The Craft Beer Thread (feat: Botty McBotface)

The bartender quickly and quietly replied, “I'm drinking a Bud Light.”

“Why are you drinking a Bud Light?” the man asked.

“Well… this Bud Light is actually a Bud Light Platinum, which is a much better beer,” the bartender explained.

“So, why the nickname?”

“My last name is Bud Light Platinum.”

“Oh, I see,” the man said, and he wandered away.

That 'story' was a response I got to what beer Botty McBotface is drinking (our resident AI beer reviewer) and I needed someone else to chuckle at it with me.

I rarely drink soda, but we always have Cherry Coke in the house. It's KB's go-to

beverage. I've found two shots of vodka and a can of it with a lot of ice is magic

for whatever ails me in the morning.

Bud Light is any form is not beer. It is a beer-like substance devoid of soul, sold to people who don't know any better and don't want to.

I'm getting a lot of beer-related assignments at work.

Several A-B Inbev things in fact, and today at the supermarket (no line drama for me) I decided eff it, and picked up a 12 of Budweiser Supreme. This is Budweiser in a black and gold can and a slightly higher price.

Just opened a can sitting out here grilling some pork chops and listening to Howie and Maz call this 9th inning.

I would say of the fizzy yellow beers I have the most affinity for the red-white-and-blue Budweiser, just because I associate it with baseball and the sort of dignityof the brand, which imo they have really mismanaged for the last 35 years. I can't tell if this Supreme formulation is much of an improvement, maybe a little sweeter? Anyone have a Bud lately?

A Budweiser in a fancy can doesn't really sound any better. I will admit though that I enjoyed the Jim Beam copper lager that they released a few years ago. I think those are gone now.

I readily admit to being a beer contrarian. I don't like IPA's, especially the heavier-hopped doubles and triples. I don't think it's necessary to have hand-to-hand combat with what I'm drinking. So I search for the occasional lonely craft lager or pale ale among the dozens of IPA's on the shelf. My go-to's this season are Allagash Seconds to Summer Lager and Narragansett Fresh Catch Ale. My local brewery also has a Kolsch that's spot-on for a hot afternoon.

As for Budweiser, no matter the formulation, bleh.

IPA is barely a style anymore, it's been so muddled. But what I suggest if you're confronted with a heavy IPA lineup and nothing else that suits your style seems appealing, is veer towards New England IPA if you haven't tried it. It's not the aggressively pined style of ten years ago (those are actually a little harder to find now, typically that's called 'West Coast IPA') New England IPAs are not, or barely, bitter. The hops are added later, to undergo biotransformation which unleashes all the fruity notes of the hops without all the bitterness. "juice bombs" so to speak. Some of them add lactose too, as a sweetness wrinkle, which can be okay but I often find those stray too far into sickly sweet and aren't quenching enough for a beer.

As for budweiser's latest novelty lager.. I haven't tried it. Between craft expansion, fatherhood, and pandemic, I don't find myself in a lot of places where the pickings are slim enough for that. My impressions of all these are always that they're just bud with a little bit bigger flavor note somewhere. That often doesn't make it 'good' and it makes it taste like a normal bud, but off, so it never sticks around. Bud Select, Bud Black Crown, etc.

Budweiser had a dedicated 'Black Crown' bar in the Citi Field parking lot for the ASG. I tried it but have no memory of what I thought of it.

Yeah, NEIPA's and session IPA's are less bitter and crunchy, but I prefer the smoothness of a lager, or the crispness of a regular pale ale. One thing that I stumbled on (but wish I hadn't) was a Harpoon Dunkin Donuts Maple Cream Blonde Ale. It crossed so many bounday lines that I don't think I could taste food properly for about 24 hours.

It sounds horrible, I know. But being a stout it has a mouth feel that is kind of incredible. You almost have to approach it as something other than a beer. I've had it on tap at the brewery and when they can it, it holds up pretty well. I have to be in the mood for it because it's pretty heavy; it's not a summer beverage.

It's available in NJ, which is odd for a small Colorado brewery. They also have a Nitro milk stout which is widget-free and pretty good as well.

Left Hand is pretty old, they're from the "first wave" of the craft beer boom. Back then the market for craft beer wasn't as much "hyper-local taproom/community" as it is now, so you sorta had to piggy back Sam Adams and try to get into a bunch of places all over with wide distro.

I haven't had this one from them, but I'd try it. Another peanut butter one that's probably on par is DuClaw's Sweet Baby Jesus.

I dropped beer this summer but am keeping it fake with nonalcoholic beer, which is a big thing with those sober-curious kids.

I've had 8 or 10 brands so far. None are perfect but most do the job I ask of beer these days, which is to accompany me while I grill pork chops and listen to John and suzyn call the mfys game. I have an issue paying craft beer prices for buzz-less beer so this weekend I picked up a 12 pack of Budweiser zero.

NA has come a long way. I've been drinking less the last month or so, trying to knock a few pounds/LDL/Systolics off, but generally speaking I just drink water then. There are so many rich delicious stouts coming up for the winter though..and they're all like 900 calories each..

I am partial to the various Athletic Brewing products. Generally their N/A IPAs and dark beers are all pretty tasty. I have 1-2 real ones after work at a real brew pub and then come home and switch off to the N/As and it's working for me.

Re: The Craft Beer Thread (feat: Botty McBotface)

I have only had one non-alcoholic beer, though I didn't realize it when I bought it. I didn't notice it until I was putting in my beer fridge at home. It was an Italian Pilsner by Untitled Art and it was actually pretty good. If I hadn't seen the label, I doubt I would have been able to tell it was non-alcoholic. That said, if I had to listen to a game with the Yankees feed, I believe I would need something with substantial alcohol to help me get through it. Maybe a nice bourbon barrel aged Stout would do.

I have been told that Athletic Brewing makes some good N/A beers.

Personally, I really love stouts. I'm rather fond of Porters, Belgian Quads, and Barleywines as well. I have gained an appreciation for a good mead as well. Okay, okay, I admit it, I'm a craft beer nerd.

I actually found that Athletic's Upside Dawn Golden Ale is pretty good. You can always tell there's something missing in an NA, but this came pretty close to the real thing.

On our road trip last month we stopped at the National Brewery Museum in Potosi, WI and picked up some Potosi Brewing Company beers. Good Old Potosi Golden Ale was a standout. 2 six-packs that didn't make it home.

I went to Vermont and only came back with 29 beers, which i feel like is amazing restraint, I did bring back some yummy cider too.

writing a post on that right now!

my take is that the beer nerd doesn't care what you bring, probably has his own super secret IPA stash anyway. So in that sense, your standard craft sampler pack is usually a good bet for the rest of the guests.

For Thanksgiving though, I like something heavier and maltier early. I nice malty brown ale, an English Barleywine.. But once the meals starts approaching you don't want heavy with heavy, so my thoughts lean towards west coast IPA with all the crisp piney bitterness, a nice light sour (a table/belgian type sour, low ABV, not one of the THIS TASTES LIKE SOUR FRUIT LOOPS AND IS 11%, those are amazing but, well, 11%. Or Cider. hard cider goes real well imo, same thoughts, crisp/tart ones, cuts into the maple glazes and the heavy marshmallow'd sweet potatoes and all that.

Don't know much about beer, but the very hoppy beers from Aldi's would cut through the richness of the turkey and be a good choice.
