TWiB Notes -- June 28 thru July 4

LAA hurler Dylan Bundy did something most of us can only dream about: while warming up for his 3rd inning of work tonight at YSIII, he turned around and puked on the field right behind the mound.

'Heat exhaustion' was the official explanation.

I'd call it 'Good Judgement'.

The Brewers spotted the Cubs 7 runs in the top of the first... it's now 15 to 7 Brewers in the 7th.

Re: TWiB Notes -- June 28 thru July 4

TBR's Michael Wacha is getting pasted by the Nats -- 5 R, 7 H, 3 IP

Not that he's the only one (he was Tampa's 4th pitcher of the game) but it's now 11-5 Nats in the 7th

Trea Turned has hit for the cycle, his career 3rd

Ohtani lasts just 2/3 of an inning at YSIII

Charged with 7 earned on just 3 hits but also 4 BBs and a HBP

7-2 in the 2nd

Also worth noting that that game comes (a) after Michael Kay went way off the ranch in ripping Aaron Boone to bits for sitting Aaron Judge against Ohtani, and (b) buzz is erupting around the Yankees that not only is Aaron Boone on the chopping block, but (b) next in line to replace him is Kay's fellow broadcaster David Cone, of all peoples.

The Yanks have never let a manager go mid-season during the Cashman era.

Re: TWiB Notes -- June 28 thru July 4

OK, losing 20-2 suxx no matter which way you slice it.

But as I've said before on these very airwaves: if you're gonna hit like shit, pitch like shit, and field like shit, you might as well do them all at the same time.

I'd hate to put up a two-spot in the 1st and then go into shutdown mode while throwing the ball all over the field and waste a good JdG outing today for instance.

But as bad as last night was, I'd rather lose that way than to put up a seven-spot in the 1st and go on to lose. Two teams did that on Wednesday.

** The Cubs were mentioned above; jumped out to a 7-0 lead in top 1 then sat back and watched while the Brew Crew score 15 unanswered in a fight for 1st

place contest.

Jack Arrieta (6 R over 1.2) and reliever Tommy Nance (5 R / 1.2) were the main victims but hardly the only ones. I don't think we hit either guy.

** And even that loss isn't as bad as what the other NYC team endured.

The Yanx put up a seven-spot in the 1st off Ohtani et al ... but then coughed up a seven spot in the 9th to lose 11-8 to the Trout-less Angels.

Jerred Walsh* had the big blow: a one-out game-tying GS off of Aroldis Chapman. They went on to score three more times after Chapman was pulled

and only Juan Lagares making two of the three outs in the frame kept it from being more. I wonder if MFY fans were complaining about Chapman

being brought in for a non-save situation? Actually I don't wonder, I'm sure they were. Maybe Michael Kay can go on another anti-Boone rant and try

to get him fired like he did with Girardi.

The game featured 16 walks with arguably the best pitchers on the field [Ohtani & Chapman] contributing 8 of them while recording a combined 3 outs.

Not surprisingly the game took 3:44 (I would have bet the 'Over') and that doesn't even include the rain delay of 2:13

Do you suppose there were any fans left by the end?

* LAA has two of their starting eight named Walsh and I hadn't heard of either one of them. This one is their 3rd year 1st baseman, he's having a nice season

This outburst of double digit scoring is really going to provide some great copy as folks start linking it to the sticky goo crackdown.

Juan Lagares is an Angel? I hadn't realized. I also hadn't realized that he's offensively terrible even by Lagares standards this year, .230/.255/.362 with only four walks in 158 PA.

Went to my first MLB game in person since 2019 on Tuesday night. Saw the Red Sox beat the Royals 7-6. It was hot & sticky but fun. Apparently, the Sox and Royals did not get the memo that this was the year of the pitcher as neither team could hold a lead for very long. The Red Sox took the lead on 4 different occasions before the innings finally ran out.

Re: TWiB Notes -- June 28 thru July 4

So there's been some history of HBPs in Marlins/Braves games, specifically with Acuna being plunked.

So tonight Acuna gets hit with the first pitch by Marlin pitcher Pablo Lopez.

The umps issue warnings ... at which point Atlanta mgr Snitker gets pissed off ... at which point the umps call a conference

... at which point the umps decide to eject Lopez!! Not surprisingly, Mattingly quickly got run as well.

Seems to me to be a hasty and overly nanny-ing call by the umps.

Re: TWiB Notes -- June 28 thru July 4

Phils, behind Wheeler and crazy dude Alvarado, are in the process of shutting out the Padres. 3-0 in the 9th, 1 out

Oooops, 3-1, and its now raining there too.

Nats are up 3-1 on LAD, behind Scherzer although Schwarber left the game with some kind of leg injury (sure, NOW he gets hurt!)

And Acuna scored after being hit which, to this point, is the only run of the game. 4th inning

And the Mets have been rained out, making this a pretty shitty Friday night baseball-wise.

Good thing I don't have any liquor in the house.

Re: TWiB Notes -- June 28 thru July 4

While we await the 2:05 start, LAD goes for the sweep against WSH beginning at 11 AM (WSH does this because of July 4th traffic in the District). Last night's rain-delayed game ended after midnight so both teams will be sleepy. WSH has the advantage of facing a "bullpen game" due to Bauer being placed on leave. This was a big series for WSH and their fans who still whine about not being able to celebrate the '19 WS enough due to Covid (shuddup!) and they question the legitimacy of LAD's WS win (somewhat valid but it still counts). LAD has responded by celebrating with President Biden and winning the 1st 3 games of the series.

I will say that I did think it was pretty crappy of Dave Roberts to have not at least invited Dave Martinez to be on the all star game coaching staff.

True. MLB should have told Roberts to put Martinez on his coaching staff or they should have made up a special designation for Martinez.

I personally think the Dodgers won the 2020 COVID Special Tournament and not a true World Series, but I also hate the Dodgers more than any other team save the Yankees.

That's a sweep by the LAD of the Schwarber-less WSH.

Re: TWiB Notes -- June 28 thru July 4

Braves come back from down 4 in the 9th to beat the Marlins

Padres drub Phils

Nats swept (4) by Dodgers as mentioned above

And of course we'd pad our leads on all of them (1/2 on Braves, 1.5 on the other three) if we can find a way to flip this slim MFY lead.
