differently

  •
Had their secondary-team status underscored by the primary team's outstanding but annoying celebrity manager (Billy Martin/Tommy Lasorda)

  •
Played in a beguiling-but-dated mid-century modern ballpark from the mid-sixties
  •
The Angels were probably the most definitive built-through-free-agency team through much of their mid period, while the Mets were among the most home-grown (and trade-built), which makes for an interesting study in contrasting philosophies. The Mets go from bad to great to bad to good, while the Angels stay pretty good but miss out on the greatness.

Plus, they've got Reggie Jackson trying to kill the Queen and we've got Bernard Gilkey getting bopped in the head by a fly ball. So there's that.

I would absolutely read a Mets/Angels book. I wonder if the better hook is "secondary-team status," and you loop the White Sox and A's in there.

Braves third base traffic cop Ron Washington's Mets coaching roots noted in the Times:

He became a coach in the Mets' system upon retiring in 1990. The team was hoping to move Tim Bogar, their eighth-round pick from 1987, from shortstop to second base. Washington raised his hand and said he could help.

“Bogar was my first pupil,” he said.

    d'Ispatch from d'Atlanta…

If hitting a home run in the World Series is the stuff kids dream of growing up, then Travis d'Arnaud's Friday was doubly good. Not only did he wallop his second home run of this Series at a key moment in the eighth inning of Game 3, but his day had started with a family trip for doughnuts.

“We got 15 doughnuts,” d'Arnaud said after his 437-foot homer produced the final run to ice Atlanta's 2-0 win. “We got a bunch of chocolate bars, chocolate twists, cinnamon twists, cinnamon rolls, apple fritter, a lot of doughnut holes.

    “Yeah, it was good, too.”

At 32 and playing in his second World Series, d'Arnaud is in the sweet spot of his career, playing with a team he loves. Now with his fourth organization in nine years, he signed a two-year, $16 million extension in August that likely will keep him in Atlanta through 2024. He's caught three shutouts this postseason — two against Milwaukee in a division series and Friday's game that looked like it could be a no-hitter until pinch-hitter Aledmys Diaz dumped a base hit onto the outfield grass to start the eighth.

Offensively, he is hitting .417 (5 for 12) in this World Series. An unexpected key has been using teammate Joc Pederson's bat. After hitting .167 against the Brewers in the division series and .211 against the Dodgers in the National League Championship Series, he started using Pederson's bat in the World Series and things turned around.

Tsuyoshi Shinjo is the new manager/Big Boss of the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters.

Tsuyoshi Shinjo has always been a performer. And the former outfielder lived up to that reputation on Thursday, November 4 when he was introduced as the new manager of the Pacific League's Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters.

Wearing a maroon suit, sunglasses and an unbuttoned white shirt with an outrageously high white collar, Shinjo made it clear from the outset that he intends to inject some new life not only into the Fighters but also into Japanese baseball as a whole.

“Don't call me manager, I want to be known as ‘Big Boss,'” Shinjo told a packed press conference in Sapporo, explaining that is what he was called on the Indonesian island of Bali where he spent the last several years.

The surprises didn't stop there. After making an entrance that was more reminiscent of John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, Shinjo laid out his plans for the struggling club.

“I won't aim for a championship from the outset,” Shinjo said. “If the expectations are too high, the players will be overwhelmed. We'll practice day by day at first and build on our experience. Then around September if all goes well, we can say we are going for the championship.”

Before Thursday's press conference, Shinjo visited the Fighters new stadium that will open in 2023 and said it's a venue that will “surprise the world.”

When David Ruffin comes out of the grave to declare Shinjo's suit to be a bit over the top for him, you have to question the choice.

Joe Torre, meanwhile, enjoys having his fashion choices from the '70s suddenly looking sedate by comparison.
