Let's Swing Our Sticks in the Dirty Areas And Discuss HocKeY in 2021

short (56 game?) season begins tonight for Isles and Rangers at MSG.

Interestingly teams only playing opponents in their (revamped) divisions this year, so for our guys its

NYR

NYI

Devils

Boston

Flyers

Sabres

Caps

Penguins

every night, and fewer off-days between games than usual.

Islanders traded off a pretty good young defenseman (Toews) over the offseason and Boychuk retired, but pretty much have everyone else back from a pretty good team last year that probably also won't score enough but give you hell most nights. Breaking in a well-regarded young Russian goalie Sorokin, who will ease in as Varlamov's backup. Maybe contributions from young forwards like Bellows and Wahlstrom. Wahlstrom had a brief callup last year after which Trotz basically threw his lunch in the garbage and told him to learn how to play.

Rangers won 3 of 4 vs. NYI last year and always seemed explosive.

Uh the Islanders were ready to play. The Rangers were not. 4-0 win that wasn't nearly that close.

As an aside I really like Butch Goring's companionship as a broadcaster but it's obvious to me that he isn't telling us all he knows, he's complicit in this thin layer of bullshit the pros practice

Re: Let's Swing Our Sticks in the Dirty Areas And Discuss HocKeY in 2021

My Islanders ruined my Tuesday AND Thursday nights this week. First they gave up the tiebreaking goal with 20 seconds left (unforgivable hockey sin, but as a fan you lose the game, you lose the anticipation of an exciting overtime period and you come to realize you've wasted 2 hours watching the thing).

Last night they had the hockey equivalent of a 10-run 4th inning (a 3-0 lead halfway thru the second) and gave up 5 consecutive goals before the period was over, lost going away. Even bigger hockey sin but at least I could fast forwward thru the 3rd.

They're a team that as a rule doesn't do these things, so something is obviously very wrong.

I've watched this a hundred times already, and the multitude of the physical things he's doing here are mind-blowing. Coming from behind and overtaking another skater from the outside, gaining control of a bouncing puck, staying balanced against the other guys momentum, then that turn--imagine all the shit his ankles and inner thighs are doing while his mind and hands are racing too, it's insane

lslanders won 8 in a row, but lost in OT to Jersey on Sunday. They are a little banged up and lost captain Anders Lee for the year (looked like he wrecked his knee in a fall on the ice) and we're missing 2 guys to covid. Twitter says they are importing a high-scoring Russian forward they drafted several years ago but who'd been playing in USSR. I don't quite get how that works but I guess they have his rights in the NHL. Coming off an easy part of the schedule, gets tough again starting tonight

So the Buffalo Sabres, losers of 18 straight, built a 3-0 lead after two periods Monday night while hosting the Filly Flyers.

Two 3rd Period Flyer goals made it 3-2 Sabres who then missed an empty net attempt which would have given them a 4-2 lead in the closing minutes.

Annnnnd you can probably see where this is headed ... Philly ties it up with 1:29 left in the game then scores again 42 seconds into OT

So they're now at Nineteen, including two in OT plus one shoot-out. Record for the season: 6-23-5, which is a nice way of saying 6-28

Half of those six wins have come against the NJD. In fact their last three wins -- Jan 30, Feb 20, Feb 23 -- are all vs the Devils

Re: Let's Swing Our Sticks in the Dirty Areas And Discuss HocKeY in 2021

Sabres looked like a team that needed to fire its coach weeks ago, Islanders are responsible for 6 of those 18 I believe... each one a humilaition.

Meantime, Isles are really feeling the loss of Lee--top line has collapsed without him, Barzal is pissed off and lost, no changes have really worked yet so a trade seems the only answer. Hall from Buffalo is one possibility.

It's been for 5 years at least? Interestingly when the third period ends in a powerplay for one team the extra period begins 4 on 3 and is played 4-4 when the penalty expires.

Islanders last night escaped with a 1-0 ot victory over Philly on an own goal. Got badly outplayed, things are not right for them ever since Lee went down.

Crazy game 3 last night. Islanders got physical and kept coming back, tied it thrice after being behind by 2 but Pittsburgh answered back every time and won 5-4. Islanders cannot win games where they 6 goals, it's just not how they are built.

At one point in third period, all 10 skaters on the ice were sent to the penalty box at once as the scrumming got completely out of hand. Fun stuff but not great for the isles who need to do all that but also tighten up on D and goaltending, which has not been up to their standard.

Some call bounces like that bad luck ... others just call it hockey.

Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs, who are simultaneously NHL Royalty and have sucked forever, finally were a top team this year but went out in the first round, and to Montreal of all teams.

Not sure if the Anglophone / Francophone rivalry is still as strong as it was a couple decades ago up there, but an upset like that might have ignited turf wars at one point.

It's actually the first time those two squads have met in the playoffs in many years, thanks mainly to Toronto ineptitude.

Big win last night in Boston for the Islanders, who are now up 3-2 on a much superior offensive team that was absolutely hammering them for 19 minutes of the 1st period before a last-minute PP goal tied things up, then the Isles went to work on the grind-em-down game in the second and wound up winning pretty much easily despite the obvious talent deficit

And, as always seems to happen in this sport, one team is vastly out-playing their regular season showing. In this case it's the 24-34 reg season (once the OT losses are factored in) Montreal Canadians.

Getting in as the lowest qualifying team from its group/division/conference -- or whatever they're calling the subdivisions (Canada reference) of the league this year -- 'Les Habitants' got down to Toronto

three games to one in the opening round but have now won Seven consecutive games, dispatching the Maple Leafs in seven games then steamrolling Win-a-Pig in four straight.

So the worst team standing is now also the first one in the final four and will be tanned, rested, and ready while awaiting their next opponent.

Probably that the play in this series has been rough.

Not that lacrosse is really any rougher than hockey, but during commercials that sometimes run during local hockey telecasts -- particularly those during Islander games which are aimed to

target a young, male demographic living in lacrosse-happy Long Island, often are cut in a way that shows lacrosse as nothing but violence so it's not a stretch to think that a city boy like

If the defenseman there is deemed to have 'closed his hand' on the puck the refs could call a penalty shot.

Point and some other guy scored in the 3rd. It was an intense final few minutes, as Tampa pulled the goaltender, but was then penalized for tripping Clutterbuck as he was about to empty-net them. They regained possession on the faceoff and pulled the goalie again so it was 5-on-5 for the final minute down there

That could have resulted in another rarely called penalty: if a player with a clear path to an empty net is taken down he can be awarded an automatic goal.

Yeah, the wording of that rule says something along the lines of a player being hauled down with 'a clear path' to an empty net, so it has to fit a pretty unique set of criteria and then you'd need a ref with the guts to call it.

Yeah, after a brief moment where the puck sort of disappeared among him somewhere, it emerged without it looking like it had ever been held or frozen under him. So looked at least 95% legal to me. And that type of call generally has to be real blatant to draw a call in a regular season game. Under last night's circumstances he might have had to swallow the puck whole before the ref would even consider un-swallowing his whistle.

Obviously this wouldn't work or someone would be doing it, but it seems to me there's an incentive just to try to put two defenders in the crease with the goalie in the last minute of a tight game. Preferably, you'd pick guys who are fat, drunk and feeling no pain, But if they glue their outside hip to the posts, and keep their sticks on the ice, they could make the net four feet narrower, giving the goaltender a much easier life.

On the other hand, since they can't just jump on the puck and smother it after stopping it, the offensive team would probably clean up on rebounds.

In that spirit, I remember back in the early 60's when one of the New York papers (there were six or seven at the time) decided to switch two of their sports reporters for one game. They moved the Ranger reporter to cover the Knicks and the Knick reporter to the Rangers.

The guy now covering the Rangers thought one of the forwards ( I think it was Jean Ratelle) had quick hands and feet, made good decisions on the fast break, and might make a good NBA point guard.

The reporter now covering the Knicks saw Center Charlie Tyra, at 6'8 and at least 250 pounds and wrote that he might be big enough to block most of the goal by just sitting down in the crease.

I'll take a (not so) wild guess and say those beer cans were empty when they were thrown on the ice.

I don't know the rules these days. Usually beer sales would be over after the 2nd intermission or so. So they played the whole third period, intermission, and into overtime. If they DID have any beer left, they wouldn't be allowed to take it out with 'em anyway.

Ugh. Really dissatisfying game 7 in a lot of ways. Can't deny the Islanders had a terrific season but for it to end with such a dud is just, bleh.

If you missed it they barely got a shot off for 2/3rds of the game and surrendered the game's only goal shorthanded. May as well have been a five-goal deficit. Played strong d as always, but didn't hospitalize enough of the other guys to wear them down they way they can. Their offense is never their strong suit but was unusually jumbled and ineffective, just a blah game for them. In game 7, with the cup in their sights.

The old sports adage says "Offense puts fannies in the seats, but defense wins championships".

But it is very frustrating when the teams I root for in hockey (the Islanders), Football (the Jets) and baseball (the Mets) waste good defensive efforts because they have trouble scoring.

I hate to see a team with a guy named Cal Clutterbuck lose at anything.

Fun Fact: they got him in a name-challenge trade for Niko Neideriter

The Islanders will be playing 2021 pre-season games in Bridgeport.

Good news for their fans in CT.

The terrible salary cap rules in hockey play havoc with teams every year and lead to otherwise foolish and punishing consequences.

The Islanders traded D Nick Leddy to Detroit for a shitty forward who probably won't make their team. Leddy wasn't always the best defender but a terrific skater who made the 200-foot offense go. They are asking a lot of Noah Dobson to step up and be next-year's Leddy.

Also the Islanders gave away contract mistake Andrew Ladd to Phoenix. They said, hey, Coyotes want a decent player for nothing? and they said, only if throw in a bunch of draft choices too, and the Isles were like, whatever! and they made the deal.

All this to get into financial shape just to resign the guys they're keeping.

Teams also had to pick and choose which guys not to lose in the upcoming expansion draft. Looks like veteran C Josh Bailey could be a Kraken.

Hockey is pretty gay to begin with, I think we can all agree, but I dunno if there's ever been an "out" gay player

"So, hey, it says here that an NHL player has come out as gay."

  "Wow, really?"

"So it says."

"That's terrific! This can really change folks' perceptions and stereotypes about who gay people are and what they do!"

"I guess that's true, but ..."

"So what team is he on?!"

"The Predators."

  "..."

"I was gonna mention ..."

  "FUCK!!"
