MLBN is picking up this game for those of you who might be otherwise shut out of TV coverage. This is not a game where MLBN uses their own guys to do a separate telecast, they'll just pick up one of the home or road feeds and broadcast it (mostly) nationally.

Because of the shift the Pads are using, BB-Ref described McKinney triple in Game 1 as resulting from 'a pop-up to 3B-man Machado'. This one was more of a liner but Machado was out there to fetch the double tonight too.

Jake overcomes the SS's error and the misplay by the 1B in LF. I hate that he wasted all of those pitches and had to pitch "under stress" b/c it will give Luis an excuse to take him out too soon.

DeGrom's heartrate is lower than mine, I know that. At 3-2 with the bases loaded, having trouble spotting his breaking pitches, he goes with the same slider the batter has already passed on twice.

Impressive that he was able to get the rookie to (half) swing on that last 3-2 slider. Seemed like he was going to be able to hold off after those previous ones.

I hate that he wasted all of those pitches and had to pitch "under stress" b/c it will give Luis an excuse to take him out too soon. He's still at a below average P/I rate Musgrove, OTOH, is approaching 6 innings worth of pitches and he's not yet out of the 5th

I've always thought of managers wanting to keep their top starters out of the All-Star Game as anti-fun alarmists. But I'm suddenly feeling really selfish about deGrom and don't want him s pitching a single inning for anyone but the Mets.

Weird baseball goings-on in this top of the ninth... mostly in terms of near-collisions, plural (Lindor and a running-to-backup-home Crismatt, Dom and Machado on a squibbed grounder to third.

Yeah, that's how I measure paces, repeating the pattern from the start of the year, as unlikely as that pattern is to sustain itself.

OK. deGrom was also on pace to strike out more than 400 batters this season until he was IL'ed. And speaking of deGrom's paces, the booth mentioned today that deGrom is gonna have a tougher time surpassing Gibson's 1968 ERA because deGrom won't get to pitch nearly as many innings as Gibson did in '68. I'm pretty certain that the booth was mimicking, without attributing, the exact same point Joe Posnanski made in The Athletic a few days ago. I disagree totally. I think that's crazy talk. It's easier to maintain a historic ERA pace like Gibson did in '68 or like deGrom's doing this season over less innings, not more innings. More innings only increases the pitcher's chances of having just one or two bad outings, which could kill the pace because at this level of microscopic ERA, there's zero margin for error.

Of course. That's why, among other things, the lowest ERAs belong to relief pitchers, pitching fewer innings. Dennis Eckersley put up a 0.61 ERA in 1990 and came in fifth in Cy Young voting. While I could quibble with that vote, I certainly don't think any voters seriouosly believed that his miniscule ERA was harder because he threw only 73 innings.

The point is so obvious, you could argue the point with any record, hitting or pitching. It was easier for Roger Maris to average 61 HR's over just one season instead of over his entire career. See?
