IGT 9/13/2021, STL @ NYM: Whistle A Happy Tune

The Cardinals are in Flushing for a 7:10 start. Adam Wainwright (sigh) (40) against Rich Hill (41), sponsored by Miracle Ear, Roman, and AARP. https://www.mlb.com/gameday/cardinals-vs-mets/2021/09/13/632478#game_state=preview,lock_state=preview,game_tab=,game=632478 STL is one out of the 2d WC spot and the Mets are 3 out. With the Mets 5 back of ATL and PHI in 2d place, the 2d WC might be the Mets best hope of making the playoffs but they will need to play well against STL and PHI this week as those are two of the teams ahead of them for the 2d WC. The Mets split a 4 game series with STL in early May. STL is managed by Whitey Herzog, I mean Mike Shildt. Their 1B Coach is named Stubby Clapp. Expect the typical Cardinal hagiography as GKR talk about Lou Brock, Willie McGee, Yadier Molina, Wainwright, et al., ad nauseum. (A personal note: I stopped resenting all of the love for Molina two springs ago when I went to a game in Port St. Lucie and he started for STL. I remember reading that Jeter wasn't issued a road ST uniform one year because there was no way he would travel in the spring and yet here was Molina, sweating under the Florida sun in a practice game so he could learn the new pitchers. I hope Wainwright and Molina are consigned to a special hell after they die, where they have to repeatedly throw the curveball to Beltran and he jacks it out of the fucking universe every time.

Well, I hold a grudge and the thought of Molina sweating his ass off in a meaningless spring training game makes me happy. F him, Wainwright, and the horses they rode in on.

Absolutely. Believe me, sitting among those yokels, the alleged "Best Fans In Baseball" which means that they don't boo or criticize but they endlessly cheer for their team, was very annoying.

btw, there was a Cardinals board i used to peek in on from time to time which was viscious, and I mean towards their own guys. There was a whole "Faction" [their name for it] within the board who despised LaRussa and blamed everything that went wrong on him, including probably the weather. I also remember Isringhausen blowing a save (something he apparently did too often for their liking) and being told to "Die on Christmas!" BFiB my ass! And if they want to cheer Pujols for a recent AB at Busch III and then cheer him again after he HRs against them during a September game where they need every win, well then that's their fucking problem.

A big win against the MFYs will do that to you. I've noticed that the Mets release the lineup much later than other teams. If there's an injury and they are checking the player's status that's valid but it's the norm for this team.

Lindor comes to the plate, the fans give him lots of cheers, how did Lindor react? We don't know because SNY was showing us replays of a single.

Terry is pretty good. On a blocked pitch by Molina, remarks that umpires tend to like backstops that take the bad pitches off their bodies, saving the ump pain. Says that will earn the Cardinals called strikes.

Keith just cryptically said that Gary Carter told him he didn't like playing in Los Angeles, but he pointedly wouldn't say why. It's an open secret that all players hated Lasorda? He was getting diminishing playing time and didn't have any track record with the Dodgers to fall back on? He'd already had enough of Strawberry in New York? What truly made it cryptic was a knowing answer from Gary Cohen: "I bet I can guess why." Don't be like that, guys! It's totally rude!

Maybe so, but Junior Valentine may get a freebie after taking a throw off his face earlier in the game. On the other hand, maybe he should get automatically lifted from the game under concussion protocols.

Carter hated LA because as a thoroughly faded baseball player at the end of the line, there was no way for him to manipulate the media and the rube portion of the fanbase into treating Carter like an indispensable star and a key cog of the Dodgers.

Also thought right along with him when he explained that the Shea seats were indeed dull by the mid-70s. They were not only weather-beaten, as Gary noted, but also very much neglected. But those seats had a brilliant shine to them when they were new.

What a dud, what an awful game. They had momentum and the fans on their side after Sunday but were terrible in every facet of the game.
