I'm against it too, but yeah, I agree that if they're going to do, it's good that they're doing it in a thoughtful targeted sort of way. Maybe Edgardo Alfonzo or Turk Wendell or Todd Pratt or somebody shows up for a first pitch.

Maybe not. Maybe the Mets didnt get league approval until just now. It usually takes at least one whole season/year to get league approval for a uniform change or alternate uniforms and Cohen just recently took ownership of the team. That could be it because this kind of announcement is usually made before the season starts.

I think that's a load of horseshit -- the Wilpons reinventing the Mets origin story to justify their black uniforms roll-out to that portion of the fan-base that might've been averse to the drastic uniform change. The Mets took blue from the Dodgers and orange from the Giants, and that was it as far as colors were concerned. If the Mets took black from the NY Giants, then where the fuck was that black for the first almost 40 years of the franchise? What? The Mets took a color for their official uniform and logo that they never used before the late 90s? Maybe the Mets took green too because one year, the Dodgers uniforms were green. Maybe the Mets took red as well because the Dodgers numbers were red. Today, though, you can say that the Mets colors include black, with the Mets having worn those black unis for close to 15 years.

Turns out though, that teams aren't bound to wear exactly the colors they scribbled down on a press release 60 years ago (which was almost pink btw) for all eternity. It's beyond stupid that teams (mostly certain other teams) think they have to wear something because it's the way baseball players looked 100 years ago. It's 2021, bend the mold a little.

I agree. Of course teams can change their colors. And it would've been more honest for the Mets to acknowledge what fans already knew when the Mets first went to black: that the Mets were changing their colors instead of this insulting bullshit explanation that Joan Payson had chosen blue, orange and black to be the Mets official colors back in 1960 or '61.



He pulled the same lie in 2009 during Citi Field's inaugural season when he said that the green seats were an homage to the Polo Grounds in order to to placate old NY Giants fan who were offended that the new stadium had so many Ebbets Field touches but nothing for the Polo Grounds.

That's before you even take a single step into the Citi Field rotunda, which is also an Ebbets knockoff.

I don't love them, but I don't mind an occasional appearance. My objection previously was that black became the dominant color. It wasn't just an alt jersey making an occasional appearance -- batting practice jerseys and caps, jackets, game caps with a black crown, black caps -- and the worst, the drop shadows on the beautiful and iconic pinstripes, which were banished to alt status. When you have one of the best uniforms in baseball, you kind of have a responsibility not to screw them up, especially when you've had a basic look for decades. It's a thread connecting the team from Stengel to Seaver to Gooden to Piazza to Wright to deGrom. Tinker around the edges, sure. Mix in an alt or two, OK. But don't mess with your heritage.

Green is probably the default HOK seat color. they were just, as was typical (and so far not much as changed here) only motivated to do 'just enough' and didn't even consider seat colors. Like, I'm sure they would've gotten to a museum/HoF thing eventually, or eventually decorated the rest of the place. If they had done _some_ and were just like "It's a new stadium! It just opened! 2009 will be devoted to decorating and painting. growing pains, that probably would've been fine, but as usual they thought their half-assed 'just enough' would placate people. There was some document pre-2009 that was going to call Left Field landing Coogan's Bluff, or Coogan's Landing, or something like that. THAT would've been a nice little tribute. And they didn't even change the name to a sponsor (Thomas Tew these days btw) for a few years if I recall, it was just "Left Field Landing" bland. Likely someone interesting mocked up the Coogan's Bluff name, and the Wilpons never saw it, so when it came time to name the sections they're just were like 'sprinkle in some BIG words like excelsior, Empire, metropolitan, and promenade, 'field gold' and Sterling" and never even saw the original mockup. Just like the RF outfield seats were 'just enough' overhang to invoke ..Detroit was it? Which was fine, but It should've been a little higher, and a little closer. That's the whole point. Outfield seats that are close. And then they brought the fences in a bit and now it's like one row over and all it does is make it hard for anyone in the backrows of the otherwise great seats underneath not be able to see fly balls. The pole corners of this stadium are really clunky. But I digress. Black Uniforms. Maybe i'll get a black shirt if they start selling those again too.

It's not. Think of the gray as the canvas the team uses to present its artwork of a uniform. Home whites and road grays are the neutral canvases that every team gets to work with.
