Inauguration

We usually shop on Wednesday but my mom (age nearly 91) has requested we shop on Tuesday this week

Clearly she is expecting something and she's rarely wrong but I hope she is

Well, as Elsa told Jo Jo when he asked what the first thing she would do if and when she was free: "Dance"

I'm suddenly taking an interest in this.

Will Senator Dole show up at 97? Will Vice President Elect Harris wear a sari? Will a Jesuit deliver the invocation? Will the inaugural poem be penetrable?

Will they conspicuously leave a pair of empty seats for the outgoing president and first lady?

Really? This is even close? Even a choice? Trump's bagman. Selling classified US secrets for cash. This know- nothing fraud who takes it upon himself to solve the middle-east Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Who takes it upon himself to lead a pandemic committee and then screw the blue states. This billionaire who never worked a day in his life for anybody but family. This mediocre to average student who bribed his way into Harvard. This slumlord who openly supports Trump's child separation policies.

And a thousand other things.

Like that idea, and "Ex- President D. Trump" would be good, too.

BTW, my wife just told me that FOX News will not be covering the inauguration. (It may have been mentioned on WCBS radio news.) Throughout the past four years, their news department struggled to retain its credibility and separation from their opinion hosts. But now it look like the news side lost that battle.

It's not a news station. Maybe 10 or 15 percent of its programming is news. It's not open-minded and neutral. Fox's indisputably obvious mission, which FOX doesn't even bother to hide, is to support Trump and the GOP at all costs, no matter what it has to say or do.

No reasonable person should ever think of FOX news as a news station.

No. lets stop the fucking bullshit. Call attention to Trump's absence as a departure from our civilized norms. Don't make absurd comparisons between him and a mass-murdering dictator unless you wish to further inflame and continue partisan attacks indefinitely.

This is what my daughter wrote today. I am so very proud.

"Growing up in a small, fairly conservative (politically and religious) town here in CT - I always seemed to be the lone voice of democratic liberalism. I would get into heated arguments with my AP history and government teachers (sorry Mr. Wilkes and Mr. Gambini). So much so, that I would often get thrown out of class for discussing a women's right to choose, equal pay for equal work, or racial equality. My debate skills would get a full workout defending my beliefs. And I always joked about my hopes of becoming the first woman president of the United States. I have always loved this country. Considered myself a lover of history and true patriot. And today is the day history will be written, as the first woman Vice President takes her oath to defend the constitution and uphold the truths of this great democracy. I'm excited for the next generation of girls who will get to read about her in our history books and believe that they too have a chance to make history."

We can either find a way to make a healthier place for these disillusioned folks in society, or white supremacist groups will find a place for them outside of society.

It's bitter, it's frustrating, but it's how civil society happens. This morning brings news of 750 dead in a massacre at a church in Ethiopia, one of several volleys in an ongoing war that has something to do with raiding the lost ark (seriously), but really is just a hellish divide among neighbors that can't find a way to be neighborly.

Civil society is a fragile thing. Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment.
