Eating Banana Peels

I've seen several articles recently about how people have been eating banana peels. It avoids food waste, among other things. But is it food? Or is it more like eating the aluminum can that your soup was packaged in?

Anyway, I thought about maybe finding a recipe for banana peel, since we have them around the house anyway. (You get one free with each banana!) I still might try it at some point, but I get the feeling that I would simply be preparing something very close to inedible.

Here are two articles:

Should we turn our banana peels into bacon?

My father used to eat the entire peanut, shell and all.

You don't figure you'd hear of that outside of maybe Georgia but he was Queens-born and L.I.-raised.

And I guess I've known a few orange peel eaters.

Can't say I've ever heard of banana peel chompers though.

I'd have to run it through the dishwasher before I'd consider eating one. Even then...

I guess you would want to eat them so you don't slip on one.

I watch a lot of cooking shows, and if I come across a recipe for banana peels I'll let you know.

I prefer not to eat the skin of anything except potatoes. Compost heaps need feeding too.

Surely one fruit peel you just can't eat is the super fibrous one covering a banana ... right? Nope! Banana peels are totally edible, if prepared correctly. Bananas are known for their high potassium content, with each medium fruit containing a whopping 422 milligrams.

Can't imagine eating a banana peel. Who knows where it's been? And it doesn't seem to be washable. But an orange peel can be washed. But ew.

I've heard of orange peel candy which actually does sound tasty

Really eating banana peels to save on garbage seems pretty weird because as mentioned they are quite compostable or at least break down fast in the garbage

If any one eats one please report!

Monkeys peel bananas before they eat them. Apparently, they don't like the flavor of the peels.

So, clearly then, the primary purpose for which evolution developed the opposable thumb was to peel bananas prior to eating.

I mean, there can be no other logical explanation.
