Ice

Just read a New Yorker Article about the perfect beverage ice and I got to wondering what my best buddies like for ice

I adore tiny little ice. I bought some (maybe) 1/2 inch square ice cube trays a few months ago and through trial and error discovered that about an hour or so freezes them perfectly; sit on counter a couple minutes; empty into large baggie; repeat until enough.

I also got some ridiculously expensive Tupperware pop out tiny ice cube trays that I have not tried yet

Maybe I'm the only ice nut here. If so this'll be a short thread lol

On a side note, I can remember my dad bitching about my sister's first husband loudly chewing ice while watching tv with Sis and dad was upstairs trying to sleep. Hilarious.

I prefer my beverages refrigerator cold, with no ice at all. Ice just melts and dilutes the drink.

I used to have NY (Mets) logo ice cube trays. Gotta be in the basement

Same here. I hate ice in my drinks for this reason. Though I'll admit, cold ice in a warm room temperature coke or pepsi is pretty good. For about 25 seconds. Then the ice starts melting.

Re: Ice

I don't like very cold beverages, especially my morning juice which I drink when I take my pills. I usually pour it into a glass and let it sit on the kitchen table for a while before i have breakfast.

Re: Ice

Bartenders and other 'Mixologists' will often argue for the superiority of larger cubes based on the idea they'll melt slower and therefore water down your drink at a lesser rate.

Of course, with beer, ice is good on the outside of the bottle (or can)

Re: Ice

I love ice. The fact that our fridge has an ice maker--I've never had that before--makes me feel like I've come up in the world. Crushed ice is the best. I feel like the ice isn't diluting the drink as it melts. It's more like the ice and the drink are working together to reach some ideal state.

I'm a chewer. Sorry. I had a cat who loved to chase little pieces of ice that I'd shoot out from between my fingers, like watermelon seeds. When she heard the ice in the glass she'd start making that bleating sound that cats make when they're watching birds. So I'd chomp up some for her and run her all around the living room. I miss that cat.

Re: Ice

I enjoy a mixed drink so naturally I go through a lot of ice. I fill that glass up high -- we also have the fridge that makes ice. The way I pour drinks, I need that ice. Keeps me from getting hangovers, too, I'm getting quite a lot of water in me at the same time.

My kids and I also all drink a ton of ice water. We empty that ice bin out every ten days or so.

I do keep a tray of those big square ice cubes in my basement freezer - that allows me to pour a 2nd drink (my downstairs fridge also contains all my mixers and booze sits up on top) without having to go back upstairs for more ice. Just plop one big cube on top.

Re: Ice

Ice depends on the situation. There is something to be said for a drink with ice in it on a really hot day. For the most part I take my drinks straight, though.

I also have a dozen frosted pint glasses in my garage freezer for immediate use should a beer emergency arise, such as a Friday evening.

Re: Ice

Less fond about ice in my beard, as I picked up on my eight mile run yesterday. Normally I try to kind of brush it out with my hands as I'm going, but my niece finds these pictures funny, so I left it in until my run ended so I could get a photo of it.

How about that! On the day of an impending blizzard.
