IGT 5/22/2021, NYM @ MIA: Reasons

The Mets take on the same Marlins team they outlasted last night. Righthander Pablo López starts on the hill for Marlins, while TBD opposes for the Mets.

That's the official story, but my sources say Sean Gsellman-Yamamoto's getting the ball.

Going to my first Marlins-Mets game on Sunday, figured I'd learn some information about the team this year by signing up with you folks. Just finished watching last night's game on my DVR, looking forward to my first in-person game in over a year! Almost two years!

I live an hour north of Miami, btw. Not much good baseball down here.

Re: IGT 5/22/2021, NYM @ MIA: Reasons

I think I'd prefer them to give the ball to a pitcher, the old-fashioned way, and ask him to give them as many innings as possible. (Hopefully at least five or six.) Reid-Foley. Gsellman. Yamamoto. Szapucki. Even Lucchesi. Whoever. This "opener" thing they've been doing pretty much means you're likely to use five pitchers, and the way things currently are, they can't keep doing that day after day.

Edgy MD

Re: IGT 5/22/2021, NYM @ MIA: Reasons

Yeah, the opener thing is jive coming and going.

In theory, it means your starter can get deeper into the game. But when the managers get to the seventh, they're just going to try to engineer the last three innings, same as always.

Welcome, Roger! This team can be frustrating and exhilarating, sometimes in the same inning. Luis Rojas is a genius and an idiot. Right now, they're held together with scotch tape and spit, and yet they have a 2 1/2 game lead in the division. They have a two-man pitching rotation. Francisco Lindor is hitting .197. They're not playing their fourth outfielder, they're playing their tenth outfielder. And somehow they're making it work.

Enjoy the game tomorrow. I hear TBA is starting. We'll need a scouting report. And see if you can find that Home Run sculpure in a storage closet or something. Oh, and take pictures of the Bobblehead Museum if it's open.

Re: IGT 5/22/2021, NYM @ MIA: Reasons

Edgy MD--I'm familiar with the players on the IL mostly. Most of the guys in last night's game were total strangers--I used to follow the Mets closely, but in the last few years, not nearly so much. Haven't followed MLB in general so much in recent years, but down here all I can get on cable --or all I choose to get, the standard cable package--is Marlins and Rays and the occasional ESPN game, so I no longer have a lot of attachment to many of the Mets or even a clear picture of who they are. That's why this weekend is a big deal to me--I'm recording all three games, attending one, and joining this Forum in the hope of getting more current.

https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gordode01.shtml

It's been a strange season and the Mets can get some Strange as Dee was Dee F A's by Milwaukee today. I hope that the Acting GM is talking to the Brewers now (if the Mets have anyone left that Milwaukee might want, maybe some of Steve $ will do the trick).

From Rotoballer (really):

[BLOCKQUOTE]Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Dee Strange-Gordon has been released by the team, according to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com. Strange-Gordon had been signed to a minor league deal earlier in the season, and was slashing .333/.378/.500 with one home run, two steals and 10 runs scored in 10 games at Triple-A. It seems the move was likely made to allow Strange-Gordon to seek playing time elsewhere after Milwaukee traded for shortstop Willy Adames on Friday. If Strange-Gordon can latch on with a team somewhere, he should be able to provide some value with his speed on the basepaths.[/BLOCKQUOTE]

What you're getting is probably more Syracuse than the Mets right now. But the Mets are hurt, and if these replacements are flawed in different ways, somebody's got them playing hard.

Tomás Nido — young veteran backup catcher who has brought more consistency (offensive and defensive) to his game this year and may be stealing the starting job.

James McCann — veteran platoon type catcher from the AL who had a breakthrough year last year and got a big old contract from the Mets. Coming over to the National League, he's got a big old hole in his swing.

Dom Smith — slick fielding firstbaseman with a powerful stick in the middle of a big power slump. He's been playing left field for moszt of the last three seasons, but will see more time at his original position with Pete alonso hurt.

Jose Perasa — line-drive hitting hutility infielder.

Jonathan Villar — utility infielder, former stolen base champ, but surprising big and can knock it over the outfielders head.

Jake Hagar — minor league emergency fill-in vet. Jack of all trades, master of none. Good for double switching.

Cameron Maybin — wiry vet who has never lived up to his first-round pedigree, but still has a love for the game and is still a useful piece on any bench.

Johneshywy Fargas — Minor league speed demon, finally getting his chance.

Khalil Lee — Power/speed combo with a great glove and arm. He's got everything but he so far can't touch a big-league curveball. Definitely up a year or so early.

The Broadcast team down here just praised Lindor for taking a wide turn off first on his single to left field, but I wonder why more runners don't seem to draw a throw from the outfielder. Where's the harm in forcing him to throw quickly to second base?

Cookie was a third-base coach at the same time Mookie was a first-base coach. He had short managerial stints with the Angels (80s) and Marlins (90s). He is now 82.

The Mets are now pulling Joey Lucchesi and it's so very wrongheaded.

I'd use my best available pitcher in the ninth inning. As soon as a tie game enters the last of the ninth, it's a sudden death game. And since that's what I'd do, that's what Rojas should've done.

I don't have a problem with it. With a runner on 2nd and no out, strikeouts are critical. Diaz is a strikeout machine. So I save him for the 10th in a tie game.
