Maybe there's an argument to be made that Diaz, fresh, against those specific players is more effective than a second inning of Lugo. Maybe there is some data to back that up, maybe there are fatigue/injury issues we're unaware of, but the up-down thing clearly seems to be Rojas' go-to lie about bullpen moves, so we'll never know.

Perhaps Nido has some previously undisplayed bunting acumen that only Luis knows.

If not, and Luis was so afraid that Nido would hit into a DP that he told him to bunt (akin to Stroman being told not to swing right before Nimmo hit into a DP) then (if you want to keep him on the team because he's been good at throwing out runners) you need to carry a 3d C somehow (they had 2 guys in the BP last night that you never heard of) so they can PH for him. (That was a long sentence.)

Having him bunt was conceding an out AND being afraid of giving them 2 outs and that's not a solid strategy for a contender. Given that he was unable to bunt it was the same as what they told Stroman.
