IGT 6/30 - Mets at Braves

Is scratching out one-run wins late after getting shut down through the first 2/3 of a game a sustainable model? The Mets aim to explore that question in depth on Wednesday as they enter game two vs. the Braves. You may feel somewhat fried under this blazing June sun, but the guy the Mets are facing is MAX Fried. Brandon Nimmo played the full game in center as Syracuse beat Rochester tonight, and I'm going to express the sentiment that he displaces Albert Almora before first pitch. Although, that might work out differently if hot-takin' Guy Boucher has his way. I understand that an "L" is starting but McKinney and Luis are "L's" and they're in the lineup while fellow "L's" Dom and McNeil are not. I'd rather see McNeil get more ABs than Peraza.

Well, the notion is that Peraza has effectively been Guillorme's platooney partner, and so should be expected to be in under any circumstances. This would suggest that Guillorme playing against the lefty is at the expense of McNeddy.

Both are better defensive options on the left side of the field (as compared to McNeil & Dom) with the LH Peterson on the hill. Probably a factor.

Perhaps but possibily over-thinking by a manager who over-thinks everything... or a staff that inputs too much data. I hope he (or they) made the right decisions. Helluva AB by the $300M player.

Not a fan of Alonso laughing and chuckling it up with Freeman down by four. I would. It's freakin' baseball and barring a horrible injury, Alonso's gonna be as "rich as Rockefeller" in a coupl'a years while he's still in his freakin' 20s. Not that Alonso's hurtin' for dough right now.

I never like bringing long men in in the middle of the inning. Throw Joe Sambito or some other traditional-but-expendable guy out there to stop the bleeding or die trying, and then let the long man start fresh the next inning. This goes double if your long man is a minor league starter not used to coming in in the middle of an inning. And triple if it's his first time out there.

Your post resonated with me because I saw the movie Moneyball last week on cable TV. I'd seen it before. Maybe twice. And last week, the scene that stuck out for me was when an A's player was acting ubpeat and happy in the locker room following an A's loss. The Billy Beane character (Brad Pitt) walks by and has a fit when he sees this. He throws stuff all over the place and browbeats the player. "Is losing fun? No? Then why are you having fun?" And I couldn't relate to Beane. Maybe it's my age. But Beane's reaction made no sense to me. I don't see how one thing neessarily has anything to do with the other. I don't see how listening and grooving to your music means you don't care about the loss. At that moment, Beane's reaction felt idiotic to me. Your post triggered that reaction. I used money as a substitute for "two superstars on top of the world". I'm sure they'll both lose this night's sleep over the fact that you're not happy with their socializing. Call Bob Gibson. Not a fan of Alonso laughing and chuckling it up with Freeman down by four. I've been thinking about this when I've watched Mets-Braves games this season. When Albies got his RBI single back in the first, he and Pete were yucking it up at 1B. A couple of weeks ago when Nido got hit, Freeman went down the line to check on him, and when Nido took his base, it looked to me like Freeman said something like "tough break, I've been there". The rivalry seems friendlier than it was in the days of Larry Jones. Nothing wrong with that. It's not like the Mets were going to start scoring runs if Szapucki threw a fast one at Freeman's head. On the other hand, the Mets and Phillies always seem to be on the verge of beating the crap out of each other as soon as they take the field.

With rehab assignments the only transactions today, there were, for once, no changes to the big league squad. It is curious to see Joneshwy Fargas "assigned" to a team whose season hasn't begun yet, and in fact a team in a league that hasn't yet debuted.



Look for that to change tomorrow, as more paperwork looms for the Mets than the prosecution of the Trump organization. Activations, pitcher shuffling, banishments, 60-Day assignments ... it'll all be there.

They are not considered an official minor league, so games aren't shown on MiLB.com.
