Please Introduce Yourself By Kicking My Ass

Connie's death and "we're an american band" video (the cool studio footage version posted below) reminded me that we've never had a thread devoted entirely to "Best Klassik Rawk Song Ever If We Only Consider The First ~40 Seconds"

Post your favorites, but here's a couple to get started. Argue for them! Argue against them.

(some would argue Spirit of Radio is an even better opening but I like the relative compactness of this one and then the odd-time signatures a little better)

This song, on this list, makes even less sense to me than the idea that the Mets should retire Gary Carter's number. I can't even understand why #8 isn't even in circulation. How come there's no outcry to retire R.A. Dickey's #43? What? Because Carter had better teammates and played on better teams?

Limelight? Really? With millions of other songs to choose from?

Re: Please Introduce Yourself By Kicking My Ass

There's a band out there called "Those Darn Accordions" that did a parody of "We're an American Band". So now, every time I hear even the intro, I start thinking:

We're an accordion band

We're an accordion band

We're comin' to your town

We'll help you polka down

We're an accordion band

It's a brilliant parody, but it doesn't do much for my opinion of the intro's awesomeness.

Without thinking about it too much, "Locomotive Breath" comes to mind as a song with an ass-kicking intro.

You're supposed to choose a few of those millions.

But... cmon, man. The fanfare. Then the same fanfare but the 6th note is held an extra second that second time thru. Then the same fanfare a third time but the drums come on the 6th note, then the fanfare but whole band kicks in (yes on that 6th note), and gallops into alternating 3/4 / 4/4 time signatures, then the vocals echo the fanfare, rhyming on that same spot -- "ap-PROACH-ES" ... "THOSE WHO"... it's a complex ass-kicking factory

Limelight is one of my lesser favorite Rush 'hits.' This one has a solid opening imo...

I like how the cowbell is used both in that falling down the stairs intro and then again in the regular beat.after the big-ass guitar fanfare. The that opening vocal-- on the road for 40 days!..-- what a start

And speaking of KISS:

I prefer the studio version with the keyboards to the Budokan version, but they both kick the doors down. It's funny, because the studio version of "I Want You to Want Me" with the keyboards is far worse and preferred by nobody.

That chord opening sounds too stiff ---herky, jerky. Not to mention that mainly, it's not so musically pleasing on a purely visceral or auditory basis.

it's a good thing that you cut these songs off at the 40 second mark because when that Geddy Lee kicks in with his castrati-like vocals, I wanna cringe. I don't care what he's singing about or what his band's playing --- when he opens his trap, I'm out the door. "Like a munchkin delivering a sermon".

Welcome aboard, Apodax.

I think the we have an interesting pair of categories between the songz that open with a chord riff and those that open with a single-note riff.

Team "Satisfaction" vs. Team "Start Me Up," as it were.

Re: Please Introduce Yourself By Kicking My Ass

Yeah I think the cool thing about good openings is that they don't all follow the same rules. Like a hard day's night is an awesome opening, and that lasts only a few seconds, like my lovemaking style

Not sure what you consider classic rock. I like Motown and always loved the intro to "Tears of a Clown." You know what that song is after the first three notes, and it only gets better.

Both "Limelight" and "Spirit of Radio" are amazing.

And while we're on Sly and the Family Stone, The Eagles ripped off and lamed out this intro to use on "Witchy Woman."

Really, Sly Stone and Stevie Wonder should be first class/first ballot inductees into the Intro Hall of Fame.

It is absolutely true that this opening has never failed to stop kicking ass, but the stunning truth is that they nicked the whole bit, and it's actually been kicking ass since Pee Wee Crayton laid it down in 1954.

It's almost stunning that that much distortion was even legal in 1954.
