Tyson's looking like: 'Who the fuck is this guy?'

Tyson is one of those guys who's a media celebrity to the point where past transgressions are forgotten and/or ignored by many in the public and certainly by much of the infotainment business.

John Gotti was like this back in the day. I mean, sure, his various criminal enterprises were a hidden tax built into many aspects of everyday life and every once in a while he'd have people who

interfered with his plans murdered ... but those minor details weren't enough to stop some from seeing him as a folk hero, plus he was rich and dressed well so TV anchors were known to dampen

their chairs while gushing about how the 'Dapper Don' was seen at the latest trendy restaurant the previous evening.

Media image is why Pepsico (when I think of pancakes, I think Pepsi) has rebranded the Aunt Jemima pancake mix and syrup products to:

Pearl Milling Company.

WTF???

That will really stick in my mind when I go to the store.

Poor media decision.

Pete has been in Tampa this winter and was at the SB which accounts for the clothing. He's been less of a presence on the socials this off-season so posting about shaking hands with anyone was a bad decision.

FWIW, I found it a bit hypocritical that the cast of The Hangover took a morals stand against having Mel Gibson in the sequel, yet from all accounts didn't make any public objections to Tyson's cameo in the first one.

Granted they probably would have more creative control clout the second time around, but it does suggest what you say about Tyson's “rehabilitation,” despite lack of contrition/remorse. While Gibson's fall from grace had recently occurred.

They were well within their rights to refuse to work with Gibson, but it is interesting that no public objections were made when it came to Tyson.

Tyson might want to think twice about being photographed with a guy who strikes out so much. Not good for the champ's image.

Tyson's so ubiquitous that I forgot all about his past rape rap. I even forgot the details* -- whether I once thought he was truly guilty or railroaded. I do remember the ear-biting incident against Evander Holyfield, though -- very well.

Plus, I'm a fan of the Mike Tyson Mysteries cartoon. And it took me a few hours, having to return to the OP, to realize that was even Pete Alonso. So this opening post hardly resonates with me.

Also, the Aunt Jemima rebrand isn't a social media decision.

The Aunt Jemima brand/ logo was excoriated in the media, They were shamed into changing.

I'm saying what they changed it to was the result of a poor decision by some marketing person, group or panel.

They changed it to demonstrate social consciousness, but I feel they struck out. Badly.

But it wasn't a social media decision just as if people protested by telegram, the eventual change wouldn't have been a telegram decision. Social media was merely the method used to deliver public complaints, reflective of the world we live in today because mail would take longer to arrive and phone calls also take more time and there are expenses to mailing and calling.

fwiw I think the Aunt Jemima change was tastefully executed, it's the same color scheme and layout. It was a business decision not a social media one.

It's still corn syrup disguised as maple syrup for people on a budget, we'd never buy that stuff

Nothing. It was, in my opinion, a bad decision (forgettable brand name) as a result of adverse media coverage,- the way I interpreted the title of this thread.

It probably belonged in a different thread, but I didn't think it deserved a stand alone thread. So I put it here.

I like "Pearl Milling Company". It's a throwback to an actual name used in the 19th Century. I'd rank it right there with "Cleveland Spiders".

Re: Poor Social Media Decisions

i think it would be a worse decision if they'd renamed it "plantation's pride" or "mammy's milk", rather than the bland unremarkableness they settled upon.

also, pearl milling company is the orignial name for the company that started making the darned stuff. so it kinda works. they'll have to do a heck of a job marketing their historical connection, to be sure, but they certainly could have done worse.

At least those Tyson/NYM photos, with the exception of the Piazza one, were all pre-rape conviction.

Also, at Alonso's age, it's possible he has little or no knowledge of Tyson's past.

The purpose of a handshake is so the guys from Minneapolis and the fellas from St. Paul can show each other that, "Hey, we may have our differences — Fords and Chevys, Catholics and Lutherans and all that — but I'm no threat to you. Allow me to demonstrate my good will by surrendering to you the traditionally dominant hand with which a lesser-intentioned man might strike you."
