Re: IGT 06/15 - Cubs at Mets

We saw Alec Mills as a reliever during the Wrigley series. It was the 16-4 blowout game and he got the win with three scoreless.

He's only started once this season but one of his 11 starts in 2020 was a no-hitter vs the Brewers

Pitching in September against the Brewers, in a season nobody really wanted to show up for — that's the way to get yourself a no-hitter.

A merely good throw or a slightly slow tag and the Cubs pull that gamble off despite the dumbpth of it all.

Except that Marisnick was sent by his 3B coach although it took at least two replays before GKR realized this, they first reported that he had run the sign. So, if there was an added level of forced optimism, that's

on our old nemesis Willie Harris rather than Marisnick.

btw, not just a great throw by Guillorme but he also got rid of it immediately. That's either great instincts or possibly good coaching by Lindor (or both) as neither one of them took for granted that the runner was

going to be held at 3rd. Even one arm pump or one of those split-second delays until you realize - 'Oh shit, he's going!!' - would have been enough to flip the call.

Re: IGT 06/15 - Cubs at Mets

Lindor appeared to be yelling at Guillorme to go home. Yes, he got rid of the ball incredibly fast and accurately. If he doesn't, tie game. Pillar's throw had a little air under it as he was moving toward right field, which may have persuaded Harris to send him, but Luis threw a laser.

On Espn, they were extensively discussing the wisdom of taking Lugo out after his inning (10 pitches)--"That's just the way the game is played these days, Rojas has no choice, he's going to pitch May because of the matchups in the 9th," etc.

Then when Lugo came up to bunt, it was all "Of course, you want Lugo to start the 9th, he's pitching so well," etc.

These idiots can explain and justify all moves after they've taken place. I was ready to scream if I saw Trevor May.

Trevor May be the worst reliever in MLB right now. I wouldn't let him in the ballpark in the 9th with a 1-run lead.

Probably not the state, just to be sure.

Yeah, Lindor deserves some credit for his defensive captaining. He's been bringing that all season, even when he was hitting at his worst.

And yeah, special thanks to Willie Harris, who also may have given the Mets more on that play than he ever gave them in a Mets uniform.

I thought it was a terrible send. Not because the play wasn't close, but you've got first and third with one out and a guy who might be running out of gas on the mound. Getting thrown out there just can't happen.

Re: IGT 06/15 - Cubs at Mets

Willie played 126 games for the Mets in 2011, alternating with Scott Hairston between the fourth and fifth outfield slots. In retrospect, he wasn't all that bad, and even had a few big moments. I think the disappointment was largely about him not turning into a particularly impressive defensive specialist — which a team needs when they're using Lucas Duda in the outfield.

He wasn't terrible, but he was sort of indifferent on defense, which kind of stung after seeing the superheroics he had previously performed against the team.

With two outs it's essentially a no-brainer of a send.

What makes it NOT a terrible send with one out is that the Mets did everything perfectly and still just got him by a half-foot or so, and if he scores there it becomes a GREAT send.

What DOES make it a terrible send with one out was that the downside of failing is so high.

They went for it, they missed, they lost.

Very much a razor's edge move.
