Does he have options? Maybe he'll go to Syracuse and provide some rotation depth. The Mets may just be figuring that he's better than Jerad Eickoff.

Baez plays a lot of positions well, which means we will have options when Lindor comes back.

I worry that he's become too one dimensional as a hitter and our park won't reward that.

His career year came under Chili Davis's watch.

Given the scarcity of good center fielders, I'd have given up somebody other than Armstrong.

McNeil is under control for three more seasons and has four game-winning hits this past month. His career OPS+ beats Baez by 30 points. The goal is to win, right?

Hs OBP's have always been fucking dreadful, not just the last two seasons, but even in his very best years. His best ever single season OBP was .326. His lifetime OBP is .303.

I share all your fears about his OBP and if he is what we needed. If I am trading a top prospect, it would have been for a SP. But maybe there is more to this McNeil injury than they are telling us. Deal makes a lot more sense if that is the case.

I see Baez as a higher quality version of Villar. If McNeil is healthy, I'd keep writing in Guillorme most days for the OBP and defense, and start platooning Dom and JD. That combo in LF should be more productive without hurting D, the infield gets both an offensive and defensive upgrade, and Villar improves the bench.

Official release. No latent additions from either side.

METS ACQUIRE ALL-STAR INFIELDER JAVIER BÁEZ AND RHP TREVOR WILLIAMS FROM CHICAGO

FLUSHING, N.Y., July 30, 2021 – The New York Mets today announced the club has acquired two-time All-Star infielder Javier Báez, RHP Trevor Williams and cash considerations from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for minor league outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong.

Báez, 28, has spent his entire eight-year major league career with the Cubs. This season with Chicago-NL, he is tied for sixth in the National League with 65 RBI and tied for seventh with 22 home runs. He has a 2.8 WAR according to Baseball-Reference.

Since 2016, his first full major league season, he has accumulated 9.6 defensive WAR, tied for fourth in the majors and tied for second in the NL. Báez is a four-time winner of The Fielding Bible Award for defensive excellence. He won the award three times as a multi-position player and was honored as a shortstop last year.

The 6-0, 190-pounder was named an NL All-Star in 2018 and 2019, won a Gold Glove in 2020 and was an NL Silver Slugger recipient in 2018, when he finished as the runner-up for the NL MVP Award. The Bayamon, Puerto Rico native won the 2016 World Series with Chicago-NL. That October, he was named the NLCS Co-MVP with LHP Jon Lester.

Báez became the first player in major league history to start the All-Star Game at second base and shortstop in consecutive seasons.

Williams, 29, has made 13 appearances (12 starts) for the Cubs this season, going 4-2 with a 5.06 ERA (33 earned runs/58.2 innings) with 22 walks and 61 strikeouts.

He has appeared in 119 games (106 starts) across six major league seasons between the Pirates (2016-2020) and Cubs (2021). Overall, he is 35-39 with a 4.49 ERA (296 earned runs/593.1 innings) with 199 walks and 477 strikeouts. He was originally selected by the Marlins in the second round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft out of Arizona State University.

Williams has made two starts at Citi Field and owns a 1.93 ERA (three earned runs/14.0 innings) with four walks and 10 strikeouts.

Crow-Armstrong, 19, was the Mets first-round pick in the 2020 First-Year Player Draft out of Harvard-Westlake High School in California. He appeared in six games with the St. Lucie Mets before he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury. He underwent surgery on his right shoulder for a GLAD lesion (glenoid labral articular disruption) in May.

Baez's glove and versatility (combined, most likely, with McNeil's versatility) makes this a good upgrade, with two caveats:

1. Baez will not find Citi as friendly to his approach as Wrigley Field was. Keep your offensive expectations conservative.

2. If they could have given up less than Crow-Armstrong to get just Baez, adding Trevor Williams was a very bad move.

I'm not seeing him as anything more than a fill-in for Lindor in case the oblique keeps him out for 6-8 weeks, which isn't unheard of, and then a defensive upgrade at 2B once Lindor returns. Longer term, an infield of Pete or Dom-Baez-Lindor-McNeil doesn't excite me any more than Pete/Dom - McNeil - Lindor - JD.

I don't like trading high ceiling prospects, but for all the talk of the team needing a "real" CF, Nimmo's been plenty real lately. Not sure there was going to be a spot opening for PCA unless Conforto were to walk, and I'd rather see the Mets buy low on Conforto during the off-season. So I don't hate the trade, but it's a rental.

The thing this signals to me most, worrisome or not, is a commitment to making Lindor as comfortable as possible, so we get the Lindor we know exists for the next 9+ years. Is that worth Pete Crow-Armstrong? If it works, then most likely yes.

What stands out most to me is the 65 RBI this year and the league-leading 111 his last full season. (You can count the All-Star appearances and Gold Gloves, too) But this team leaves too many runners on base and I can overlook his other deficiencies if he can continue to drive in runs. The game boils down to scoring runs and keeping the other team from scoring runs, and he does both.

Is he a very good, in-his-prime player in a way that Jeff McNeil distinctly ain't? Because I'm having trouble making this add up with the decreased playing time for Jeff, who is the team's most reliable hitter right now, and has a lifetime .312 batting average and .860 OPS. The glove can speak for itself, but those are numbers that Javy Baez has rarely ever sniffed, much less sustained over a career.

Ideally, the playing time he gains gets taken from multiple people. But I'd seriously have guessed that a new shortstop was one of the last things the team needed.

Well, you'll see Javy at short for at least a few weeks because it doesn't look like Lindor's coming back anytime soon. I'd expect the playing time losers are Guillorme and Villar. Villar has looked a little logy since he came back from his last injury.

Isn't the ultimate 'plan' to have Lindor at SS, Baez at 2B and McNeil at 3B? I'm

Same here. But I'm willing to give this management every benefit of the doubt. Plus, who knows how much limbo the 2021 Mets offfense is still in with Lindor IL'd and McNeil perhaps not fully healed. I don't. So maybe Baez truly is a rental. Baez is an asset. Overall, he'll help you win. He just has a strange skill set. He's a spectacular gold-glove caliber defender who can absolutely crush -pulverize the baseball - but who strikes out a heck of a lot and swings at everything - rarely walking.

I still think Javy is kind of a therapy blanket for Lindor, but he's still an elite defender and right-handed power bat, and the team got way deeper offensively and defensively before a maybe playoff run. McNeil will still get reps at second and may platoon at third some when JD comes back, but he hasn't done much damage against lefties this year so I can't blame the Mets much for making this move.

Report: Mets Discussed Blockbuster Trade With Cubs At Deadline

Sports Illustrated wrote:
According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Mets were talking to the Cubs about a potential blockbuster deal that would have sent 2020 first-round pick Pete Crow-Armstrong, an even higher regarded prospect and a major league player under multi-year control to Chicago in exchange for Kris Bryant, Javier Báez, Trevor Williams and another major league player.

However, the Mets received the news that their ace, Jacob deGrom, was going to be shutdown with right elbow inflammation just hours before the deadline, which would put him out until September at best-case scenario.

Due to the uncertainty surrounding deGrom's status, the Mets decided to make a smaller trade that would slice the initial package in half in the form of Báez and Williams coming to Queens in exchange for Crow-Armstrong, per Rosenthal. This was decided in the final hour prior to the 4 p.m. deadline on July 30.

I'm not sure I see the argument for the half measure. If they figured that losing deGrom meant that they were less likely to make the playoffs with Baez and Bryant, why trade Crow-Armstrong for a package that doesn't include Bryant? Getting less of a boost and still giving up a top prospect?

Re: Welcome to New York, Javy Baez!

Well, if they were down on crow armstrong already it makes a little more sense. We don't know who the players in the bryant deal were. Was it mauricio? Vientos? The cubs traded Rizzo away - what if the deal was Baez and Bryant rentals for Dom Smith? I think I would have done that for a team 5 games up with a healthy degrom. Not with the team you have.

The Mets traded one of their few good prospects for Baez, and two months of him, at the urging of Lindor, who they signed for 10 years and a zillion dollars, and both of them told the fans to "fuck off" today.

I'm not sure what Lindor's involvement was, but they gave up more than the Yankees did for Rizzo and the Giants did for Bryant for what they are now saying was a half-measure (and got somebody that people will now be happy to see go in two months). And they got no relievers, and Rich Hill was the best they could do for the rotation.

Sandy's statement.

In a post-game press conference today, Javy Baez stated that his “thumbs down” gesture during the game was a message to fans who recently have booed him and other players for poor performance. These comments, and any gestures by him or other players with a similar intent, are totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

Mets fans are understandably frustrated over the team's recent performance. The players and the organization are equally frustrated, but fans at Citi Field have every right to express their own disappointment. Booing is every fan's right.

The Mets will not tolerate any player gesture that is unprofessional in its meaning or is directed in a negative way toward our fans. I will be meeting with our players and staff to convey this message directly.

Mets fans are loyal, passionate, knowledgeable and more than willing to express themselves. We love them for every one of these qualities.

It would seem to be a kind of not so funny joke with a kernel of truth to it. I'll bet the players are unhappy. I also understand they didn't hire Baez for his brains. He's getting dfaed over this unless he doubles down

Sandy's message seems appropriate inasmuch as he recognized what red meat this would be for a press that hasn't had the kind of access to get anything so juicy in years and a narrative to explain the club's dysfunction.

Getting harder and harder to imagine Luis survives. The team might also do well to acquire a veteran or two who "know how to play the game the right way." Look I've supported the team for 50 years. I boo sometimes. I booed the other night when we went down feebly to a parade shitty giants pitchers & a guy didn't cover first base. It's reactive and it expresses my displeasure at the effort-- very different than the numbnuts who *greet* a player with boos. Those fans suck. I am a very good Mets fan.

Re: Welcome to New York, Javy Baez!

it's entertainment, boo if you're not entertained. Although booing specific players always seems a little crass. Boo a GIDP down 3 runs in the 5th. But booing like Dom Smith when he walks up to the plate is silly, though I guess if you want to boo when he makes out AGAIN, that's you're right. Of course sometimes players misunderstand. You might boo Kevin Pillar in the starting lineup because Michael Conforto SHOULD be there. You're really booing Luis Rojas. I remember a story from Philly that Billy Wagner got upset that fans were booing a ball or something, and it just turned out they were booing that he only hit 99 and not 100. Booing the speed gun.

I imagine Báez thought he was trying to be cute or playful or something, like "thumbs down to booing!" but he certainly didn't phrase or say it like that. The other guys were just doing the same thing every team does, signaling when you get on base. Javy's like "hey, let's do this!" and they just played along. teammates, etc.

I'm kind of "eh" about this.

They're playing poorly and looking for a way to stay motivated, so they're using the negative vibes as fuel. That's fine. It's poorly thought out to turn that into a public campaign, but players can be stupid.

The whole churve thing was weird in that it was hitters referencing the grip of a pitcher. He was, in fact, their number five starter and they were making the reference long after he was hurt and unlikely to ever pitch for the Mets again. It also looked like a white power sign.

Players can be stupid.

It's not like I need a reason to dislike the Baez deal, but his contract is up at the end of the season, which is more than I can say for Robinson Canó. A good leader — whether that's Alderson or Scott or Rojas or Lindor — can make something out of this moment, and a bad leader not so much. We'll see.

I'll also add that I'm not sure I understand the advocacy for dumping Pillar.

The outrage here is hilarious to me. If you want to boo (I don't get it personally, but ok), then boo. But if players have an innocuous response to it, who gives a shit if you approve of it or not. Javy Baez quoted in Tbe Athletic:
[Quote] ... with a two-run homer, delivered a two-thumbs down salute in celebration, then revealed that the gesture, which has caught on with teammates, was an overt message to Mets fans who have chosen to boo the team's recent performance.

“To let them know,” Báez said, “that when we don't get success, we're gonna get booed, so they're gonna get booed when we get success.”

There was more. When first asked about the gesture, Báez explained that it stemmed from “the boos that we get.” When asked to expand, he clarified that the boos do not actually bother him; they just irked him enough that he felt motivated to boo back.

“You know, we're not machines, we're gonna struggle,” he said. “We're gonna struggle seven times out of 10, and it just feels bad when I strike out and I get booed. It doesn't really get to me, but I want to let them know: When we have success, we're gonna do the same thing, to let them know how it feels. Because if we win together, we're gonna lose together. And the fans are a really big part of it.”

I wouldn't even give Baez that much credit. I think it's nothing more than nonsense, but Baez doesn't know that and truly believes he's making an intelligent remark. “I didn't mean to offend anybody,” [Baez] said outside of the Mets dugout. “This is something that I've done in the past against the other team. I did it in LA to the dugout. I might [have said] something wrong about how I was booing the fans, and I really meant to [say] like, ‘Boo me now' -- and not to the fans -- to our dugout because I've done it with the other team and against other teams.

"I've never seen the same fans and I didn't say the fans are bad. I love the fans. But I just felt like we were alone. The fans obviously want us to win, and they pay our salary, like everybody says. But we want to win, too. The frustration got to us, and I didn't mean to offend anybody, and if I did offend anybody, we apologize.”

Baez added he's “not surprised” about the social media whirlwind that has been created around the team now. He says he understands the frustration fans might have toward the initial comments, and added “other comments for my comment has been crazy.”

But the Mets still have an entire month to play. And though they've created a giant hole to dig themselves out of if they wish to even sniff the postseason, Baez says the team is trying to be unified through the off-the-field issue that he created.

I got caught up in the heat of the moment, but I want to make it clear now that Mets fans are the dregs of the MLB, they deserve nothing, and I hope every single one of them dies a horrible, painful death.” At press time, Báez had tweeted a message of unity that both players and fans should be united in directing their ire towards the cowardly, short-sighted Mets management.

Re: Welcome to New York, Javy Baez!

well, my main point was that THE MEDIA SHOULD BE ASKING ABOUT VACCINATION STATUS, every day. constantly. Them not being at 85% is directly related to not being able to invite the press in closer.

I'm not sure how that changes this particular story. The media would've asked the same questions in person as they did on Zoom, though maybe the kid isn't there. (And like, I'm pro players being able to hold their kid after the game and maybe talk to the media in a designated spot) Báez would've said the same thing.

Why would you care what the media asks anyone when your standing position is that they just make up what they report anyway?

Re: Welcome to New York, Javy Baez!

they don't make up what they report, they make up the narrative and then report the quotes that fit said narrative.

Like, they think the Mets should sign X free agent, so they poke around until they find someone to confirm that that's a good idea, and then report "someone close to the Mets thinks X free agent is a good fit" and then gets a bunch of clicks. It's leading reporting, it's garbage.
