JEOPARDY! 2021

Jan 14 2021 11:18 AM

In response to news of newly elected Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene's pledge to impeach a president who hasn't yet taken office, I saw an Internet user respond "I'll take 'People who failed civics' for $800, Ken."

Well, that's the first time I've seen this cliched, but always-welcome, 𝘑𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘺! reference with Ken's name at the end.

It's hard not to have some mixed feelings about that, but good work by him.

He has been very workmanlike, obviously reverential toward Alex, and seems he is getting more comfortable trying to let his own personality out.

There are going to be a whole slew of 'guest hosts' to finish out the current season before (theoretically) a permanent host (possibly Jennings) is named.

Several actors, news folk, and even GB QB Aaron Rogers have already been publicly named.

Re: JEOPARDY! 2021

That's the way to go.

There's no way you can go forward with a pale imitation of the Trebek, but just throwing some other goofball in there would jarring, even if it's the right goofball. The show needs to feel around and see if someone else can find a tone that works.

My nominee: Jeff Goldblum. Or maybe Nelson Figueroa.

Re: JEOPARDY! 2021

The only danger with an actor or a news person (which, let's face it, are actors to a degree also) is that they need to check their egos at the door and cool any tendencies they might

have to prove they're just another pretty face by throwing in comments hinting that they could just as easily hold their own as a contestant. 'Oh no, incorrect, you were thinking

of the leader during the second Peloponnesian war, we were asking about the third ... so it's back to Carlos for the next selection'

Trebek, like Johnny Carson before him in a somewhat different venue, knew how to lay back and allow the guests/contestants to have their moments in the sun.

Levar has been directing many episodes of NCIS New Orleans lately, but being the Jeopardy host would be a steadier gig.

Re: JEOPARDY! 2021

I looked it up.

TOPIC: British Army History

Britain goes back a long way, so I'll bet about 1/3 of my wad. Conservative, I know.

ANSWER: The Army's longest continuous campaign, 1969-2007, began in this Northern Ireland city known by either of 2 different names.

Well, this should be right up my alley. The first instinct says "Belfast," but that "two different names" thing slows me down. The Irish name, Béal Feirste, doesn't really represent a different name so much as the same name before the city's name was indifferently Anglicized phonetically.

I'm guessing that's the trap the competitors fell into, so I'm going with Belfast's neighbor Derry, aka Londonderry, which should qualify as a city even though it's not much bigger than New Rochelle. I'd be a dick and use the Irish spelling of Doire to make myself seem more erudite than Ken Jennings, and then all the Jeopardy! fans could hatepost about me.

Am I right?

Fun Fact: The name Jennings itself usually represents an Angicization of the Northern Irish name Mac Sheóinín.

Derry/Londonderry is correct. One set of my great-grands emigrated from there in 1905. They would have called it Londonderry.

All three contestants went with Belfast although I'm not sure what they thought the second name was. Probably just couldn't think of anything else.

I guess Ulster is wrong?

Ulster isn't the name of a city, but the name of the greater province of six counties that got set aside and renamed Northern Ireland, although the borders of the statelet don't quite match the borders of the province, because they had to do some gerrymandering to ensure an ongoing Anglo-oriented majority.

But "Derry" is good to know for when you get "Ulster city" in a crossword puzzle.

Cooper, I know, has been a contestant on one of the celeb shows they've run from time to time. Not sure about the others.

Many fans of the show agree:

https://www.yahoo.com/huffpost/dr-oz-misinformation-jeopardy-195557833.html

Ever since “Jeopardy!” attempted to amplify Dr. Mehmet Oz's upcoming guest-hosting stint on the show, social media users have been lambasting the TV star for being “dangerous” and shilling “medical misinformation for profit.”

And, over 500 prior contestants dislike the choice:

https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/jeopardy-fans-over-500-contestants-164913771.html?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly9zZWFyY2gueWFob28uY29tLw&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAANSruOKrxVjNxYU3CGuLQYnKJ0S4ig8v4QkO1xoFgYyWzXVQ3MwosKmXx0OEcETsZahLW_yhv7ro3ed_uMjaKVB-3Uei6uBgVYSzlBZhE-aHI8I4n5QSpiSSkRqXSAPVNzGM1l2i62Ro68nF99ozxmLaUMyDOGsIY1560fI3N8LH

Dr. Oz started his “Jeopardy!” guest hosting run this week, much to the outrage of fans and over 500 former contestants of the prolific trivia game show. Toward the end of February when it was announced that Dr. Oz, Aaron Rodgers, Katie Couric, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, and more would take over “Jeopardy!” hosting duties following Alex Trebek's passing, hundreds of former “Jeopardy!” contestants published an open letter on Medium (via New York Post) condemning the decision to bring Dr. Oz on board.

Mahmet Oz, 60, Turkish-American (b. Cleveland).

In reality must be a brilliant guy -- Cardio-thoracic surgeon/Columbia Univ. professor. Biology degree from Harvard where he played both football and water polo, then simultaneous

MD & MBA degrees from U-Penn/Wharton where he was Student body President while in Med school.

The problem is that he somehow strayed into the Oprah Universe and used that platform to advocate/promote various health practices -- diets, cures, routines -- which are backed

by questionable (or no) science and that punditry-over-proof angle that served his daytime TV status so well also made him perfect for the Trump orbit with all its elevated exposure

at the expense of substance.

Re: JEOPARDY! 2021

There's a whole world of bullshitters and snake oil peddlers out there on daytime television, that a lot of us only know as goofy faces in the thin glossy mags at the supermarket checkout. Their marketplace makes for a disparate group — the unemployed, the retired, non-working spouses, the idle rich, the idle idle, the sick, young adults out of school but living with their folks, the broken, the chronically high, and occasionally the power-hungry boobs ... all vulnerable to the pitches of gurus both sincere and (mostly) mercenary for different reasons.

It's a strange coalition, but a large one, and a successful player in that market is a force to be reckoned with.

3) Aaron Rodgers (laconic but superprofessional; understated charisma; weird but good fit)

4) Buzzy Cohen (likable, quick, heavy on quirk and maybe not everyone's speed)

5) Anderson Cooper (about as professional as you'd expect; natural charm tamped down a bit in this context)

6) Mike Richards (Jeopardy! producer, solid, heartfelt messages in Alex's memory win a lot of points with loyalists)

7) Savannah Guthrie (solid, upbeat; decent cadence; not particularly distinctive)

8) Bill Whittaker (respectful; extremely dry)

9) Katie Couric (perfunctory, nervy; overlong pauses)

10) Dr. Oz (nasal, distracting reading style; timing off; hard pass)

I think in the end I think JEOPARDY'S problem -- in addition to weak vetting and/or the realization that there is no such thing as too far in the past to look bad -- is that their

search aimed at two groups: insiders (the exec producer and Jennings) and celebrities. In doing so they seemed to forget that Trebek was neither when he got the job.

Malik ain't a great choice either.

But they need to decide what they want the show to be. somehow, they probably should've been more prepared. Is it possible they hired Richards with the main job of planning this transition, and that his main plan was to drum up publicity with the guest host contest, but intended to take it himself all along?

Anyway, Jennings is the closest thing to Alex, if that's what they want. He's got a history with the show, he's got a little bit of the same dry humor. He's a lot more nerdy. Sometimes Alex would correct/clarify a person on a boneheaded wrong answer or miss, but with Ken that'd come off a lot more condescending. There's always gonna be an air about it that they're trying to beat the host.

Or they could find someone that's actually different in a fun way. I know a lot of people want LeVar Burton, and I imagine that'd be a fine thing. It's 2021 too, finding someone that's going to just settle into the role and do it for 40 years is extremely unlikely. Maybe they should change hosts every year. The change might keep people from writing it off entirely and never coming back.

I like Jeopardy when its on but don't go out of my way to watch. I would tune in for Burton, always been a fan.

They had the perfect guy do the ToC -- Buzzy Cohen. He should have been the guy.

I agree with 62 that they've tarnished the brand, which is probably the worst part of all of this. They turned it into a circus.

This guy beat Matt Amodio in trivia:

Beyond watching “Jeopardy!” on my couch, my experience is limited to bar trivia. My colleagues and I formed a team, We Drink and We Know Things. Pre-pandemic, we'd meet weekly to flex our knowledge at The Playwright in Hamden.

This is where we met Matt Amodio.

Amodio's rival team, the Rogue Scholars, also played at the Playwright.

My team is good. Excellent, even. But the Rogue Scholars? They're stellar.

The DJ, Anthony Apuzzo, would begin the night by introducing the teams. When he announced the Rogue Scholars, the pub would collectively groan. Everyone in the pub watched their chance of taking home the grand prize that night evaporate. We knew we couldn't win against the Rogue Scholars.

Until we did.

Fun read.

Twenty-one wins in a row for Amy Schneider. Longest run ever for a female champ.

Re: JEOPARDY! 2021

All these superchamps look unbeatable, until one day they are. Cory had a shot last night but it wasn't quite enough. All it takes is one set of bad categories, or unlucky/lucky DDs.

Re: JEOPARDY! 2021

It's absolutely true, though, that the longer a superchamp goes, the harder they are to beat, because SO MUCH of the game is timing, and when you play that much, you get really good at timing.

Her first win came over a five-day returning champ, as she came from behind in Final Jeopardy!

No timing there, just good, old-fashioned thinkiness.

Re: JEOPARDY! 2021

Shortly after Trebek died and they were re-running previous episodes, two of the ones they ran were Ken Jennings first win and then his dethroning.

In game #1 he was in a close game but held a slight lead headed into FJ and he got the answer right and his competitor got it wrong.

Seventy-some episodes later, a very similar situation arose but, in this case, Jennings got FJ wrong and the pursuer got it right and his reign was over.

Had the situations been reversed, and the question in his last show been the one in his first one, then he's a zero-time champion and no one even knows his name.

But the chips fell right for him and he got on an all time roll and now he's the face of the game.

Sometimes timing is everything.

If the categories fall in your wheelhouse you can compete well.

She has many wheelhouses.

With Amodio and Amy appearing in short order I am getting a bit suspicious of the challengers they are putting out nightly.

Yeah, for once it wasn't a runaway, but I assumed FJ would get correct responses from all three ... only one as it turned out.

Re: JEOPARDY! 2021

Funny, in that her first victory was a come-from-behind knockoff of a five-time champ by being the only one to correctly get a FJ question — despite it being one that most of us would've gotten.

People who don't fall for misdirection in the speed rounds sometimes fall for it FJ, like having more time to think is a problem.

btw, the clue contained both his picture AND the description of him being the second man to walk on the moon.

Either/or should have been enough for most people. That both drew blank stares from three JEOPARDY contestants is mind boggling.

Of course, they showed a NASCAR driver instead and said it was to promote their other telecast.
