I think the problem is that recent rule changes have discouraged harder slides. They're still legal but have fallen out of use. There was nothing wrong with the slide except that it didn't have enough oomph behind it to dislodge Realmuto's foot.

Scratching out walkoffs by asking the pitching to be as close to perfect as possible until the league-worst offense can break through is totally not a sustainable model, but it's fun when it happens. Amazingly, if not for a cray-mazing catch by Andrew McCutcheon, the Mets would be sweeping this series.
