Tiger Split

It looks like Tiger Woods is better with a driver than as a driver.

Wishing him a speedy recovery.

Re: Tiger

He was currently on the sidelines of the tour while recovering from recent back surgery (his 4th or 5th IIRC). This crash is requiring surgery for leg injuries. Not his first issue with leg problems either.

He has previously been involved in (at least) two incidents of impaired driving (prescription and/or OTC meds, not alcohol). Too early, obviously to know if that's a factor here or whether these injuries are career ending.

Multiple fractures to both legs... and judging from the car damage, those are almost certainly crush fractures.

He was having issues with stamina and injuries before this. I can't see it helping.

Re: Tiger

Woods, 45, "suffered significant orthopaedic injuries to his right lower extremity" that were treated in emergency surgery, Anish Mahajan, chief medical officer and interim CEO at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, said in the statement, which was tweeted on Woods' account.

The rod was inserted into his tibia to stabilize fractures, and screws and pins were used to stabilize injuries to the foot and ankle, according to the statement.

It'll be very difficult to play PGA Tournament-level golf after all that, especially given the back issues he had before this. The only reason it wasn't worse is that he was wearing a seat belt. He's lucky to be alive. He's lucky there wasn't traffic coming the other way, too.

Also, kudos to the Genesis GV80 he was driving. The driver compartment was relatively intact.

Re: Tiger

Tiger, not playing currently due to back issues, served as the 'host' of last week's tour event at the Rivera Country Club in LA.

The sponsor of the event was Genesis, so it's not surprising that that's what he was driving.

Assuming that mechanical issues with the car are ruled out in the crash, I see a future Genesis safety commercial coming out of this with Tiger as the spokesman.

My wife and daughter went to a wedding there several years ago(I was working). When she saw the news reports, they used some footage from his appearance there this weekend and she recognized the name.

She says it was a beautiful place.

Best wishes to Tiger. Continuing competitive golf on its' own at 45 was a stretch.

Re: Tiger

How awful for him. I ain't got no quips. just hoping this wasn't the result of any personal demons grabbing back at him. not like if it was from distracted driving in an unfamiliar vehicle that it would be somehow better. or worse.

just terrible. i hope he has a speedy and full recovery.

Wow that's a thought...unfamiliar vehicle.

That can definitely be considered

Even though it is an unfamiliar car, the gas and brake pedals should be in the usual place, and work the same way, shouldn't they?

Re: Tiger

Reports are that he was speeding both when he left the club, and as he approached the turn. I'm happy he survived the crash, but I'm happier he didn't kill anyone else with his recklessness.

Was a big fan of Tiger when he first broke into the scene. He was a young, minority phenom that was shaking up the a boring golf scene. But as time went by, it was pretty clear he was a prick. Then of course the scandal.

But what did it for me was his good friend Donald Trump. Laughing it up on the golf course, getting the Presidential Medal of Freedom while the country is collapsing around him. It's one thing to be conservative etc. It's another to actually be friends with that guy.

So yeah, I'm glad he didn't die. Don't care if he ever golfs again.

Re: Tiger

As fucking up your legs goes, I find the Ashley Judd story more interesting, if only just.

But yeah, the story shouldn't be whether or not golf loses a golfer, but whether kids lose their father.

I hate the aftermath of these stories. Already there's a small pile-on on whether the car model was safe, as though speeding into a divider was beside the point

I wasn't able to suss out the make from the photos. Was it one of Woods' sponsors or former sponsors?

Unless they find out that there was a mechanical failure, it won't hurt that the news video has one of the first emergency workers on the scene saying, "the construction (or did he say "frame"?) of that car saved his life".

It is the new luxury offshoot of Hyundai and their cars get very high marks for safety. We love ours and hope to be getting a new one this year.

Oh yeah, it's a longtime PGA tour stop and an iconic club in general, made even more so by the fact that the membership features most of the LA/Hollywood area's top movers and shakers.

Bogart used to attend the PGA event each year. And of course if you're Bogie you're not going to stand behind the ropes with the unwashed masses watching the pars, birdies, and, well,

bogies, so they'd let him on the course where he'd sit beneath the same tree each year while watching the action and downing gin and tonics from a thermos he'd bring.

Above is a view of the clubhouse from the 18th fairway.

Interesting, because the wedding was between our friend's daughter and the brother of actor Aaron Eckhart. Maybe he's a member.

Yeah, as if Tiger's driving record wasn't enough of an issue, suggesting that the car was somehow at fault is more than a stretch.

Unless of course it was a Cadillac, golfers are always blaming their caddies.
