RIP Duke Carmel, 1937-2021

I always thought to myself that Carmel had one of the greatest names ever among Mets.

The Mets had a rotating door at first in 1963. They finally had seemed to have parked Frank Thomas there in mid-July before getting Duke two weeks later, installing him at first, and sending Thomas back to the outfield. Although he made little noise, he went down to Buffalo the next year and smashed 35 homers, which is 35 homers, no matter what league you're playing in. Doesn't currently have a SABR bio.

He was a lefty hitter, and IIRC the old Buffalo ballpark had a very close, high, left field fence (like the L.A. Coliseum) so Duke must have learned to hit to left, a la Wally Moon. He also walked 100 times that year, but OPS wasn't a thing back then, or he might have found his was back to the majors. RIP Later
