I just realized that the Italian word for "player" is "giocatore." That, or a related word, has to be our source for "jock," right?

"Jock" was derived from the garment they wore, the "jockstrap." The "jockstrap" (and "jockey") got their origins in the Scottish nickname "Jock" that was the equivalent to the English nickname "Jack," and colloquially "Jock" was used to refer to ordinary man (the way some people might use "dude").

Hey, now you're messing with the Irish. The O'Malley clan is descended from the kings of Umhaill. And while, as kingdoms go, Umhaill was on the small side, comprising about 1/5 of County Mayo, it's more of a kingdom than I've got.
