Postcards from the Fam

Edgy MD
Sep 16 2021 01:10 PM

At last count, 726 players had appeared for the 2021 Mets, many starting the season in the employ of unfriendly alternative organization and many finding themselves among such company now.

The blanks below represent 2021 Mets, who are no longer Mets even as 2021 continues. They are identified only by their post-Mets organizational itineraries and the undated transactions that got them there.

Name those Mets.

If Johneshwy was the runningest Met on this list (and who doesn't like to have a baserunning specialist on the roster in September?), then McKinnney was the hittingest, and probably the most valuable 2021 Met on this list. Nice work.

    Re: Postcards from the Fam

Good one. Jacob currently flaps those ears for the Blue Jays, although he's put up a 6.00 ERA in nine innings, so he may not be a first choice for the postseason roster. Troy Miller hasn't done much more, starting one undistinguished game for Bingo, doing much better in his second game, before hitting the Injured List.

The name of highly speedy Puerto Rican Met who came in on a minor league free agency contract in 2020. Got into seven games this season in the midst of the Mets' outfield crisis and acquitted himself well. He would have gotten into more but he got himself hurt during that period also.

His biggest moment as a Met is pretty anonymous — hitting for the cycle in spring training facing mostly big league pitching against the Cardinals in Jupiter. One of the reasons it's barely remembered is that the Mets had no TV or radio broadcast of the game.

Mallex sadly never became a Met. After failing to make the team out of Spring Training, he invoked his right to become a free agent rather than accept a Syracusan assignment. When the Mets outfield health collapsed like a Jenga tower, this proved less than prescient.

Mayday, on the other hand, appeared for the Mets but never left the organization. After being DFA'd, he was sent through waivers, and despite his 15 years of experience, other organizations were a little creeped out by his .036 batting average (and .036 slugging percentage!) as a Met. He cleared waivers and joined Syracuse before getting hurt in July. He only just recently re-appeared on the rehab circuit with St. Lucie.

Number two is a sidearmer who pitched mopup in two lopsided losses — throwing an inspiring inning against Colorado at Coors, and then a disastrous one the next week against the Cubs.

The Giants put him through waivers also, and neither the Mets nor anybibby else grabbed him back.
