Tylor Megill (1-0, 2.04 ERA) versus the ever prescient TBD toeing the rubber for Miami. Anyone besides me still think of them as the "Florida Marlins" when the team name is not presented in full?

The Marlins are depressing. Bad team. An owner determined to turn what was a colorful ballpark into something blander than his playing days interview quotes and is shocked that Mystique and Aura didn't follow him to South Florida.

Jeez, this may be the only thing I'd agree with you on in like more years than I can remember. That and the unfortunate mothballing of those great Marlins' art deco uniforms from the 2012 rebrand. Boy did he make shit out of that stadium. And those ads on the outfield walls. I don't like wall ads in general, but Marlins Park was aesthetically designed to specifically not have outfield wall ads. Those ads wrecked the whole concept of that park. Well, the color's scheme all shot to hell anyways, now. Loria's a scumbag, but he's no philistine. He has a flair for the visual.

They'd be a distant second in any other division and clinging to a chance to compete for a second wild card. They've played mediocre baseball for three of the first four months and are two months removed from their last hot streak.



Mainly the Mets are depressing because there are health concerns around deGrom. And until he is healthy and throwing it just stresses me out.



They botched the Rocker situation badly. I don't know if he's really damaged goods or if this was over money. But there was a reason every other team passed on him and I don't understand how you pull the trigger on that pick without being informed.



Their approach at the plate depresses me and I hate that they brought in another guy who does the same thing. Six years ago medicals saved Sandy from Wheeler-Gomez. I feel like this time we were not so lucky.



Conforto McNeil and Smith depress me. Who wild have guessed they'd all be so bad. It makes you wonder about a flaw in the organization's approach.



But that being said, Tylor Megill makes me happy. Kinda running away with DHM of the year right now.

Wait, McNeil is bad? Please don't let him know. The Marlins have traded their entire starting outfield, for the second time in three years, while the Nationals have defensestrated even more 2021 parts, so the Mets have an opportunity to fatten up here, playing 12 games against those two teams in August, and another 13 in September. May it not be an opportunity wasted.

I disagree.



I think they have overcome adversity and that puts them ahead of other teams that also are facing adversity. We're better than they are. If we were in the NL West I'd be bummed. But that division's not our problem! Good things happen in October when you win the division.



Playing mediocre baseball with so many people injured IS an accomplishment. That they've been able to hold off the Braves and Phillies is a credit to the team.



Did they botch the Rocker situation, or did they avert disaster. Of course it wasn't about the money. They saw something in the medicals they didn't like. Did the other teams above them see something the Mets didn't see? Possibly. Who knows. Baseball draft picks are all over the place.



Conforto and Smith are struggling, probably for a lot of reasons. We've been doing OK with them as they are now. If they right the ship or close to it, and we're still in first place? That's awesome!!



Tlyor is wonderful!



Feel free to wallow. My team is in first place in August. it's been an exciting season. I'm celebrating.

My nearly-30-year-old son (the erstwhile poster Lenny Harris) was walking down the street the other day with his Mets hat on and some random guy looked at him and said "Mets suck" for no apparent reason. Guy was clearly a MFY fan. My son stopped and said something to the effect of "actually, they don't suck. They're in first place. You could have said that many other years and been correct. It's the third-place Yankees who kind of suck this year." Makes a father proud.

still need more pitching. I know many expected a bit of an August slog after the shortened season last year, perhaps Walker, Stroman, etc are hitting a little bit of a wall. Hopefully they can get that straightened out, and deGrom can come back 'healthy'. Maybe Carrasco getting a late start will end up mean he's cruising in October, but post-trade deadline you'd like to have a little more certainty on what the rotation is. A month or so ago we were riding high that as long as disaster didn't strike, you had deGrom, Stroman, Walker all just cruising with guys like Megill as a great wildcard and the possibility of Carrasco and Thor returning and being backups or long relievers or whatever you needed in the playoffs. Now we're not even sure who'd start in the NLDS.

They're in Philly for the weekend. I'm actually going to CBP Friday night with Phillie fans- my first live baseball of 2021. I'm dreading it. This is a discombobulated team that has depended on the rest of the division playing even worse. They didn't get a real starter at the deadline and did nothing to upgrade the bullpen. That bill will come due shortly.

And this was kinda my point at the beginning of this thread. "We are in first place" is a smokescreen for a very flawed team. They are 29th in runs scored on August 3. They have a negative run differential. This is no longer a small sample size. Their approach at the plate has yielded terrible results. But they remain steadfastly committed to it rather than adjusting. Conforto, Smith, Lindor, McNeil and McCann are badly underperforming compared to expectations coming in. They are in first place by less than three games due to a hot streak in May where the subs performed well and the pitching was flawless. That team is no longer relevant for the last 59 games. Last night our starting pitcher gave up a first inning grand slam. Our offense wasn't able to put 4 on the board the rest of the way. So even if the pitching had been perfect, it wouldn't have mattered. This team has been moving backwards for a while. I'm not saying folks shouldn't be optimistic. There's plenty of time and plenty of opportunity to turn it around. But to improve, a team has to show a willingness to improve. I haven't seen any trace of that.

I get pessimistic when I don't see a catalyst. Baez by himself isn't doing it for me, just another low-OBP guy at the front of the lineup. I'm not even sure if this is doable or ultimately wise but what if Luis started doling out Trachsel Cures. Schedule 'em: Conforto, report to Syracuse immediately, see you in one week. When he comes back, Smith goes down When Smith comes back, McCann goes down If Smith and McCann don;t wanna go down then start producing more NOW. Then after 3 weeks, hopefully while we stay above water, Zimmo and Lindor are healthy and the healthy but struggling guys have been humbled and forgiven. Step on the gas Aug. 25.

They are very much a different team without Nimmo in the lineup. This is all the more exacerbated by the black hole that Pillar fell into.

They need someone to carry this team on his back, like Cespedes did in 2015. Alonso is giving it his best shot, but it's not resulting in as many wins as we need it to.

Don't underestimate the lack of energy on the field since Lindor came up lame. He was pushing his teammates along the entire time he was out there.

I agree. His numbers weren't what we wanted them to be, but he definitely had an impact. He's been missed.
