If you think that McCann is a better hitter than Villar and want to go L/R/L/R, I would put McCann 6 and Villar (switch-hitter) at 8. This gives McCann some protection with McNeil after him and puts a fast guy at 8 so if he gets on with 0 or 1 outs and they insist on bunting with the pitcher, there is a greater chance of him successfully getting to 2B than McCann.

I just put on the game (I hate it when IGT thread starters don't list the time of the first pitch!) and caught Alonso's walk and Dom's final out of the inning at-bat. And I'm watching, and watching all the while, and wondering to myself -- what kind of new uniforms are the Marlins wearing? What are those? Black t-shirts? With no numbers or lettering or logos? Nothing but the Nike logo? WTF is that?

The only thing uglier than Nimmo's path to that catch on Anderson was the angle at which his neck hit the padding. I'm a little surprised he's staying in, really.

I have a question...and if I missed a discussion on here about this, go ahead and tell me to RMPL. Were the reflective orange "NY"s on the batting helmets there last season or are they new? I didn't see enough games in 2020 to know for sure.

It might be a subtle change, but the traditionalist in me finds them distracting when it catches the light directly.

On the pre-game radio show, when asked by Ed Coleman about the starter they had never seen before, Rojas said "We have video of him and our advance scouts told us what he throws".

Really? Did they watch those tapes? Did they read the scouting reports? Does this guy throw a kind of pitch they've never heard of before?

Obviously they either didn't watch, didn't learn anything, or, as I have said often when they are embarrassed by a pitcher they haven't seen before, their advance scouting is incompetent.

When we had a thread of what we would do as the new owner, I mentioned firing those scouts.

I'd say the same thing today.

From a strategy standpoint, that's exactly why I hate intentionally walking the bases loaded in walk-off situations.

REALLY happy to see Jeff get his first hit in style. (PS he only has one strikeout, and the .000 BABIP can literally only go up.)

Well, yes and no.

Yes in that the umps should have called it.

No in that they can't use replay to interpret a judgement call like intent.

And that's just one more flaw of replay use; that once you dip your toe into it, the trend towards feeling that EVERY call should be reviewed

marches steadily on until the whole idea of "limited replay", which is what sold the idea in the first place, gets erased.

On the play itself, that call has been under-called for years if not decades ... so I don't feel too dirty winning the game via one.

Chase Utley and Craig Biggio were the worst offenders, but they had plenty of company.

oe: it could have been worse I suppose, he could have taken a page out of Jacoby Ellsbury's book and simply aimed for the catcher's glove

with his swing and gotten on that way. Ellsbury led the league in those for several years running and almost all of them just happened to

come with 2 strikes on him.

The umpiring team could probably overrule the HP ump if one or more of them claimed to see it clearly ... but that's a tough call when

you're not seeing it in slo-mo like we all did. But replay, no, and this era increasingly expects to have replay cover everything and

probably Mattingly especially seeing as how he's the guy who always seems to want 19 challenges per game.

Not the same scenario, but I'm put in mind of the Don Money walkoff grand slam vs MFYs (45 years ago this weekend) that was negated when Chris Chambliss, playing first, was ruled to have called time. Brewers went from dramatic win to coming up short.

Well, half of them have no chance of homering on their birthday, seeing as it would be in the offseason (unless perhaps we count spring training and the post-season).

And of the other half, 40-50% of them will be pitchers who don't do a lot of homerun hitting. At least, the non-Colón pitchers don't.

HP Umpire Ron Kulpa said that he was culpable. Because it was a strike, Conforto getting hit was irrelevant and he should have called it that way. Oh well.

I'm gonna need a little more than the umps description of that as the rule, I feel like if you turn out of the way and happen to turn INTO the strikezone it's still a HBP no? But that rule has always been pretty weird and stupid.

edit. looked it up:

(b) He is touched by a pitched ball which he is not attempting to hit unless (1) The ball

is in the strike zone when it touches the batter, or (2) The batter makes no attempt to

avoid being touched by the ball;

If the ball is in the strike zone when it touches the batter, it shall be called a strike,

whether or not the batter tries to avoid the ball. If the ball is outside the strike zone

when it touches the batter, it shall be called a ball if he makes no attempt to avoid

being touched.

Of course, "was a strike" is subjective (well, it is with human umps) and it's not like Comforto's pitch was down the middle. it was on the corner.

Also if interest, because I've seen this called wrong:

Makes perfect sense. A hit batter can't have it both ways, swinging at a pitch to benefit from whatever consequences flow from making contact yet being credited with a HBP by missing.

The other post about deserving to be awarded first base when hit by a pitch in the strike zone is crazy talk.

Look - he got clipped by it - he appealed for it and got given. It wasn't like he dived in the box, it was more that he fell over in coming together and made the case. You get given it you take it and move on, there'll be ones that go against you.

Enjoyed the afternoon game. Missed innings 1-2 on my lunch/nap break. Watched innings 3-8 on my tablet while I worked. Took my phone and bluetooth headphones and listened to the entire 9th inning while on a ten mile bike ride around my neighborhood.

A win is a win, cheap as this one may be. We needed it, especially with an off day on the horizon. You don't want to go into a 48 hour lull at 1-3.
