There are participating bikeshop sponsors who set up in the designated start/end/rest towns. I am traveling with 1 patched tube as a spare but my tires are pretty hard to puncture generally

I brought two spares with me,, just wasn't expecting to blow that many while exploring the starting town the night before the ride even began (I ran over some RR tracks). But we were within blocks of a bike shop selling spares on the street (see JCL's post) so I bought two new ones and now still have my original two plus two blown ones should I get around to patching them.





In the meantime, greetings to all from Fort Douglas, IA

Two days and 160 or so miles in (5 & ~ 300 to go).

Day 1 was tough, Day 2 much easier (done by 11 AM)

It's hot here and it's going to get hotter so Wednesday & Thursday in particular might get a bit hairy.

Yeah, I can go hundreds of miles without needing to engage a spare tube, so instinct tells me that I shouldn't have to pack more than one. And then reality hits and I realize (again) that what happens to one tire is frequently something that is about to hit the second tire as well. Ride well, gentlemen.

So after five days of benign and/or helping breezes, we were visited by the godess of headwinds today. Nothing too brutal, but the difference between 4-5 mph at your back and 7-8 in your face for the better part of 65 miles can be substantial, even if the temp did drop 15 degrees since yesterday. One short day to go. More pics to follow.

There are shower trailers in our camp, 4 or 5 of em with 6 shower stalls each. For people on their own the host towns offer a range of options (school gyms, car washes etc)

Given the conditions of some of these days, particularly earlier in the week -- distances in the 80s, temps in the 90s -- we wouldn't merely reek without showers, we'd probably spontaneously combust. btw, as of about 9 AM CDT this morning, we had both our toes and our tires in the mighty Mrs. Sipp, meaning that we are DONE!!

That is absolutely NOT a picture of me drinking beer at 8 o'clock in the morning, officer ... I swear it. OK, it actually is me but it's mostly a 'Weekend at Bernie's' situation where I'm propped up there while my arms are controlled by strings. And controlling the pedals on the bike in order to propel me across the state required even more of complex operation but we managed to pull it off.

Today I rode out to Stony Brook to watch the Hens play the Seawolves. I basically sat on the bike and the wind got me there.. 54 miles in about 3.5 hours. Bad Guys Won. Hens downed their opening drive punt on the 1, 1st play, SB tailback went 99 yards. Nobody goes to Stony Brook games, too busy doing remedial homework,

I have a GPS in my brain. I just googled 'distance between Mytown and Battery Park' and it's 51.9 miles. Pretty spot on. Do you need a bike permit to bring one on the LIRR? I used to need one on Metro North years ago but I think that rule has been rescinded.
