I do believe Fritz Mondale deserves his own thread.

Honestly, the first thing I think about is Reagan zinging him about his "youth and inexperience" at the 1984 debate.

Had the balls to pick a woman for VP in 1984, no small thing.

First candidate I didn't vote for, but I was pretty clueless having just turned 18 and strongarmed into Reaganing by my dad.

I always read that as the party saying, "We're going to get our asses kicked either way, so we might as well take a modest but important step forward."

But man, what a monumental sweep that 1984 election was. I get the feeling a lot of dads strong-armed a lot of young voters into that vote. You can vote for whoever you want, but if you don't vote for Reagan, I don't know where you're going to live. Here, let me pack your tutu for you.

It was like John Wayne running against Bruce Dern. A big cowboy got shot, cauterized the wound, and came out fighting with a smile on his face. It was a perfect cinematic moment — especially for dads — and they had the right actor to play the part. Count yourselves lucky that President Trump was working a similar narrative but couldn't pull it off.

Probably my first political awareness of any kind came months later when the govt cut back on my student loans. That probably hurt dad but he never said so

As the obits have noted, Carter took Mondale seriously, a first in president-vice president relationships, putting a practical end to the “not worth a warm bucket of spit” appraisals of the office.

I was a Hart man in the ‘84 primaries (the last candidate I ever worked for), but fell in line for Fritz in the fall. A good man who I was certain never had a chance in hell. Within the chit-driven nominating process, “it's his/her turn” still carries its share of sway.

I strongly believe we'd be living in a better world if he won the election. His loss lead to the birth of the DLC and 35 years of Democratic Party based on the strategy of capitulating to the Republicans. And its more reason why the Electoral College is bullshit because everyone talked about the landslide and it allowed 4 out of 10 voters who opposed Reagan to be ignored.
