July 5 Game Time

Monday is the “holiday” because Independence Day falls on a Sunday. So why does Monday's game start at 7:10 PM??

The Mets are nominally “on the road” this weekend, but of course not really. And yeah, they're playing at 7 PM Sunday, but again, no travel.

Our opponent, Milwaukee, has a day game today in Pittsburgh. If they were coming in from the West Coast, I'd get it. But Pittsburgh?

More day games on holidays.

More day games on Saturdays.

Only day games on Sundays.

More day games on weekdays.

Stupid.

As an afternoon napper I'm OK with this. But yeah, if I'm local and there's no day game, that's just ridonk-adonk

Ratings are higher in the evenings. End of story.

I have forgotten to mention this here: the Mets are considering this. I received a survey from the Mets regarding game time preferences for 2022 Saturday home games.

Personally, I think having some Saturday evening games makes sense…in the summer. Obviously April/May Saturday games should be 1:10 starts. And I also am a big fan of the 4:00 start on Saturday games in June/September.

April, and even May, night games on Saturdays in the northeast / midwest is the dumbest thing ever. The Mets weren't first on that bandwagon (I recall the Phils as early adopters) but they took to it almost exclusively in recent years even as the Yanx have managed to avoid it almost entirely (except when mandated by network TV).

I remember Tim McCarver saying he never even read the schedule for weekends.

On weekdays, his team might have a day game or a night game or even a day off, so he had to check, but on weekends, he just assumed there was a night game on Friday, a day game on Saturday, and a day double header on Sunday.

I would guess that he was often pleasantly surprised on Sundays.

There are no day games today in all of MLB.

I imagine if the schedule was different, it would be remarkable enough that he'd hear about it. But maybe I should check, say, the 1968 Cardinals schedule and see how well his system would have held up that year.

it's a weird day today because I guess most people just aren't doing _anything_? I'm so beyond burnt out from this weekend, but I guess in other circumstances would be a perfect time to have another BBQ or something and then I'd much rather the game tonight when I can relax and watch versus trying to follow while doing things.

Re: July 5 Game Time

That of course is the stated justification for every night game start. (Day games benefit attendees, not tv watchers).

Re: July 5 Game Time

"Day games benefit attendees, not tv watchers", allow more children to attend which is good for the future of the game, allow more families to watch or go as a family unit which is also good for the future of the game, allows more people to enjoy a game without as many drunk fans... but if a team owner also owns a RSN he wants eyeballs on his channel so that supersedes anything else.

there are millions of tv viewers and like 20k people in the stadium?

a 1pm start probably monopolizes my whole day. a 7:10 (or maybe a 6:30?...) start allows me to do things and still top it off with the game. Even kids. There are large amount of kids that are busy pretty much every saturday afternoon.

Also plenty of people are working today anyway. Or Saturday/Sunday afternoons. Of course, the way the game is going much of the people that are also can't really afford to go to many games.

Honestly the 'best' solution is probably something akin to this mish-mash we have now, where there are start times running the gamut appealing to people of all different schedules. We may have to be dragged there, but we ARE moving to a less "Everyone works 9-5 and goes home" society (again, class arguments here).

Re: July 5 Game Time

The most obvious counterpoint is that there are ample 7:10 starts Monday-Friday and allowing the occasional afternoon start - especially on a National holdiday - is not an imposition, and in fact may well be preferred by many, including potential tv watchers.
