TWiB Notes -- June 7-13

-- BoSox beat Marlins 5-3 (in a game which somehow took 3:38 despite being only 8-1/2 innings) in one of the only three ML games tonight

and the only one involving NL East teams.

-- Seattle sends Jerred Kelenic to the minors (AAA Tacoma) on the heels of an 0-fer-39 stretch which saw his ML BA drop below .100

And I note this not to gloat, or to try to justify the trade, or to claim that he's a bust, or anything like that ... only that, between the natural

pessimism of NYM fans coupled with the eagerness of the working press to cater to both that and the ongoing LOL-Mets trends, there were

a substantial number of folks who acted as if Kelenic's status of an ML superstar was somehow already established, or at least guaranteed

to occur in short order. Maybe it will or maybe it won't. Still to be determined.

Re: TWiB Notes -- June 7-13

And speaking of top prospects not always working out, the Phils bit the bullet on the just-turned 27 y/o Scott Kingery this past weekend and exposed him to waivers.

When he skated through waivers (no surprise) he was removed from the 40-man roster and out-righted to AAA where he'll presumably try to find what happened to his career.

Kingery, you may recall, was given a six-year/$24mil contract by the Phils prior to his first game in the majors back in March of '18

The 2nd round pick out of U Arizona in 2015 had himself a decent second season (102 OPS+) but then hit a buck-fifty-nine across parts

of 36 games in the shortened 2020 season and has racked up all of 19 ABs (1 hit) so far this year.

The worse news for Philly is that the big money has yet to kick in - hence the clearing waivers thing. He's making $6.2 this year and $8.2 next

before it ramps up to $13, $14, and $15 for 2023-25, although those three seasons have team options on them so, barring turn-around as

dramatic as his downfall, Kingery is not seeing any of that loot.

Khris Davis, who hit 48 HRs as recently as 2018, was released by the Rangers.

Mark Reynolds breathes a little easier, knowing that his single season strikeout mark is that much safer.

Re: TWiB Notes -- June 7-13

So not only did TWO different hitters -- one in ML, one in AA -- miss bases on HRs yesterday, but both who did were 2nd generation players.

Pittsburgh's Ke'Bryan Hayes (son of former ML 3b-man Charlie) missed 1st as he was checking if his drive to the RF corner made it over the 21 ft 'Clemente Wall'

And the minor league offender was SS prospect Bobby Witt Jr.

Now I know your daddies didn't teach to play like that.

This was the first missed base on a HR trot in MLB since 1983

Re: TWiB Notes -- June 7-13

Bobby Witt Jr.'s daddy didn't have a lot of experience with home run trots. Except watching them.

Witt Jr. actually did touch home plate. The umpire got it into his head that he didn't, and in the minors you can't challenge the call so someone in New York can get it wrong too.

Phils walk-off the Braves with a 2R HR with one out in bottom 9th by rookie Luke Williams (2nd ML game)

2-1 Phightens

I guess you've got to root for the Phils in that situation, as the team further back in the standings.

Not sure which team is the bigger threat over the long haul though, especially with Ozuna seemingly shelved indefinitely.

Maybe that's another question for a dumb poll.

Re: TWiB Notes -- June 7-13

Wheeler & Ian Anderson with dueling four- hit shutouts into the 8th.

Braves go to their pen (A. J. Minter) in bottom 8 and Zach is PH'd for so they'll have a reliever for the 9th.

Phils walk-off the Braves again.

Atlanta scored twice via the L.L. rules in the 10th and the Phils answered with three before the Braves could even record an out.

Braves keep stumbling every time they get close to .500

Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Jun 11 2021 01:42 PM

So Aroldis Chapman had himself a rough night in Minneapolis last night.

Brought in protect a two run lead, he proceeded to go: Single - Homer (game tied) - Single - Homer (thanks for coming and do arrive home safely)

Nine pitches in total, no outs recorded, with those last two hits both coming on first pitches.

Aroldis Chapman schlumping off the field with a weird smirk on his face while an opposing batter circles the bases never gets old.

While we've got our hands full with the Spanish Fathers ...

- the Braves (4.0 G out) head to Miami (-7.0) for an in-division series

- the Nats (-7.0) spend the weekend hosting the NL's-best SF Giants

- while the Phillies (2nd place, -3.5) have an odd Friday off-day prior to a two-game jaunt to the Bronx on Sat & Sun

Re: TWiB Notes -- June 7-13

Anthony Desclafani throws a complete game (ask your parents, kids) 2-hitter for a 1-0 SFG win over the Nats. A Buster Posey HR was the lone run. And, as Gary mentioned, Max Scherzer was pulled early due to an injury.

Marlins lead the Braves 4-3 in bottom 8th

First ML HR for Detroit's Daz (son of Mike) Cameron on Friday night.

The former 1st round draft pick from 2015 (37th overall by Houston) has 65 ML ABs for the Tigers since being called up in 2020

Re: TWiB Notes -- June 7-13

The ugly blown save of the day award goes to the Phillies' Hector Neris

MFY starter Jameson Taillon was yanked in a 4-0 hole without ever recording a single out and the Phils took a 7-4 lead into the 9th.

Enter Neris who, after recording out #1, went: BB, BB, HR (LeMahieu)

Mr. Bryce led off bottom 9 w/a double but was stranded there, so it's on to the Little League innings and I'm checking the fine print

to see if there's a way both teams can lose.

Re: TWiB Notes -- June 7-13

I guess it would be cool if the Yankees had a dramatic comeback and still lost. Winning this one would be perfect for Phillies fans. They'd get to whine and celebrate at the same time.

Phils win. THAAAAAA PHILS WIN!!!!

Marlins also win

Braves lose (to the Marlins)

Nats beat SFG in Game 1 (or Game 7/9th) and are scoreless in the 77% nightcap.

And did I mention that the Yanquis lost?

The Yankees make such a great 4th place team.

Re: TWiB Notes -- June 7-13

If you didn't see the baserunning of Victor Robles in tonight's SFG-WSH game (Game 2), you should. It was like Daniel Murphy running the bases "as if he was invisible" but way dumber. Bottom 10, down 1, 1st and 2d (Robles is on 1st), fly ball to deep CF but before the track. The ball is caught, he tags but overslides the bag by A LOT and is tagged out, DP, WSH loses. So sad.

I could've sworn I wrote a post earlier this season about ex-Met Pittsburgh Pirate Philip Evans' red-hot MVP-like start. That old post is apparently in the ether. Or buried underground inside of a hermetically sealed mayonnaise jar. Nice freakin' search engine we have here, as usual.

Anyways, here's where Evans is going into today's game....

.219/.315/.336 -- OPS+ - 83 -- Hasn't hit a HR since April.
