And lest it go unremarked on, Maybin and Lee, the now-numbers one and two on the team's depth chart, have combined to bat .029 in 35 at-batz.

Perhaps a cheap option/just DFA'ed in San Francisco: Khalil Lee, Centerfield Edition (erstwhile prospect with offensive offense/superlative defense Braden Bishop)

Similarly/of similar provenance: a semi-familiar face/part-time CFer (DFA'ed over the weekend... and at least he's got bunting experience)

When did Dee Gordon become Strange?

    Re: Centerfield Depth Chart

Last year, he changed his name in honor of his late mother, who was murdered when he was a child.

It actually had always been his legal name, and Dee Gordon was his stage name. Similarly, Tom Seaver's real name was George Thomas Mellancamp.

    George Thomas COUGAR Mellencamp.

Also, methinks Tebow quit too soon.

Yeah, we woulda seen Tebow by now. He couldn't be a worse hitter than Maybin.

Hell, I could go 0-19 and I'd even pay THEM a buck.

Tebow would at least sell jerseys while going 0-19

I figgered that train had fled the station since while Milwaukee was releasing him, they were claiming Hager and trading us McKinney.

I'm annoyed about not getting some Strange, a little.

But getting, say, Lil' Delino-- currently languishing at AAA for the Rangers, as they enjoy/examine Adolis Garcia... and likely a defensive upgrade on both a healthy Almora AND a healed Pillar-- might help ease that burning annoyance... and be semi-realistic, to boot. Failing that, one of the other bargain brands denoted here could work:

-- Medium-sucky at all three positions Brian Goodwin, CWS

-- "Feast or famine" post-hype prospect with real pop Sam Hilliard, COL

-- Poor-man's Nimmo Lamonte Wade, SF

(The Mike Brosseau suggestion is also intriguing, even if he hasn't played CF; the versatility alone would be very, very helpful)

Such is the stuff of GM-ing — figuring out the best of a lot of bad options.

What about Mason Williams? Not the "Classical Gas" composer but the current Syracuse CF? He's 29 so it's not like he's a top prospect but he's hitting (albeit at the AAA level) which separates him from Maybin and Lee.

Need a 40-man move to get him. I suppose we could dump Tovar.

    Or Maybin

He was originally drafted by the MFYs, and is the grandson of former major leaguer Walt "No Neck" Williams.

Something may be cooking on the transaction front because he was taken out of the game after hitting that grand slam.

He was somewhat of a prospect with the Yanx for a tear or two.

Didn't know about the Walt Williams connection although BBRef lists Mason as grand-nephew to Walt rather than grandson.

He's much taller than his uncle but Walt (listed at 5' 6") would have been much taller if he, y'know, had a neck.

Back in the lineup in the second game- 1 for 1. Now hitting .396.

When I clicked on his name in the MiLB gameday box score, it gave his stats, when he was drafted and said grandson.

Guess the references have to get into synch.

Walt Williams is definitely Mason's great uncle. Mason's dad, as mentioned earlier this season in another thread, was (and, in a sense, still is) NFL wide receiver Derwin Williams. Walt was Derwin's uncle.

Mallex Smith probably deserved to be included here. He's a domino that fell early.
