He was better than Garth Brooks.

He was better than Garth Brooks.

But probably not as good as Charley Pride.

Re: Memories of Tim Tebow

Alderson was absolutely (for Alderson) giddy explaining the Tebow signing when he addressed the SABR convention when it had its 2017 Citi Field event.

Tim Tebow came up. It wouldn't have occurred to me to ask, but somebody did. I think Tim Tebow was signed by the Mets so there's always be something to talk about (perhaps that's why there are injuries, too). Sandy's explanation of Tebow was the human embodiment of a shrug emoji. He's famous, baseball's entertainment…shrug. There was a delightful nugget thrown in about how if you turn to Tebow's entry in the 2017 media guide, you'll see the signing scout listed is James Benesh. James Benesh handles merchandising.

This is hilarious if you're at a SABR meeting. Sandy knows his audience.

I thought we'd get a September looksee at The Chosen One back then but I guess He had other plans.

He being Sandy.

Saw that coming. They just kept piling veteran outfielders on top of him on the depth chart.

Re: Memories of Tim Tebow

for all his no-bullshit exterior Sandy has a touch of PT Barnum in him.

Saw Tebow play at Spring Training. He looked mostly like he belonged, in the way a minor league slugger might belong.

I wouldn't have sworn off fandom forever if he got a chance however small. As I recall he broke his wrist or something shortly before it might have happened

Re: Memories of Tim Tebow

Yeah, injuries and COVID undercut whatever slim chance he had, which is true of any number of players, including many whose chances weren't so slim.

Re-entering the game at his age was hard enough for anybody, but missing so many reps just pushed any hopes too far down the line.

Watching him play, I really got a sense of what was missing from his football game. He had a few tools at the plate, but the snap in the wrist just wasn't there. I don't think of that as a particularly rare athletic skill, but since few people ever spent as much time as he did working with specialized biomechanics instruction, I'm guessing it's something that's pretty hard to just acquire.

We cheered for him here in the 'Cuse. He looked overmatched even in AAA.

I got to see him play in a spring training game, then again with St. Lucie.

He was a good ambassador for baseball and for the Mets.

I am honestly surprised he never made it up to the bigs, even for just a cameo.

He probably would have when rosters expanded in September 2018 had he not injured his hand.

Man, if he switched to tight end 10 years ago, he might've had a helluva career.

He doesn't seem to make the best use of his Unlimited Second Chances card.

I'd be more upset if he caught or threw a touchdown pass against my football team.

He has already (briefly) played for it.
