Rich Hill 6-6 3.92

Sandy Alcantara 8-13 3.36

Win this one, and five years from now I might even remember that Rich Hill was a Met.

Hill was more than decent last time around, but he also has socks older than Alcantara and this is one where the pitching matchup is decidedly against us.

At least on paper it is although, last time I checked anyway, they'll not be playing tonight's game on paper.

That shows a baseball I.Q. lower than the probability of making it.

I wonder if he was sent, or he did it on his own.

Paid attendance announced yesterday was like 5800 fans. Which would be a healthy sized crowd for a Syracuse games (we usually draw about 1/3 of that).

This was a 6:40 start so it's more like 2:30 to this point, but your point still works.

The Yanx/Jays, meanwhile, are 2 hours+ into their game and are in the top of the 5th. NYY starter Luis Gil took 91 pitches just to get thru 3.1 innings, walking 7 in the process.

3-0 Jays bottom 5

This got to me too. He has almost no chance to catch that ball, but no excuse for quitting on it.

Re: IGT 09/08 NYM@MIA Twice is a Blue Moon

I don't think he quit so much as reverted to instinct.

Realizing he wasn't going to catch up to it he set himself up for the best rebound only to belatedly remember that a quick relay in wasn't going to do him any good.

We watched Almora play a lot of stellar CF up here in the 'Cuse this summer. I think if he had a chance on that ball he would have been in position.

Frayed Knot

Re: IGT 09/08 NYM@MIA Twice is a Blue Moon

My point was that he seemed to pull up at the end and played it off the wall as if by instinct and then, after getting the carom, immediately realized that of course he had no play.

I don't think he could have caught that ball no matter what he did, but he had this kind of 'Oh shit' body language as he turned as he realized that his instincts didn't serve him

well there.

Edgy MD
Sep 09 2021 01:23 PM
Re: IGT 09/08 NYM@MIA Twice is a Blue Moon

Of course, the real "Oh shit" belongs to the manager who let his pitcher pitch to him, and the pitcher who left that pitch over the plate.

It didn't hit off the top of the wall, but the middle. He seemingly had a chance if stayed full bore on the ball, but even had he made the unlikely grab, he would have had to survive a heckuva collision, so there's only so much lamenting I can do.

Jump ahead to 1:20 to see the hit.

Ya kinda want to see a full-body extension leap there, don't ya? Unless you're thinking, "Well, the season is shot anyway, I could get hurt, it's entirely possible I wouldn't catch it anyway, and they ain't paying me enough for this shit."

You know, sorta like us here.

Can't blame him, but staying on his feet is a big sign reading "2021 Season is OVER, people. Stop kidding yourself." Yes, I know how to read.
