IGT - Mets @ Pittsburgh, 7/15 ... make that 7/16

Frayed Knot
Jul 15 2021 04:17 PM

Lemme tell you something you young whippersnappers, when I was a kid they played baseball games on All-Star week Thursday, not like these sissies playing today.

Mets & Pirates finish up their 7/11 season series (7 games spread across 11 days). Celebratory Slurpees* will be consumed in honor, hopefully three of them.

Marcus Stroman goes against someone not named Marcus Stroman, and in fact not named at all by the Pirates to this point.

Maybe that's why Gary scheduled his days off for this weekend... before he knew he'd still be calling the games from Queens. I think that Howie is off this weekend, too.

It will not be Gary Cohen doing play-by-play and PRAISE WHOMEVER! it won't be Gary Apple... it will be Gary Thorne:

From Wikipedia (so you know it's true): Thorne was removed from the Orioles' booth in the midst of a contract disagreement during the 2020 season, with the team invoking

the right not to pick up his contract through the schedule changes brought about by COVID-19. Thorne was let go by MASN entirely on January 23, 2021.

Now that I see that it sounds familiar but there seem to be a bunch of stuff that slipped my mind about baseball during the Covid era.

Gary was trying to negotiate his contract mid-season with the O's last year, and they told him to get stuffed and yanked him from the booth.

He was let go officially in January.

Keith must have momentarily mistaken himself for John Kruk.

What a disastrous start for the SHaMs. Punked by a last place team, again, no response after a "fight", may have lost their best guy to an injury, Drew Smith coughs it up on his very first pitch of "leverage." But nobody can stop talking about how Alonso is terrific for winning a batting-practice contest.

Yeah, it really did feel like that was no one in the headsets helping him out.

That fight was odd in that it seemed to fire up the Pirates and take all the life out of the Mets. I imagine that's what life with Stroman is like. Someday he's the spark that lights you up, and some days, it's like, "Oh, more of this shit again?"

But coming out flat after a four-day break is a bad look.

G-Fafif
Jul 17 2021 08:29 AM
Re: IGT - Mets @ Pittsburgh, 7/15 ... make that 7/16

Stroman committing the sin of exuberance for retiring a batter evoked a memory of then truly unknown Terry Leach pumping a fist upon striking out Dusty Baker at Dodger Stadium on July 17, 1982 (almost 39 years to the day). When the Dodgers completed their inevitable ninth-inning comeback off Neil Allen, Baker, according to a few articles I was able to access, gestured angrily toward the Mets dugout, clarifying later that it was intended only for Leach and berating himself for stooping to Leach's level.

Given his career arc and background, I've considered Leach kind of a proto-Dickey. Perhaps I should amend that to proto-Stroman.

Leach for his part said he was just doing what he'd always done, which was a little surprising in that during is previous Met appearances, Terry didn't come off as particularly emotional on the mound and when he established himself a few years later, his manners couldn't have been much milder.

It was a big deal for a day or two. When the Mets stomped the Dodgers the next afternoon, they were very much “this is for Leach,” particularly Stearns and Bamberger. Still, Terry didn't mention it or his apparent trademark emotion in his 2000 memoir.

Re: IGT - Mets @ Pittsburgh, 7/15 ... make that 7/16

To steal from Stefon on SNL, that Mets loss had everything (note: with a win, everything is tolerable):

They lost.

They lost to a much worse team.

It was boring.

It was long.

There were many pitching changes (some of these overlap).

There was a rain delay.

A Met got hurt.

There was a fight which the other team started and it fired them up but not the Mets.

The Mets did nothing to get back at the player that started the fight (specifically, it was their #69 who was not nice).

Luis did something stupid (I don't remember anything specific but I'm sure that he did, let's go with using Familia).

The HP ump sucked (did he get a commission for every TO he granted?).

Re: IGT - Mets @ Pittsburgh, 7/15 ... make that 7/16

I think we touched on this earlier in the season, but the word around the league has to be that if you mess with Stroman a little, you can get in his head. It's no surprise that's what teams are doing. It's on Stroman to chill a bit and think about the big picture.

Re: IGT - Mets @ Pittsburgh, 7/15 ... make that 7/16

I don't know if he has a chill gear.

I look at that footage of Richard Sherman going nuts in front of his in-laws house and I'm thinking that he's the same superhumanly intense Richard Sherman who was fascinating and entertaining when he'd tell off a media blowhard like Stephen A. Smith, altered into the crazy beast by maybe one or two too many beers.

I don't know if some guys become the stars they are by just banging up on Ritalin and Red Bull, or some just constantly put themselves in a hyper-intense, chip-on-the shoulder, fight-or-flight state of mind to generate enough juices to use as a PED, but Marcus seems like the buddy that's great to have in your corner, but kind of scary for you to be in his, because he just never seems to let up on the combative posture.
