Re: Meet the Extreme 2021 Mets

I probably wouldn't have guessed Aaron Loup as the oldest if you'd given me twenty guesses.

Damn not a player over 34. Good, young players

I probably wouldn't have come up with Aaron Loup if you gave me 25 guesses to name 25 2021 Mets.

Re: Meet the Extreme 2021 Mets

Well, as long as you remember who they are, lefthanded relievers are always a good guess for the oldest. Had Blerry Jevins made this team, he surely would have displaced Loupy as the village elder.

But this exercise taught me that a lot of these extremes — age for instance — weren't that extreme, with everybody swinging within eight years of each other. Opening day last season, the spread was twice that. Actually, with Giménez and Canó, the spread would have been twice that just staying at second base. We also lost our three fastest players, and our four slowest along with them.

Regressing to the mean is no fun. Thank God for Betances and Stro.

Add your own extremes — most vs. least hirsute, strongest vs. weakest, funniest vs. humorlessest ... .

Re: Meet the Extreme 2021 Mets

Lowest BMI: Diaz (20.62)

Highest BMI: Smith (30.51)

That, of course, is calculated according to the ever-unreliable officially listed heights and weights, but you work with what you got.

I just realized the Mets actually had not three, but four guys faster than Nimmo in 2020. I left out Slidin' Billy Hamilton.

Re: Meet the Extreme 2021 Mets

The silly things you'll always remember - my wife and I were at a game, and between innings, on the Jumbotron, they had an "Ask The Mets" segment or whatever. The question was "who's the funniest guy on the team?" And one by one, each guy: "Lenny Harris." "Lenny Harris." "Definitely Lenny." Then, at the end, Lenny Harris, with a giggle: "Me."

Re: Meet the Extreme 2021 Mets

Pure guesswork, but I'll go with:

Funniest: Gsellman

Unfunniest: Conforto

Diaz is also a candidate for the latter. It's hard to be the closer and be funny, even if you used to be funny before you became a closer.

Which Met takes the biggest shits? My guess is that it's Syndergaard. I feel like a big strong Thor-type would fire off a real toilet spud.

Closers are known for being funny. Sparky Lyle, Dan Quisenberry, Tug Freakin' McGraw. I even remember Billy Wags as funny in a douchey kind of way. That being said, Diaz never struck me as a funny guy.

I think Gsellman tries too hard to be cool to be funny.

deGrom 10 years. I remember when a poster here suggested the Mets turn to him early on. Well played.

These were ace relievers, but they weren't closers. Since saves have mostly been reduced to a one-inning affair, the advent of the closer has been synonymous with the breeding of high-strung assholes who nobody wants to locker next to.

Yes, but he didn't provide any conjecture about who would be at the other end of the spectrum.

Re: Meet the Extreme 2021 Mets

So, which Met takes the tiniest, daintiest shits? I'd say that's probably Jeff McNeil. I imagine a lot of squirrel-ish type pellets in his digestive output.

Re: Meet the Extreme 2021 Mets

JD Davis might be the dumbest. He's "not sure if he will get the vaccine:

https://www.yardbarker.com/mlb/articles/mets_3b_jd_davis_unsure_if_hell_get_covid_19_vaccine/s1_13132_34529750

J.D. Davis said he hasn't thought about whether he'll get a COVID-19 vaccine.

"It's a personal preference and everybody has their own choice of doing so," he said, noting that he wants to be sensitive to those who have struggled with/died from the disease.

Hasn't thought about it? Really?

Smartest? DeGrom, who hasn't commented on the issue.

Re: Meet the Extreme 2021 Mets

I know. Hasn't even thought about it. Good grief. Carrasco has had the vaccine, and so has Chili Davis. I'd like to see more players state that they're getting vaccinated, not just the one who has recovered from leukemia.

Re: Meet the Extreme 2021 Mets

In some ways you can write it off to the indestructible arrogance of athletic youth.

But these guys still have parents, and many likely young enough to have grandparents.
