It seems such a waste of time

Centerfield
Mar 10 2021 01:34 PM

The Fields are movin' out next week. The first time we've moved in 13 years, and the first time we've moved as a family of four.

I'm paralyzed by the amount of packing we have to do and find I don't even know where to start. I guess stuff we're not currently using, then go from there. If anyone has moved recently and has any tips, they would be greatly appreciated.

I have all of these CDs and DVDs. A few years ago I took the plunge and got rid of all the cases and put them into a book. Now, I'm looking at these books and realizing I just never use them. We've been streaming everything for some time. I can't imagine there's any market for this stuff.

What did you guys do with your outdated media?

Re: It seems such a waste of time

We still have/keep the DVDs, for when my wife wants to put on a movie that we own.

As for CDs, I burned all of mine to digital format and then put the boxes of them in the attic above my garage. And there they shall remain until the end of days.

I'd say, for general suggestions, you have a bonfire before you move. And if an extra 8-10 boxes, you know, ;) end up on there by mistake, then that's 8-10 less things to lift and schlep.

Re: It seems such a waste of time

I've been decluttering since my wife moved out almost two years ago. I've already put in many hours of effort and it happened to occur to me the other day how glad I am that I'm being proactive about this. If I had to start just a few weeks before a move it would have been overwhelming. I've been in this house for 21 years, and a LOT of stuff has accumulated.

Re: It seems such a waste of time

If you're not going to try to sell them, charitable places like Savers and Good Will take old media. (not sure which types)

We just went through the culling and are waiting to dispose of them in a few weeks when we find a specific place to take them.

There is a market for old Vinyl, so google for record stores that buy them.

Here's my advice: You should have started six months prior to when you actually started.

You're welcome

Re: It seems such a waste of time

we have so much old media. never really look into it, but when movies move off of or onto various streaming services, it really makes me glad i have some of the hard copies to fall back on.

we've been in our current spot now for almost 15 years. we need to spend the fucking spring (and summer, and fall) cleaning like we were gonna move, because we have so much damned stuff.

Re: It seems such a waste of time

You can try to sell them, but you're right, there isn't much of a market. I've got everything ripped to digital, and then I kept two small boxes full of stuff from the bands I really liked and the small handful of DVDs of movies I really loved, threw out all the burned CDs I made over the years... and brought like five printer boxes full of CDs and DVDs down to the library and donated it to their sale.

I tossed my CD cases over a dozen years ago and regretted it almost immediately. Not that the format ever made for a particularly pleasing package.

Re: It seems such a waste of time

Youse are all nuts. I still have my LP's. I havent listened to them in more than 30 years but I still have them. And I'm still pissed at the person who stole my White Album album with all the extras in 1987. I know who it was. And that asshole who ripped open the seal on my Houses of the Holy album 35 years ago when it was fucking obvious that I was preserving my albums to keep them in as brand new condition as possible. That same asshole, like 6 seconds later, then yanked open the zipper on my Sticky Fingers album even though the zipper was never opened before that.

You're like the last person on this forum I'd figure for throwing out his CD cases. You and VicSage.

Besides me.

Holler if you've got old vinyl; I might hear ya.

My son and his wife got us a little record player for Christmas and I put on Catch Bull at Four and was 13 again

Besides me.

I kept the insert cards and the booklets, but I'm a child of vinyl and would never fetishize CDs the way I did LPs and even 45s.

Besides I'm old and can't read six-point type particularly well. And lyrics printed at that size don't really project much of the authority that, say, the vellum-ish lyric booklet inside of Love Songs, or even the lyrics printed on the sleeve of Rumors. I read relatively tossed off Buckinghamverse like ...

Loving you isn't the right thing to do

How can I ever change things that I feel?

If I could, Baby, I'd give you my world

How can I, when you won't take it from me?

... and you'd think that I discovered William Butler Yeats by how reverently I treated it.

CDs were a revolution I rolled with very begrudgingly.

Re: It seems such a waste of time

I gave all my vinyl albums that were in 'good shape' to my 20ish nephbro

last year. He's into it so feel I've passed a 150 lb torch.

I have another 150 lbs to dispose of.

Re: It seems such a waste of time

I also put (almost) all my CDs in a binder and chucked the jewelboxes. That was more than a year ago and never once opened the book. That said I'm on year 26 of not having a turntable but still owning hundreds of LP records (I did make an effort to whack about half of them many years back.

The important this is, where are you moving to?

You're like the last person on this forum I'd figure for still having hundreds of LP{s.

Also, now my keyboard is typing a wrong character. The comma key is putting out a curly left bracket. Fucking great! Here goes about an hour that I{m gonna hafta waste figuring out this fix.

Holding down the Ctrl key and hitting the spacebar may reset (undo) whatever happened.

Thanks. I fixed it. Here's what I did:

I looked for an answer on the web. I went through three or four sites. They were all fucking useless. Every one of them. Because they directed me to pages that weren't in my control panel and then directed me to select options that don't exist on my computer. I'll bet they made up that shit just to fuck with people in my situation. Imaginary non-existent solutions.

So then I went to youtube. Same shit with the first video. Then the second video was hosted by someone who spoke English. Allegedly. His accent was so thick and impenetrable -- like imagine the worst call center accent you've ever heard and multiply that by like 80. So I shut down that video. And then out of frustration, I shut down my computer and said to myself that I'll come back to this in a few hours. But while the computer was shutting down, I thought that maybe the simple act of shutting down would fix it, so I restarted the computer as soon as it shut down.

Now everything's fine.

Re: It seems such a waste of time

My daughter just told us that my teenage grandson wants to look through the old vinyl LPs before we get rid of them. He likes "oldies". That made us happy.

It's stupid but I can't bear to part with the records I loved so much growing up. I saved $$ to buy them, I played them so much the discs themselves are worthless and the covers are dinged. Maybe one day we'll get a turntable and I'll pull em out.

I never warmed to the CD as a thing so I don;t miss it as a medium and for all I care you have my binder except for the "box sets" and the New Wave Hits Rhino collection which I didn't bind up anyway
