Corn on the Cob Controversy

This isn't poll worthy, but how does the CPF eat corn on the cob? East to west length-wise,

round the cob mouth-width north to south or cut the kernels off?

I was mocking my nephbro's technique last night but don't want to prejudice the vote.

East to West.

The I rotate it 90 degrees (around the length axis) and do it all over again.

Like the old typewriter carriage.

Re: Corn on the Cob Controversy

A corn farmer taught me the best way to grill it. Toss the ears into a bucket of water for several hours then throw them on the grill husk and all. It's super juicy!

I don't think I have a set way to eat it.

East-west, rotating as I go.

More importantly, who uses the little plastic tongs to hold your corn cob?

I like those. Especially when my corn on the cob is buttered. I'm also a typewriter.

Have never paid attention directionwise but tomorrow fresh ears are the menu plan. I wonder what my preference is. The little plastic tongs are de rigueur because I use too much butter.

I use the wet-ears-on-the-grill method, tho we also wrap in foil also I know its probably not necessary.

Re: Corn on the Cob Controversy

Never tried the soaked in water thing, sounds logical for juiciness purposes. I prefer

my corn boiled but if I'm grilling it for a group I always just place the husked corn right

on the grill and lightly singe it.

Re: Corn on the Cob Controversy

I usually peel 'em, soak 'em in butter/salt/cayenne, wrap 'em back up in the husk, and in foil and throw 'em on the grill. If you're careful you can then use the husk as a holder to limit the amount of butter mess. But sounds like I should make a point to butter, season and wrap them even earlier, so they have time to brine in the butter longer.

Re: Corn on the Cob Controversy

My uncle (he's dead at the present ) used to eat corn on the cob like a banana. He'd cook the corn with the husk in the oven on a baking sheet. When the corn was ready, he'd hold the corn so that the length or "long" of the corn was north to south. Then he'd pull down on the sides of the husks so that the corn looked like a peeled banana with the peels hanging by the sides. Then he'd eat the corn.

Had some ears tonight and learned I'm in the "typewriter" method group. Started at the left end, rotating a while, working toward the middle. Switched to the right end and rotated a while, working toward the middle. And then it was done. With Whippoorwill re munch munch munch etc.

Re: Corn on the Cob Controversy

I like corn, but it'll never be quite the same for me when in 1997 as a J1 student I'd almost run out of money before getting a few $ and we were staying in Sunnyside and at the market on Queens boulevard i bought 10 ears of corn for a $1 - we were all absolutely broke as we were all only just starting to work and had laid out the money for the apartment (and partied nonstop before). They lasted me for 2 days - with olive oil and pepper . On day 3 I went back and it was now 10 ears for 90c as they were getting a bit rough and ready - so I got to go again. Thankfully by day 4 I was monied again and only finished them for pleasure not sustenance.

Re: Corn on the Cob Controversy

Wifey Bucket butters her ears by spinning them on the butter stick itself. It's effective but questionable table manners, and it sorta ruins the shape of the butter stick

Haven't seen that since I was a kid. Ol' skool butterin'. I suppose this

time of year keeping a second butter dish for corn spinning might not

be a bad idea.

I don't remember that, will have to dig around in the archives.

Re: Corn on the Cob Controversy

I had corn at a street fair once where it was taken off the grill, given a coating of mayo -- I think -- then rolled in grated cheese and seasoning. It was a little much, a lot messy and did not sit well inside, if you know what I mean. The lessons I took from this were:

-- Street fair food is not always good to eat.

-- Some foods, like corn on the cob, are perhaps best left prepared simply. A little butter and a little salt and no more.

I've had this or something similar a few times, it's a bit much for my taste. I like

all the ingredients, just not on my corn...

Eating it myself? Typewriter, with rotation.

Preparing for others? My favorite before-peak-season summer preparation is taking grilled corn, shaving it off the cobb, and doing an elote-style corn-and-queso-fresco salad with a lime-ish dressing.

If you've got good, peak, in-season corn, and you do things to it ASIDE from just heating and eating, and MAYBE a little salt... well, I don't know what to do with you, you hat-on-a-hat motherfathers. If you're eating a thing, you want to taste the THING, don't you?
