IGT 9/22/2021: NYM@BOS — I Will Mention Bob Murphy

The ballclub at whose microphone Bob Murphy grew into a legend visits the ballclub at whose microphone Bob Murphy got started. Sometime after seven until sometime near eleven, on the Snigh. Taijuan Walker will look to throw the ball well for the Mets. Chris Sale will take a scissors and disconnected the yellow and blue of the Red Sox.

Our magic number, for what it's worth, is still 20.

Anything can happen, of course, but right now it's hard to see them sniffin'

.500 let alone making a magic number run of any sorts.

Re: IGT 9/22/2021: NYM@BOS — I Will Mention Bob Murphy

In the spirit of the thread's namesake…

Leading off for the visiting New York Mets is the swift center fielder, Brandon Nimmo. Brandon is always such a happy young man.

Batting second, at first base, is the man they call the Polar Bear, Pete Alonso. Pete delivered a laser of a home run to left field last night, way over the Green Monster, his 34th of the year. Pete has such impressive power.

Batting third is the shortstop, Francisco Lindor. Francisco has really turned it on in the second half.

The cleanup hitter, at second base, is Javy Baez. I have to tell you, there may not be a more all-around entertaining player in all of the big leagues.

J.D. Davis batting fifth as the designated hitter. You know manager Luis Rojas is delighted to have an extra bat in his lineup in the American League park, particularly one as potent as J.D.'s.

Playing third base and batting sixth is Jonathan Villar. Jonathan has been such a big surprise for the Mets this year, one of the best unheralded pickups made by Sandy Anderson's front office in the offseason.

Batting seventh and in left field tonight is Jeff McNeil. You have to love this young man's versatility.

Around in right is the number-eight hitter for manager Luis Rojas, the veteran Kevin Pillar, playing tonight in place of Michael Conforto. Luis is always looking for an edge, and against the tough lefthander Chris Sale, Kevin can really get it done.

And batting ninth is the catcher, James McCann. The pitchers just rave about James' game-calling skills.

Tonight, the native Californian — he has such a beautiful family — will put those abilities to good use catching starting pitcher Taijuan Walker. The big righthander represented the Mets in Denver this summer at the All-Star Game, though has had some trouble getting untracked in the second half, but has lately looked very sharp.

For the Boston Red Sox, managed by old friend Alex Cora…

Re: IGT 9/22/2021: NYM@BOS — I Will Mention Bob Murphy

Good job, you got "veteran" in there, but you missed two of his favorites:

"He has a world of speed", and

"He has a world of power". (And he seemed to be gurgling on his own phlegm when he said the world "world".)

Those were usually reserved for an opposition player, to set the fans up for a loss, because the Mets could never beat a team with players like that.

I think Tim McCarver was the first one I heard use the word "laser" for a home run. It was a Spring Training game, and the ball was hit by Butch Huskey. (That is my second Butch Huskey reference this week. I think I have to lie down.)

Nicely done! If you close your eyes you can almost hear him. Wait, then you can't

read it. Don't close your eyes, you can still almost hear him.

So we play the Sawx four times and face Sale while the Yanx get them 19 times and don't see him at all.

Gary is claiming that hanging Ks started at Shea -- presumably for Gooden -- but I remember them being done for Nolan Ryan

in his Anaheim days and was dubious about NYM fans copying the act.

I feel like all the dice roles were working out in favor of the Mets' shifting in the first half, and it's all catching up to them now.

Please IL Walker. He doesn't need to throw anymore, the games don't matter, he's under contract for next year, let him rest.

And Megill. He doesn't need to pitch on Friday. Yamamoto is pitching in SYR (he got shelled on Wednesday but so what?). Call him up and Oswalt, as well. Let Megill and Walker start recuperating for '22.

Re: IGT 9/22/2021: NYM@BOS — I Will Mention Bob Murphy

So in this game, the offense (from one side anyway) and the high number of pitches thrown have an obvious impact on the pace of the game. But, still, the opening three innings took 90 minutes, a pace for a 4-1/2 hour game.

And again, when 3:00 - 3:15 is your baseline for an average game, it doesn't take much to push things up towards four hours

Re: IGT 9/22/2021: NYM@BOS — I Will Mention Bob Murphy

It seems strange to hear the booth discussing whether Javy Baez is so good that the Mets can't not sign him as the team is getting locked in a box and buried, and that's happening over and over again almost every night.

They can lose every day with or without Javy.

I punched out. Fboy watches AEW wrestling on Wednesday nights and usually I just put the game on my Chromebook so I can watch baseball and hang out with him. But I turned it off. I'll stick to wrestling - at least the guys getting stomped in the AEW act like it hurts them.

He didn't bail quite as badly as Gary Sanchez did a few weeks back, but still ...

Or maybe by some pickup team from Sweden (who happen to have a bunch of inexplicably dark skinned guys on their team)

Even if there were definitive proof showing Villar to be safe, if I'm the ump crew back in Chelsea I'm rejecting any challenge just on general principles.
