It's the second try at a deGrom day vs a 1st place team ... only now it comes with 22% less action!!

2:10 first pitch ... assuming no continuation of the recent deluge.

Between deGrom and Burnes, we could have a combined *double* no-hitter today.

Re: Brewers @ Mets IGT 7/7/21 - Game 1

It's pretty bold of the Brewskis to take advantage of the reschedule and switch up their strategy of using a sacrificial lamb against deGrom and instead burn Burnes in Game One against deGrom.

They're putting their chips in sweeping the afternoon, but risking getting swept in the series in doing so.

I checked his splits, though, and Burnes, like deGrom, is better during the day. So maybe that plays into it also.

And hey, if you want to be the best, you gotta beat the best. So credit Ned Yost or Craig Counsell or Harvey Kuenn or whoever the Brewers' skipper is these days.

Before I knew that the Brewers would do this, I was hoping that the Mets would have deGrom pitch the night game against Burnes. deGrom's head and shoulders better than everybody this year. He should be going up against the opposing aces, whenever possible.

Just catching up here after watching the game (starting around 4PM) via catch-up mode.

Would have been a VERY frustrating loss but instead turns into a quite inspiring win.

And now NYM bats have gotten to G. Cole, A. Chapman, C. Burnes, J. Hader, and B. Woodruff, to one degree or another, over the last four games.

Two weeks ago we weren't hitting any hurlers.

https://nypost.com/2021/07/07/rob-manfreds-split-doubleheaders-are-stealing-from-baseball-fans/amp/?__twitter_impression=true

Gary addressed this early on during Game 1

Apparently the official reasoning given was that the weather looked more iffy as the day/night went on so a single admission late-starting DH would make it less likely to get in both games,

and that an early-starting single-admission DH would be unfair to the people who bought tickets in advance planning for a 7:10 Wednesday night first pitch.

So Vaccaro's idea of Manfred simply banning split-admission 7-inning DH's would inevitably run up against the 'but we need an exception in this case' scenario which in turn would lead to

teams conjuring up any excuse -- future weather, future travel, etc. -- to make an end run around the rule.

It's like at one point during the Selig era where minimum distance standards to OF walls were adopted for any future stadium builds ... and then MLB promptly went about granting exemptions

to any and all teams that requested a waiver: hence Cincy, Houston, YSII, etc.

I think you missed the point. The issue is not that split doubleheaders exist.

The problem is the length. Both games should be scheduled for 9 innings.

None of the stated “concerns” mentioned above are exacerbated by 9 inning games, nor alleviated by making both 7 innings.

I think I prefer 7 inning games now though ...

this may simply be related to the fact that when there's a double header that starts early i'm far more likely to see it (the average game starts at 00:10 so i often listen to the first half inning while going to sleep and that's it) but there's something about the preponderance for starting pitchers to do a bigger proportion of the overall game that I like.

I think you missed the point. The issue is not that split doubleheaders exist.

The problem is the length. Both games should be scheduled for 9 innings.

Well, it's both really.

Gary has been saying since the Yanqui series (and probably before that) that split 7-inning DH's are an abomination as they change people full prices for cut-down games.

At least with a single-admission DH those who pay for a ticket get 1.56 games for the price of one.

But since he went on about how unfair those were only to have the Mets do it the very next week he gave the official explanation as to why it was done.

As for simply making the games nine innings: MLB, for better or for worse, has decreed that DHs are seven innings these days and I don't see how it's within the power of a

team (both teams?, just the home team?, with permission from MLB?) to simply decide that today's double-dip is going to consist of nine innings each even though last time

and probably next time we're going to play a pair of sevens. If nothing else, choosing what length of game they feel like playing that day has a whole 'nother set of issues

that need to be dealt with starting with, but not limited to, telling the players that they're going double full-length today despite what the pre-season agreement says.

And mainly I was specifically addressing Vaccaro's argument that Manfred could and should simply decree to outlaw the split-7's. I personally would be fine with that but

somebody somewhere is going to argue, as the Mets apparently would have on Wednesday, that an exception needs to be made in this case and then the flood gates are

open for the same thing in other circumstances.

I don't buy it. First, there would be no basis for the Mets to request some “exception,” nor is there a basis to suggest they would have even sought one. They would have just played 9 innings starting at 1:10 and 9 innings staring at 7:10.

Second, the Commissioner has had no trouble making awful unilateral decisions that everyone has gone along with, so the odds that now a parade-of-horribles-type of “exceptions” would suddenly pop up are…very slim.

So you think it's within the power of the Mets to simply decide to play multiple nine inning games yesterday while every other DH over the past two seasons has been sevens?

Could they compromise and decide to play eight? Would the Brewers get a say in any of this? Would the union? Would the umps? Would MLB?
