I Dig a Pony: The Binghamton Rumble Ponies in 2021

The Mets seemed to drag their feet on announcing minor league coaching assignments this year. All of the staff positions are usually assigned by January, but this year there had been nothing, and while the MRC staff was working under the assumption that last year's staffs were still in place, considering that they never got any game action in. Even if this assumption were relatively safe, even those holdovers would be minus the 25% of jobs disappearing with 25% of the roster spots. Further complicating the assumption is the demotion of St. Lucie, and the triple promotion of Brooklyn. There we were, all mostly in camp before finally a press release on the Binghamton squad. Indeed held over is Lorenzo Bundy, who had been hired to manage Bingo before the lockdown, and hopefully finally gets some game action in 2021. He comes with 16 years of skippering behind in Mexico, the Dodger organization, and the Expo system. Former Met Jonathan Hurst begins his 16th year as a Mets pitching instructor. It'll be his third season with Binghamton, depending on whether you count 2020 or not. I guess you should. I mean, he got paid, and pitchers got instructed. Bruce Fields takes over as hitting coach. The former big leaguer coached the team-then-known-as-the-Indians back in 2011 and had been a hitting coordinator in the Tigers system. He replaces Tony Jamarillo — the nephew of legendary big league hitting instructor Rudy Jamarillo — who had been with Bingo for two seasons. it is unclear if Jammy will continue in the system. You may remember him from such movies as "The 2019 St. Lucie Mets"! Assisting Bundy as bench coach will be Joe Raccuia. Rac joins the Mets after 13 seasons as a college head coach, perhaps indicating a trend by the Mets of shopping for minor league skippers from the ranks of the NCAA from which they also plucked St. John's skipper Ed Blankmeyer last winter to manage a Brooklyn season that never happened. He joined the organization last season after resigning from Radford under a minor cloud. Raccuia replaces veteran Mets instructor Luis Rivera, who may or may not still be with the organization, but is perhaps tired of getting confused with Luis Rojas. Rivera has passed through Bingo a few times now, as a player and as a coach. Trainer Kiyoshi Tada returns for his 12th year in the organization, and third-ish with Binghamton. A strong start by Tyler Megill (he called himself "L'il") in last night's opener against Akron resulted in only one run on two hits in five innings, striking out 10 and walking three, but they lifted him after only 74 pitches because the world has gone mad. Asked to defend a 4-2 lead in the ninth, Joseph Zanghi got only one out. He managed two walks and a three-run homer by the Rubber Ducks' baby-faced #8-hitting masher Oscar Gonzalez and the game was over. Two Ponies were cut down at third base.

Top third-base prospect Mark Vientos has opened the season as a Rumble Pony in 2021. Vientos has always seemed at least a little bit pushed, but this is just skipping over the all-important High-A level entirely. I realize the un-natural lost time COVID has meant, but I still expected him to at least open in Brooklyn. This is at least something of a concern because (a) the Ponies have opened at a wretched 0-5; (b) Vientos has opened at .167; and (c) when guys get pushed ahead, veterans get pissy. There's no word of complaint yet from fellow thirdbaseman Will Toffey, who frankly has been even worse, but Vientos also has the team's only fucking homer through five games. I'm not sure what's going on down there. The rotation thus far (Megill-Campos-Tewes-Oller-Gordon) has a few guys who have mostly been relievers in their careers to date. But today's rainout sure seems a mercy. Far more than Vientos, one-time top draftee Desmond Lindsay (second round, 2015) really seems to be butting up against the end of his career. Struggling to find traction since first turning pro, Linds has started 1-for-17 and while there's plenty of time to turn things around, the track record isn't on his side. Not all the clouds have been dark, however. Infielder Yoel Romero is 3-for-his-first-6, and outfielder Sebastian Elizalde (who really should be in AAA) is at .313 / .389 / .438 // .826 through his first 18 at-bats. It's sort of reminiscent fo the 2005 Mets, with a new manager cruising to an opening day win, sending his closer (with Joseph Zanghi playing the part of Braden Looper) leading to a crushing collapse, laying the foundation for an 0-5 start. There have certainly been a handful of bright spots on the pitching side, led by lefty Andrew Mitchell, who has thrown 4 1/3 innings over two appearances, and given no runs and only one hit. Mitch, who has performed well for the Mets at every level (plus a sidetrip to the Australian Baseball League) since being picked in the 2018 14th round, comes to the organization out of Jesuit High School in New Orleans, most famous in baseball circles for being the home of the schoolboy version of Rusty Staub. Mitch hasn't landed on any prospect lists yet, but I wouldn't be shocked to see him get a look at Citi Field this year. If the Ponies continue on the 2005 track, expect them to struggle back to the .500 mark and spend the whole season within two games of breakeven, before a closing rally puts them four games in the black. The Ponies got a second straight dynamite start from Tylor Megill, who went five shutout innings, but they remain winless at 0-6 after getting one-hit by Akron and falling 5-0. Desmond Lindsay is down to .059, but he has a lot of company on the interstate.

The Rumble Ponies are finally starting to know the taste of victory, having taken four of their last six matchups after opening a woeful 2-17. This small run by our Wilmington Quickstep-esque affiliate has actually dug them out of last place in the AA Northeast Northeast Division of the Department of Redundancy Department, two and a half games ahead of the Reading Phightin' Phils, and only a half game out of fourth. A .240 winning percentage stretches a lot further than it used to. Yes, much of the early season struggling can be attributed in part to the blowing up of the parent club's roster, but the Ponies have had injury troubles of their own, with four starting pitchers on the disabled list. The putative ace left behind has been Tylor Megill, who has nailed down a 3.12 ERA over five starts, striking out an eybrow-raising 42 batters in 26 innings while walking only seven. Such numbers get you promoted, and a day or two ago, that's exactly what happened for Megill, and he now calls himself a Syracusean. The Rumble Ponies led 2-0 and 4-3 tonight, but gave up the tying run in the ninth, and the magic go-ahead run in the 10th. They had first and third with no outs in the bottom half, but a strikeout and a double play and they went down 5-4 to the Portland Sea Dogs. It was their fourth loss in a row, and seventh in the last 10 for a team that's come close once or twice to finding their footing, but just can't get any traction. It drops them in to a tie for last in the AA Northeast, Northeast Division, 12 and a half games off the pace. Not a lot of success at all has come from the starting rotation when Tylor McGill isn't pitching, but two starts back, newcomer Josh Walker gave them one of their top starts of the year, giving up one run in seven innings, striking out nine and walking only one. The 6'6” low-round draft choice has had some big moments since joining the organization of College of New Haven in 2017, but consistency has been a challenge. He's at 5-1 across two levels this years and this was his first breakthrough at AA, so … hey, there's a reason to be cheerful. Stepping up when getting his chances out of the pen in the last two weeks has been Thomas McIlraith. Mac is unscored on in June as part of a streak that stretches eight innings back into May. Thombone has given up only four hits in that period, while walking six, so if you see him, try to talk to him about throwing strikes. Coming on strong with the bat of late is infielder/outfielder Carlos Cortes. 10CC, as he is affectionately known by nobody (yet), has been pounding the ball to the tune of a .358 / .407 / .679 // 1.086 tear over his last 12 games, totaling 10 extra-base hits over that period. That's in 58 trips to the plate, so it's not a meaningless sample size. We've already discussed the release of Desmond Lindsay, and it's a sad a-thing, because his last few games with the team were his best, with two homers, but I think someone was coming off the injured list, they needed a spot, and it was time to go. So many injuries for one so young slowing development to a crawl. The Ponies host Portland for four more games, with Friday Night being Jeff McNeil Flying Squirrel Bobblehead Night, so get to the gate early. It really was a garbage week throughout he Mets minor league system, with the team's four affiliates combining to go 6-18. A lot of Bingo's hitters are swinging the bat well (see the walkoff recount above), but getting nine decent innings out of the staff has become a real chore.

Mark Vientos, the Kyle Schwarber of the Southern Tier, continued his power surge by launching a game-winner in the 10th inning to put the Rumble Ponies up over the Reading Fightin' Phils, 10-8. It was Vientos' ninth homer in his last 12 games. Vientos was starting in left field for the first time in his career, and while some small amount of buzz has suggested it was in preparation for a Brett Baty promotion, my suspicion is that Vientos himself may be heading up (professionally and geographically) to Syracuse. I had thought he hit lefty.
