IGT 4/13/2021 (1): PHI@NYM — Dry Off Already

After nine pitches in two days, two games in one day. That's the plan. 4:10 twi-night first pitch.

Not for nothing, but I wonder when the last time the Mets sent two African-Americans to the mound in a double-header was.

Well, I don't know if it's reflected more broadly, but hopefully today's Mets starters represent something of a reversal of the ongoing trend.

Having two African-American starters on the same Mets team might go back to the days of Al Jackson and Sherman "Roadblock' Jones. (I didn't look it up.)

And I'm not sure if they started both games of a double-header. (Jones only had three starts)

1979 Mets - Roy Lee Jackson (9/77-10/80), Ray Burris (8/79-10/80) and Dock Ellis (6/79/-9/79) were all Mets teammates for about three weeks.

Re: IGT 4/13/2021 (1): PHI@NYM — Dry Off Already

Gooden and Young had a good chance, but it never happened.

As it happens, Roadblock Jones and Al Jackson did start both ends of a doubleheader: April 29, 1962. Jackson shut out the Phillies in the opener, while Jackson pitched into the fifth in the nightcap, giving up six runs in a 10-2 loss. It was his last major league start.

On August 17, 1980, Ray Burris and Roy Lee Jackson did it, as the Mets were swept by the Phillies.

That may be it. If so, the only three times it's happened have been against the Phillies. We've been swept and split. It's time for a sweep of our own.

I don't know how much this was commented on, but Lindor getting caught stealing in the first inning the other day was about the worst thing that happened to the Mets in 2021 so far., excluding Luis's dumbass yanking of deGrom on opening day. He needs to stop doing that.

Re: IGT 4/13/2021 (1): PHI@NYM — Dry Off Already

For all the talk of “wasting” deGrom's magnificent first two starts, don't sleep on Nimmo's seven hits and six walks in five games resulting in only two runs scored for Brandon. The 2021 Mets are proving capable of not taking advantage of any asset at their disposal.

On one hand, Conforto's whiff was worse.

On the other hand, knowing how unlikely Conforto was to make contact, saving your outs is key. Alonso whiffed too, right? I'd put it in the top five along with the yanking of deGrom and the shutdown of the opening series, but I'd put those first.

And the season is young.

I think the concept is that with shorter games the players won't be around each other for as long which lessens the risk of Covid.

This is contradicted by split doubleheaders (the Mets currently have 3 scheduled) which requires the players to be around each other even longer.

There was the old Gil Hodges vs Yogi Berra (his successor) comparison: in the 7th inning Gil was thinking about what he was going to do in the 9th while Yogi was figuring out what he should have done in the 5th

Yeah, although if a hurler starting to lose his control gives up a run or two in the 5th or 6th you've got less time to make up for that. Best to get a fresh guy in before it's too late ... or something along those lines.

Yes, that makes sense. Just as long as the strategy isn't "I usually let my guy go 6 innings in a 9-inning game so I'll pull him after 4 in a 7-inning game."

That makes no sense at all. I couldn't understand why Lindor was on second base. It should have been Trevor May (or a pinch runner for May) because he was in the previous spot in the batting order.

Re: IGT 4/13/2021 (1): PHI@NYM — Dry Off Already

The rule was (hastily) put in because, unlike last season,, pitchers have to hit this year (at least in the real league) but they apparently need to be treated as fine China and can't possibly be expected to run the bases. So when the Mets double-switched the pitcher into the final out batting slot, the 'Manfred Man' (automatic runner) became the previous out which was Lindor.

As I said earlier, it was a brilliant piece of strategy by Luis if intentional although I have my doubts as to whether it was.
